Do you need to adjust Magnesium dose after a while?

We completed our whole 30 at the end of July and thoroughly enjoyed the deep, restorative sleep every night. We are attributing that delicious sleep to better eating and Magnesium. I have been taking a 200mg tablet every night since the end of June and have slept really, really well....until the last week or so. I've been waking up between 3-4am and struggling to get back to sleep. NOOOO!!!! This is what used to happen to me BEFORE the whole30.

So, I'm wondering...does the body get used to a certain dosage? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! I want to sleep until my alarm goes off again!

Thanks!

Colleen

I corresponded with the Hartwigs about this in 2010 when I first started supplementing with magnesium. They said the effect of the magnesium remains the same over time. In other words, the effect does not wear off. They have been taking Natural Calm (magnesium for years). You should not raise your dose above the recommended limit. Firstly because some is good, but too much can cause problems and secondly because more is not likely to give you the result you want. I would suggest looking for something else that may be disturbing your sleep - change in food, habits, patterns, stress...

Thanks Tom-

I'm not really sure what the "recommended dose" is? I've read different suggestions-anywhere from 200mg up to 1000mg! I'm also wondering if I'm not feeling that "end of summer" panic as it's almost time to go back to school...only 9 more days! Food hasn't changed too much-still eating compliant about 90% of the time and when we go off, it's not too much. I'm going to try no tv or computer for an hour before I go to bed and see how that works...one more reason to cancel cable!

I agree with Tom.

Take a look at stress and food.

Waking at 3am generally indicates that blood sugar is crashing and cortisol is rising too early. A small snack of fat before bed has helped me with this before.

Megan-what sort of small snack of fat do you suggest?
