Lburnett88
So I am on day 26 of Whole 30. Had on and off felt great, I have definitely lost weight, clothes fit better, sleeping like a baby, more energy during day and much stronger when exercising (Climbing/bouldering is my general weapon of choice). I also get really bad IBS, and while I still have had a few occasions of needing the toilet RIGHT NOW, the bloating and pain has completely gone. Then today, I ate some sausages. I checked them last night and completely fine:Pork Shoulder (97%), Salt, Spices, Water, White Balsamic Vinegar (0.3%) [Wine Vinegar, Grape Must, Antioxidant (Sulphur Dioxide)], Preservative (Sodium Sulphite), Sausage Casing (Natural Pork)I was so excited, I bought two packs and had two sausages for breakfast. I mentioned this to a colleague who has just started too and she pointed out that sulphites are banned. Something I had completely forgotten. I then discovered a post on here that said lots of coconut milk has sulphites in so I googled my brand, and I have been accidentally consuming sulphites all the way through. So back to day one for me :-(.It doesn't affect my plans too much as I wasn't planning on reintroducing anything yet, as I know it's helped my IBS and I have a related operation coming up. (Although I would perhaps allow the occasional Paleo Baked good thrown in, and more lenience with off-roading, following the road map). But I just feel like an absolute moron. :-(. Really down. GoJo09
You're not an almighty failure - you made an honest mistake. You've had great results despite this, and carrying on with a renewed understanding of the rules means you'll continue to have great results. Moderators Tom Denham Posted September 26, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 26, 2014 And this may explain your lingering IBS symptoms. Sulphites are irritating to the gut.
Guest
I don't think your month was a total flop! It was a learning experience for sure but look how great you did even with those few noncompliant ingredients! Imagine how kickass you are going to be this round!!! You are going to ROCK THIS! Tessina
I know I'm month late but this popped up while answering another post. And since I had a similar issue. Your not an almighty failure at all.. nor the only person to complete or almost complete your Whole 30 and find out you've not been complaint. The fact that you worked hard and got to where you did it is what is great. The Whole 30 isn't easy. You missed something, we are all human, it happens. You have not logged in since you made your initial post on this thread, I hope that doesn't mean you've given up. Your not a failure, your actually a success. GLC1968
I did something similar and I'm going to post it here in case the OP or anyone else is reading this and thinking of throwing in the towel on day 26 or later. I did my first Whole30 while recovering from foot surgery (in fact, I had my second surgery during the Whole30) and it went well. I lost like 9 or 10 lbs and I discovered that eating this way allowed me to be a truly good sleeper for the first time in 40-something years. A few months later, I was more than half-way through my second Whole30 when I was absently staring at my fish oil caplet bottle in the open cabinet (it's at eye level), while waiting for my coffee to brew. All of a sudden, I saw that my fish oil had soy in it. It's not listed in the ingredients, but there is a disclaimer that says 'product contains soy'. I was LIVID! Not only is that not compliant (and sneaky!!) but I'm super sensitive to soy and gave it up many, many years prior to learning about Whole30. Then it hit me, my previous Whole30 was non-compliant too since this was a huge bottle that I had been using for months. I was so bummed! I immediately stopped taking it but figured that the 'damage had been done'. I continued on to 45 days that round (just by chance, not because I was planning to extend it). Since then, I've sourced a better fish oil that does not have soy in it. I've also done two more complete Whole30s. And you know what? I still count my first two Whole30's as successes too. Maybe they weren't perfect, but I still reaped many benefits and I learned volumes about my food sensitivities using the reintroduction protocols. And really, that first Whole30 was the biggest eye-opener of them ALL, so you better believe that 'it counts' in my book! If this happens to you, don't despair. Don't call yourself a failure. Don't give up. Learn and move on. It all counts.
kirkor
You still had a "Whole26+sulfites" which will make your next Whole30 much easier!
lelani
Wow you did so great, not your fault and think what you have learned. I am only on my day 28, But I have learned so much, sure hope you haven't given up. I am re-evaluating and looking into a few things I might not have thought about, but by no means do I think I haven't succeeded. I have and am looking forward to my whole60
wb03
I am very, very late on this post. But I made the same mistake with sulfur dioxide in my apple cider vinegar. I am feeling like such a failure and I am on day 21 - AND I already restarted on day 10, because of sulphites in my coconut milk! The irony!! I have also felt really bloated all through my whole30 thus far and I feel like the sulfur dioxide might be to blame...feeling really low. I am crazy about checking labels and asking what is in everything and clarifying my own butter. This is really devastating...

It really sucks to find out you've messed up, especially when it was totally accidental and you thought you did everything right. But please don't feel devastated. You still have done great things for yourself for the last 21 days.
