Ok, jumping in here at T-minus 2 days until the July 1st W30. Thanks for having me aboard!

This is my 7th? Whole30. Plus I've done an 8 week and a 10 week paleo challenge (which I did W30 style) with my CrossFit box and then there was a month of random clean paleo that led into a short keto experiment. That is why I know I want to do this. In just 3 days I felt mental clarity like I have never felt before. But, I did taper myself off the carbs to get there. I expect it to take a few weeks to experience that again.

I'm turning 35 soon and I have ~50 pounds I'd like to shed. I am recovering from a wrist fracture I sustained on April 1st (haha, thanks Universe for the April Fool's joke). The head trainer at my box is very experienced and fortunately he is helping me rehab my wrist. The point is, my workout routine is light on the metcons and more focused on strength right now, so I feel this is a good down time to change up the diet.

Basically, just looking to find my optimal health place and I think the low carb approach may be it. Excited to get this show on the road!

I have had Haggis - and enjoyed it.  I suppose it would depend on what the brains look like.  Prepared like haggis, or sausage, or whatever, probably not a problem.  However, if it was sitting chilled in the skull (a-la Indian Jones), Im not sure......  Same with bugs - cooked in a casserole - ok.  On there own, not so much.

All that being said - I must admit I have eaten some pretty interesting things in my life (fish eyeball, jellyfish tentacles, just to name a couple).

I suppose it would depend on what the brains look like.

In Greece the norm is to roast the entire head on a spit (although in the North they also boil them), then slice in half through the skull so you get two identical halves - the brain sits in a little 'bowl'  in each half and it just looks kind of creamy, and tastes kind of creamy too.... Once the brain is done you can chow down on the rest of the skull - the meat on the cheeks being nice & tender. There's not a single part of the sheep they don't eat in Greece and it's all good.

They do the same with cows heads although these tend to be roasted in the oven - cow cheek is some of the best beef I've ever had.

Good point (and whole article is good too):

**************************

My guess is that some of the people who claim low-carb killed their thyroid, derailed their menstrual cycle, and all that other stuff, were following very low carb diets while also overtraining, not sleeping enough, having other sources of mental & emotional stress, and very likely, most probably, ding-ding-ding, we have a winner -- not eating enough total calories. Women of all ages, but particularly, young women, tend to fall into this calorie hole. Was it low-carb that derailed their hormones, or was it trying to burn not one candle at both ends, but more like ten candles at three ends (if thats even possible), while basically starving themselves? Whether or not they were aware of it, that may be what was happening: at a cellular level, they were starving. (Even if they didn't feel especially hungry throughout the day. I

’m talking about the cellular level, where we’re not always cognizant of what’s going on.)

Oldie but goodie from Robb Wolf on the question of carbs in the post-workout meal:

http://robbwolf.com/2009/07/01/post-workout-nutrition-high-or-low-carb/

...

but part of what we want with this PWO meal is the MAINTENANCE of insulin sensitivity. If we totally top off our glycogen stores PWO we impair insulin sensitivity and make it damn tough to lean out. So, one way to look at this is the a LC-PWO meal is focusing on muscular recovery and growth, while minimizing or limiting the effects of insulin or carbohydrate.

Whole30, ketogenic style!

DISCLAIMER: this will be my 3rd "official" Whole30, and I have many years under my belt of eating paleo-esque. I am fairly lean and fit, and have good bloodwork. Keto (and even W30) is not a 'quick fix' for me and I'm not looking for anything magical. It's simply an experiment in a different way of eating.

A lot of people doing keto use dairy quite a bit, but there are some 'dairy free keto' resources (still looking for more):

Goodness, it's been a whole year since I've been here! Sorry to abandon ship... :-P

Started fresh with keto Whole30 on January 3rd, doing well with it, solidly in ketosis and working my way through the usual stages (fatigue, a bit flu-y, headache, hungry, grumpy, etc...) and now (Day 7) energy is getting better and cravings are gone. Sleep is still a little weird, but that should work itself out soon (esp with the extra electrolytes I'm taking). I kept in high fat dairy for the first few days to ease the transition not feel too 'deprived' - I know, ridiculous, esp when I think about people in this country and around the world who don't have enough food, period, and do not have the luxury of being choosy about their food at all, let alone being able to be so particular as eating keto Whole30, but it did work for me to keep the HF dairy for a bit and now I'm done with it since it is very congesting.

How are you doing all doing with the keto Whole30 plan?
