JAvery
Hello! I finished my first Whole30 three weeks ago. Since it ended, I've pretty much continued eating as if I were still in it. I did however try to reintroduce dairy twice and that went horrible. Tonight I had my first real 'splurge' meal since my Whole30, which consisted of 10 wings (5 lemon pepper, 5 mild) and french fries. No ketchup for the fries but I did dip one fry in their awesome ranch. That was enough just to give me the taste of it. Yum! But now that I've eaten the meal and had some time to think about it, I'm terrified that this one splurge meal will lead me down a slippery slope of going back to my pre-Whole30 eating. I realize it was one meal, but honestly I feel fine and the fact that I'm not feeling horrible after eating foods I haven't eaten in a month worries me that it will lead to unhealthy eating. Sort of like when you have a taste of sugar after not having it for a month and then you find yourself sitting around thinking of sugary treats! Has anyone else had this worry after splurging? How often do you allow yourself 'splurge' meals yet still feel in control of your eating? Thanks!
leahcarn
I really love the guide to nutritional offroading somewhere on the whole30 website. It walks you through "is it worth it" to consider your splurge in terms of the effect it will have on you, short and long term. After my first whole30, I still ate mostly according to whole30 rules, and probably splurged once a week or so on a little bit of dark chocolate or similar. I would always get "straight back on the wagon" after, and I think that mentality stopped it from becoming an all-out binge
Physibeth
This worry about "splurging" is why we ask you to remove guilt from you food decision making process. We all have non-compliant meals from time to time, some more often than others. What you need to decide for yourself is that when you make the choice to have a worth it treat you didn't do anything wrong. That allows the treat to be a treat and you can move on from there. Now I will note that I have found some foods to trigger a psychological response in me where I can't stop eating them. But don't create the response with worry. Note when it happens and add that to your decision making process when you ask if something is worth it. So aside from worry are you feeling out of control right now? Or did you enjoy a fun meal and are ready to have your next one be compliant?
JAvery
I don't necessarily feel out of control right now, but I know me. I've gained and lost the same pounds over and over because I'm good until I start to stray. Then one slip-up meal becomes a slip-up day which becomes a 'I'll go back on plan on Monday' thing and just goes down hill fast. So I guess knowing that is even more reason to continue all that I learned during my Whole30 and not really stray at all. It turned out my 'Splurge meal' wasn't really worth it anyways. I was up most of the night, mind racing, no sign of being tired even at 2am. On top of that, when I did force myself to go to bed, I had heartburn all night. So totally not worth it! jent103
That sounds like a great learning experience for me, not a reason for worry! Eating mostly Whole30 has really helped me figure out what certain foods do to me. For example, I really don't have a huge sugar dragon (I'd rather have salt!), but I know now that if I eat dessert with dinner, I won't sleep as well. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes it's not. And gluten doesn't mess with my stomach, but it does make me feel like a zombie in large doses, and repeated exposure makes my skin go crazy. But I didn't know all of that till I'd been eating mostly Whole30 for a few months. So my usual philosophy is - stick to Whole30 when I cook for myself; make the best choices I can when I'm not cooking for myself; and when it is either worth it or out of my control, know (or observe) the consequences and get back to my best choices as soon as I can. It gets easier the longer you do it!
Angelina
I like to put things in the context of 'back-in-the-old-days' - as in, there was a time when 'refined' foods, such as refined flour and refined sugar - were only used for 'refined' occasions. Such as a for a wedding, or a christening, or a birthday. Now, people are eating like every day is special occasion. There's nothing wrong with simple.
