rzarley
Hey all! I am on day 4, and have been doing pretty well. I was just hoping as many peopel as possible would chime in with certain brand name products they buy, if it's unusual what it is, and where they purchased it. I have specifically been looking for canned (preferably pouched) tuna, and compliant bacon. But I'm interested in what is in everyone's kitchen. Thanks! jent103
Just a heads up - you always need to check labels on the products in your area, even if someone says they're compliant, because formulations can vary by region. For example, some people say Brand X of chicken broth is compliant, but in my area, the ingredients list some form of sweetener or additives. Frustrating but true! That said, Trader Joe's canned tuna should be compliant, if you have one in your area. I also get my almond butter there (beware if this is a food without brakes for you!). Some people have found compliant pouch tuna, but I have not in my area, though I haven't looked in awhile. The bacon MeadowLily linked to is at my Whole Foods (though they're often out of it); my Publix recently started carrying Maverick bacon (which seems to have some sort of connection to Pederson's) and is compliant. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted September 15, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 15, 2014 Wild Planet brand tuna is compliant, and does come in individual serving size packets as well as cans. They contain just tuna and sea salt. I found them at Sprout's but their website has a Where To Buy section -- you could see if it's sold anywhere near you. Moderators Tom Denham Posted September 15, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 15, 2014 There is an important reason that we do not maintain lists of compliant products! Echoing what jent103 said, you have to read labels on anything you buy because products vary by region and vendors change their products and something that was compliant may be reformulated with non-compliant ingredients. You really can't solicit recommendations from people without running a high risk that you will screw up your Whole30.
rzarley
I fully understand the need to still check labels. I really do, but it's helpful to know where some people get their complaint foods, and what things you kind of need to buy online. To help save time and give me a starting point. And also to get ideas about what foods I haven't thought of that are great to have around.
Xandra
Costco's coconut oil, avocado oil (to make mayonnaise), organic ground beef, chicken, and bison; Kirkland brand marinara sauce is compliant in my area. Frozen vegetables, although they took out my favorite frozen kale and now sell bags of kale & quinoa mixed (ugh!). They also started adding edamame to the frozen mixed veg that I feed my kids. Sleeve
Costco's organic EVOO is one of the best rated for quality and consistency. I rely on Pomi and Muir Glen (fire roasted) for tomatoes, and Rao's for marinara. Bob's Red Mill provides good flour alternatives and unsweetened coconut which are compliant when used as a minor ingredient rather than paleofication of treats. Native Forest and Thai Kitchen for coconut milk, and Thai Kitchen for curry pastes, although with ingredient help from Savory Spice Shop, I've started making my own curry pastes. Tipping my hat to Michelle Tam at NomnomPaleo, Red Boat is the fish sauce. Bubbies for sauerkraut. Lindsay Naturals for olives. Westbrae Natural for stone ground mustard. Pompeiian for vinegars. I have not yet found compliant chipotles in adobo, sriracha, or unsalted chicken stock. In all three cases, I make my own now. It's usually one in five trips I venture into the market center aisles. Most days, everything comes from the produce and store packaged meat departments so those don't have brand names to share.
