tamerar
I am very excited to start on the 1st! I have pretty much been eating "real food" since the beginning of October. I have lost almost 20 lbs and am feeling great! This will be my first Whole30.
PurpleCloud
Praxisproject, thanks for the feedback. I think I will just stick to the forums for now... I think I have enough on my plate without having to figure out how facebook works. Thanks again!
sidcianicliff
Holy wow there are a lot of us this month! I think there were maybe 40 in the one I did previously! Does anyone have any suggestions for sweet potatoes? What I've been doing is cutting them into 1/2" rounds and cooking them with olive oil, salt and pepper. I'd like to try something different, but all I can come up with is brown sugar and butter (both obviously not compliant). I'm contemplating trying it out as a hash for breakfast. I just need ideas as I'm bored with the way I've been doing them. I roast a lot of sweet potato at dinner time so that I can use it for breakfast the next day. I peel the roasted potato and fry it up in some coconut oil and then put two fried eggs on top. Sometimes I'll add some chicken apple sausage. It's my favorite way to eat the sweet potato cuz it's all carmelized on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside. YUM! The hash is good too... but I prefer it this way. Just an idea. Rockin'Robin
Hi All and Happy New Year! This is my first time at Whole 30 but I'm hoping to be successful! But definitely need encouragement and a team to make this happen! I have achy joints most days and a foggy brain. I definitely see a difference when I take out gluten. Excited to see how the rest of the No list works for my system. I've already been eliminating some foods and beverages so it's not too hard those first few days. And I tell ya, I already feel pretty darn great! And I've been using Melissa Joulwan's Well Fed cookbook for more than a year now and LOVE her recipes! If you haven't tried her recipes, I would highly recommend trying some. In fact, I made the Chocolate Chili recipe yesterday and am eating it for lunch today. Oh and the book by Melissa and Dallas, It Starts with Food has been very educational. Over Christmas, I found out that my 8 year old daughter has a lot of food allergies and when I read. It Starts with Food, I see that my daughter would benefit greatly from eating Whole30 as well. I've eliminated all of the foods that she is allergic to and then after my first Whole30, I will take her through it as well. Thanks for sharing your month with me! I feel honored, excited and nervous!
mrsbeccajcantrell
Hi everyone, I've been reading about Whole30 for a while and following various blogs. I'm finally ready to jump in. My husband, myself and my best friend are going to commit! Anyone have general advice for first timers? Also, my best friend is concerned because she doesn't typically like breakfast foods (she hates eggs) and also doesn't like the texture of ground meat regardless of what kind of meat it is. Is anyone else like that at all? Any suggestions?
Administrators ladyshanny Posted December 30, 2014 Administrators Share Posted December 30, 2014 The hugest tip for someone starting out is to plan, prepare, plan some more, visualize upcoming events or challenges, prepare a bit more and then review that plan again. Haha. In seriousness though, planning and preparation are the absolute number one key to success....or...should I say, lack of planning and preparation is one of the most common reasons people go sideways, even if they had rock solid intentions to start. You get hungry, tired, cranky and maybe you're not feeling so hot. You definitely want to have backup plans or something put aside for those days! As far as breakfast foods, your friend could google "Whole 30 + egg free breakfast" or something to that effect and get more resources, threads and ideas than she would ever need. One of the most prevalent breakfast ideas is to eat leftovers. Once you can crush your preconceived notion of what breakfast foods are, it opens up a world of possibilities! As far as ground meat goes, it is fully possible to do a Whole30 without ground meats. Canned salmon/tuna/sardines, fresh fishes, shellfish, beef roast, beef steak, stewing beef, fajita beef, flank steak, chicken breasts and thighs, turkey breast and thighs, lamb, rabbit, venison, pork loin, pork shoulder, pork chops, pork tenderloin. Doing it!
Yes, me!!! Read the book a year ago and I am committed this year. I"m turning 50 on the 1st, so I can't think of a better present to give myself.
NatJ
Hi All! I'm starting my 3rd (or 4th...can't remember now) Whole 30 on 1/1/15 and got a group of friends committed to doing it with me this time! I love eating clean and need a new jumpstart to get back on track after the holidays - and this time I have a goal of losing 10 lbs by my birthday (Feb 15) and another 10 by a trip to Miami in March. Here we go!
praxisproject
Agapita - I see your replies If you want a particular person to read them, just add their name at the start of your comment. If you like kefir, you could switch to kombucha or make a dairy-free coconut version. The dairy free part is important so you can find out if dairy poses any problems for you. Very rarely would you go 30 days without dairy (I know I hadn't) without something like the Whole30 I have my coffee with coconut cream, coconut milk or homemade nut milk. I also quite like the hibiscus-based "fruit" teas, like Twinings Cranberry & Pomegranate (always read tea labels!).
praxisproject
mlowell57 - I found the template meals really helped with my blood sugar and carb boom-crash cycles. Don't be afraid of the starchy veggies like sweet potato, especially in your first week, without the sugar (and for me, dairy too), your cravings will settle down. juliekayg - If you're a regular luncher, see if one of your local lunch places will design you a compliant lunch you can have every day (it won't hurt to tell them you've asked one of the other places too) smcwh30 - The biggest change away from smoothies is allowing chewing time If you like easy prep, have leftovers for breakfast or something you can make in advance. I really like things baked in muffin tins, so they're portable.
SheilaT
Hello My name is Sheila and I am starting or more like finally committing to do the Whole30. I stumbled upon Melissa and Dallas' book sometime in the summer and my Whole30 experience was more like a Whole6 months... I gradually got rid of grains, and breads from my diet and my culprit are creamers in my coffee and probably the occasional chocolate and cookies, pizzas here and there In the last year, I've had to use an inhaler again as I began to have asthma and allergies. I am curious by modifying my diet even more how it would affect my allergies. I am glad to join everyone and be a support for one another and yes we can all do it, with no sugar or grains or anything that is non-paleo all for our optimal health and well-being. praxisproject
mrsbeccajcantrell - Your friend doesn't have to eat any ground meat or eggs if she doesn't want to If she's not allergic to eggs, she might want to try the homemade mayo, as it's lovely and great for all kinds of meals. My biggest tip for first timers is to keep a few meals in the freezer (at least 3 serves per person), so you can take a whole day off cooking if you need to. Clothes Make The Girl has really great prep tips and easy cooking techniques like Hot Plates and variations. Reposting from another thread - these links are great for first timers! Nomnompaleo is doing a Whole30 recipe every day for January! Both Melissa Joulwan of Well Fed and theclothesmakethegirl and Michelle Tam of nomnompaleo have put together current fabulous resources for folks undertaking January Whole 30s. Wonderful for new and returning folks, IMHO. Their recipes and tips have made my W30s more manageable, fun and tasty--and I return to their recipes again and again. Terrance
Hi There, I am about to get in on this action, I am starting my Whole30 on the 1st Jan and am looking forward to feeling better inside and out, my partner Sarah is coming along with me, having that support should be a great bonus, but I am also looking to forums, and social media to make us both accountable and to stay on track. I am from Australia so this will throw the dates out by one day, I hope this doesn't cause too much confusion. Good luck too all and stay strong, look forward to helping each other through
leahcarn
I have a confession to make: i started today. I have been eating whole30 for the last 4 days, except for one meal yesterday including rice (day 2 of a hike and I simply did not pack enough calories) so I feel like I'm off on the right foot. Best of luck everyone

wulfie
Hello Whole30 Adventurers! If you are beginning your program on January 1st, please join me here to support each other as we prepare for the food journey of a lifetime! What are you doing to prepare? What questions, concerns, or anxieties do you have? What are you looking forward to? What are you apprehensive about? Have you done a Whole30 in the past? What was it like? Are you a newbie, like me? I look forward to meeting you, and being part of a group that will be encouraging and honest as we make this transition together! Hi, all! In response to politicalmama's questions (which are all good 'uns!)... To prepare, I'm going back over the rules and re-reading ISWF. I'm concerned that I will get tired of the program and having rules. I'm looking forward to making improvements in the gym. I'm apprehensive about having to cook a lot (even with a weekly meal prep!). I've done a couple W30s in the past. One was AWESOME, the other was kinda meh. Totes excited to start this with you guys! leaC
Yes! I'm starting my Whole30 journey on Jan 1 2015 (Sydney time). Ths is my first time participating in a forum with the aim to finally make myself accountable to this committment. Am anticipating some difficult times, going cold turkey from bad food choices and alcohol (especially alcohol), but am equally looking forward to getting support from the community and giving support if I can. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation - good luck everyone! xx

silk
I'm starting on January 2. This will be my second Whole30. I tend to eat fairly paleo, and am not a fan of New Year's resolutions, which this is dangerously close to, but Nom Nom Paleo had the sweetest invitation on her latest post: "grab my hand, and let’s do this thing before I change my mind!" How can anyone refuse that?
Dawnlp
I've requested to join the FB group just because I'm on there all the time anyway. I've attempted W30 before and got 2 weeks in, before a work trip derailed me. I'm eating mostly paleo already (with the huge caveat; I'm a 20+year certified beer judge (hobby) and world beer traveler). Legumes, sugar and grains that are not fermented are no problem as I do not consume. Good goat yogurt/kefir and aged cheeses will be something to pay attention to how much I might miss, and I'm hoping bubbly water and teas will supplant the beer. The plus is that I'm in between jobs right now, so I will have plenty of time to cook, yoga, and not drive by my favorite pub on the way home from work since I'll already be home! Well wishes to us all!
Smstevens70
I'm in! This will be my first Whole 30 experience and I am so excited! I just turned 40 and am tired of feeling poorly all the time. I have 2 amazing kids, a great husband, and love my elementary teaching job.....but being tired and overweight is preventing me from living life fully. I am ready for a change and look forward to the support here on this page!
alester212
Hi there! This will be my first Whole 30 and I'm mostly excited. Haha but also a little nervous because I really don't want to cheat or mess up. I tend to commit to things too quickly and then start making excuses for why I can't follow through, sometimes the excuses start before I even start the actual diet etc. Talk about getting off on the wrong foot!! The bottom line is that I have to make a choice. And I'm making that choice now. Because I'm 34 and I need to take responsibility for my own health. Because I want to feel fully confident in who I am. Because I deserve to be happy and healthy and strong. So here I go, ready or not. Really hoping to find some support/friends/encouragors along the way. We're in this together!
