Father of 5 gets underway

Hi all

I've jumped into the Whole30 programme 2 days ago. I've tried it before but allowed myself to justify being 'normal' after a 10 days last time and eat a 'bit' of bread and a few chocolate treats to eat in 'moderation', which of course lead to 'full on' normal life of daily treats etc!

This time I'm using the extra support of whole daily e-programme and finding that great especially the map of what to expect - now I know 10 days in that those extra cravings and desire to be 'normal' was my brain rebelling and trying to get me back to 'normal' - will watch out for that this time

The other issue I have is blending my whole30 into the daily family life of high school kids and the and family food menu, without being a pain on the family or making eating whole 'special'

So any suggestions on how to manage amongst whole30 amongst a family life would be appreciated

Biggest thing I'm hoping for is better sleep (cut down to 2 coffees a day and all before 10am) and dropping my lifelong chocolate, cake, biscuits craving. I've just been diagnosed with arthritis in my knee so keen to see how cleaning up my food will help that as I want to stay doing Ironman events and need my knees for that!

Looking forward to reading how others are going/have gone

cheers

from New Zealand

I'm always surprised that people refer to eating this way as "special". Yes, it is different from how you used to eat and how your family may choose to continue to eat, but you are eating REAL food. Real, good, delicious, whole food. I guess I don't see what the big deal is? I cook for my family and they either eat it or they don't. Everyone is old enough to make another choice or meal, but I don't cook extra stuff on the nights we are all home. They usually eat what I cook too. I also discovered that my daughter has been eating my leftover sweet potato hash...guess I'll need to make more! :)

You are setting a great example of taking charge of your health and well-being. I bet you might be surprised how easy it is to get the rest of the family on board. Start with dinner. I think it's the easiest meal to introduce everyone to whole30 eating. Let them eat what they want for breakfast and lunch, but have whole30 options available to them.

Good luck to you!

Thanks Colleen

..and it works!

Made my stir fry tonight with coconut oil and chili with the kids finishing their sushi. 'yum, what's that Dad, can I have some'

So will keep doing that

I'm keen for whole30 not to be seen by them as diet or 'special', but normal

Cheers

Roaring into day 3

Came home from an intense dayat work, walked in the door straight into a large plate of Sushi

Stopped, had a cup o herbal tea. Slowed my brain down, then strolled to the fridge and whipped up a quick chili stir fry in coconut oil

When I felt like a cheese burger and fries!

Now, 20 minutes later, instead of feeling full and greasy and still hungry

, I feel calm and fresh

Now, just need to work out how to manage the 'boys book club' session tonight which usually involves a lot of red wine and cheese....

Great job ! My husband and I have 6 kids-so we know the deal. My 4 oldest will eat anything or make their own, but are usually ok with whatever I prepare. My 2 youngest- 13 & 10 are more fussy. We started the Whole 30 6 days ago and I asked that they try everything I make-and if they don't like it, they may make eggs or heat up some leftovers they did like. It has worked out really well- we've even had meals where they "judged" the meal-like on the Cooking Channel and using silly accents have critiqued my work. (Not every meal-that would get kinda old) but for a few breakfasts, it was funny and got them to try a few new things.

I would suggest you lead by example (sounds like you are), then let them have a few options they can do themselves (if old enough) or just leftovers if they don't like what you've prepared. My kids are not on a Whole 30 by any means, but are benefitting from the new things I have prepared and the new mindset we are establishing.

Good luck & Enjoy !!!:)

Really focussing on my 'relationship with food' at this stage, looking a what stimuli drive my cravings and use of food to de-stress or cope with anxiety and pressure. With now knowing its my brain driving it rather than true hunger or need, I'm working on giving my brain other ways of getting 'treated' instead of food. Also looking to break the stimuli-response habit by putting in a 'calming action' after the stimulus to drop the intensity of the reaction = calm the sugar dragon to eventually slay it

Day 6 now. My brain's trying to get me back into the sugar but I'm holding out. Off to Friday sport tonight which usually involves a beer, chips and chocolate.....at first I go 'yummmm' thinking of thatbut then it's immediately replaced with the thought of 'plastic food'

Hi Debbie. I'd read about Whole30 helping you sleep and I couldn't really see how it would. At first, I didn't notice any difference but recently, it's 'kicked in' - deeper, 'sounder', more solid sleep. Plus when I wake up at 3:30, I go back to sleep, Was totally shokced htis morning to wake up and see 6:30am on my clock, usually that's 1:30 - 3:30 - 4:30...then waking up shattered.

Why is it working? I think getting my brain out of sugar addiction. I think it was waking me up looking for sugar plus the subsequent drop in wild hormonal swings means my brain is calm and settled so I sleep

loving it :)
