Day 32...SUGAR DRAGON!!

Hi all, I just did my first whole30! ( yay!) I must say it went very well and I had little to no cravings. I planned to continue on to a whole50 but tonight the sugar dragon wiped me right out. EAT ALL THE CARBS!!! That was how tonight went...it started with dates... Then it just went downhill. Anyone else's cravings hit later? I'm planning on dusting myself off tmrw and getting back on the train. I wanna do a whole20 before I go on holidays at the end of the month! I could use the encouragement! I feel so down on myself! : (

I'm only on day 22. But firstly you should be absolutely delighted with yourself that you have finished the whole 30!! So congrats. There is a point in the book about having a treat and thoroughly enjoying it, moving on and not feeling guilty. I would say the reason why you are feeling so bad in yourself is because you decided to take on a whole 50. But sure can't you try again?? Feel proud that you did the whole 30. Dust yourself down and get up fighting again. Feelings of guilt etc are only going to make things worse. You made your decision to eat the dates and so forth. Don't look at it as a failure. Instead note to yourself what triggered the cravings and become consciously aware of it. Knowing that for the next time will help you. Feel good for what you have achieved and move on in that feeling. 30 days of a strict protocol is tough and you did it :-) it is what it is. You ate carbs, no point worrying about it. Bringing conscious awareness to our eating habits is in my mind the most important thing that we can learn from the whole 30. You don't need to feel like you have to punish yourself. Maybe you should just go enjoy your holiday, relax and then come back to anothe whole 50?? If you choose. Remember no one is holding a gun to your head to make you do this. You are making the right food choices to make you a healthier person. You are trying to tackle your sugar Dragon that pounced on you out of nowhere! Now you know that can happen it will be easier the next time.

Feel proud not down. You have done amazingly! Now go enjoy that holiday and come back with all your armour to fight that dragon!!!

What Tanya said. The biggest lesson I've learned eating this way is that the choices I make about food don't make me good or bad. They might make me more or less healthy but that isn't something to feel guilty about. Learning to ride your own bike after Whole30 is a process all on its own. And you didn't fail your Whole30...you finished it. A lot of people keep doing Whole30 style until they just make a choice like you did. One thought on why it happened. I usually have that eat all the carbs thing now when I've not been properly fueling my workouts and my glycogen gets too low or when it is that time of the month. Those are things to think about and recognize so you can adjust accordingly. Did you eat things that were actually off plan? How far off did you go? If you went way off I would suggest doing Whole30 for a couple of days until you feel great and then doing your reintroduction phase before your holiday so you can enjoy your holiday being able to ask the question "Is it worth it?" and knowing the answer. Then maybe do another Whole30 (or 15) when you get back to reset. This is a great article for navigating post Whole30 land: http://whole9life.com/2011/04/whole9s-guide-to-nutritional-off-roading/

Bottom line - NO GUILT! It happened, acknowledge and move on. :D

Both points above are very well said.  You put a lot of good effort into completing 30 days of very strict eating.  No one is expected to keep to a diet that strict forever, and once in a while we all need to have something 'off plan'.  Just don't let it snowball into 3 or 4 straight meals...or longer.  Just enjoy every bite, and then starting with the next meal, get right back on the wagon and keep doing what you now know how to do very well.
