Sugar Dragon help

NinaJ

Recommended Posts

Hello my name is Nina and I am a sugar addict.

I am on day 8 today. Headaches coming and going, otherwise feeling pretty good.

I love to cook and am really enjoying trying these new recipes from the book. Everything is tasty, I don't really miss cheese, noodles or bread. However, I believe my Sugar Dragon is still controlling me. He has me sneaking fruit snacks (when I know I shouldn't be) and instead of cookies for dessert (which used to me my norm), I am eating fruit every night after dinner. I feel I am overeating fruits to get my sugar fix...and I need help!

Any advice or tips you may have on silencing my sugar dragon for good is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Don't feed the sugar dragon with sweet foods.   :)

Make all your snacks consist of a mini-meal containing a protein, vegetable and fat.

If you're needing snacks because you're hungry in between meals, you might want to review your meals.  You want to be sure your meals consist of 1-2 palms of protein, 1-3 cups of veggies and the appropriate amount of compliant fat.  You know you hit the right amount when they satiate you for 4-5 hours.

Also, be sure you're staying sufficiently hydrated throughout the day. Aim for drinking 1/2 an ounce of water per pound of body weight, daily.

think I'm doing good with the protein and veggies...I'm gonna have to play closer attention. I will make sure I'm consuming the right snacks, especially PWO. Also, I'm definitely not drinking enough water!

Thank you for the great advice, Chris!

Instead of eating something after dinner, force yourself to go for a walk.

My other trick is that I eat very hearty portions of meat, fat and veggies at every meal. Remember, the Meal Template outlines the minimum you should be eating. I always eat 2 palm-sized protein serving, a little extra fat and close to 3 cups of veggies.  Usually I am more full than I think I should be and have trouble getting the last few bites down. I found that if I didn't do that, I inevitably got hungry between meals. FWIW, I lost 8 lbs doing it this way on my first Whole30 (and I was not trying/expecting to lose weight). Also, remember that if you do want to lose a few pounds, waiting a minimum of 4 hours between meals is important.

Frantastic that is a great tip, thanks! I'll definitely start brushing my teeth right after dinner.

Ultrarunner girl, I do have quite a few pounds to go! :( That's why I want to make sure I stick to the plan! Thanks for the great advice!

That would be awesome! This is what I ate yesterday:

Breakfast: 1 coffee w/ coconut milk (about 2 tbsp.). I did no coffee for a few days but decided I prefer it without sugar than nothing at all. :)

2 eggs with sweet potatoes, onion and brussels sprouts hash (about 1.5 - 2 cups)

PWO Snack: 1 hard boiled egg with mustard and pickle on top.

Lunch: Left over Moroccan chicken (about 1.5 palm fulls) w/ cauliflower "rice" and green beans (about 1.5 cups)

Dinner: Romaine and spinach salad w/ tuna, .5 hard boiled egg, red onions, tomatoes and avocado dressing. Also, 2 small pieces of melon.

Normally, I would have eaten fruit for mid afternoon snack and dessert (about an hour after dinner). Yesterday, I really tried to overcome that. Other than that, it's pretty much what I eat on a typical day.

Assuming your coffee is caffeinated, are your drinking it before you have Meal 1?  Caffeine can act as an appetite suppressant.  The recommendation, if you're going to have caffeine, is to drink it after meal 1.

When eggs are your protein, the serving size is the number of whole eggs you can hold in one hand. For most folks, that's 3-4 eggs.

Salad can fill you up initially but may not satiate you for long. You might try switching to more cooked vegetables at meal 3 and see if that helps you.

Yes, I drink my coffee before my first meal...so that I am awake enough to make it. ;) I will make sure to save it after my breakfast.

I agree with the salad part not keeping me full as long. I need to plan better and pre-cook some meals for when I don't really feel like cooking or don't have enough time.

Thank you for your help, Chris!!
