GF Chris, excellent suggestions for traveling--and special thanks for the cooler tips.  I thought I might take some of the cooler items and stash them at the office.  I made it through a party last night.  Have noticed that my skin and eyes already look so much better.  It's motivating!

I'm sorry for your loss.

If you're travelling by car, I'd suggest packing a cooler of compliant items. This article has some great tips http://whole9life.com/2011/07/whats-in-your-cooler/. I'd also bring along a compliant cooking fat.

If it were me, I would contact my traveling companions and hosts now and explain you're on a food elimination plan, there's a certain way you need to eat, and you will be bringing appropriate foods to keep you on plan (or buy it when you get there) and not require food prep of your hosts. You could even offer to cook a compliant meal for your hosts to thank them for their hospitality.

If there's a chance you'll dine out, start researching restaurants in the area and review online menus for possible options. If there will be a mercy meal or collation after the services, do the best you can there: have a good template breakfast that day and bring compliant snacks along, in case your options are limited.

Thanks so much for writing back! And thank you for the condolences. I'm going to be traveling by train and then renting a car - might be able to handle a small cooler. I really like the cooler idea & I can leave it in the car -- the good thing about winter in the northeast US! We will be dining out - probably for most meals except breakfast, so I'll start researching. I really want to stay on plan! Any favorite snack suggestions out there? Thanks again in advance!

Seagrey, be sure to check out the travel and dining out section on the forum. It has a ton of suggestions. My favorite snacks are simple raw veggies and almonds (pre-measured portions so I don't eat too many in one sitting), hard boiled eggs for protein or compliant jerky if you can find some.

Hi!

We have a few go to snacks:

- Almond butter (the just almonds and oil kind) in the individual packs - I know they sell them at Target, but it can be tough to find plain (not vanilla or maple syrup). Put on celery or apples.

- Dehydrated apple slices - Costco sells a huge bag for like $7 that is complaint - 27 servings. Of course whole apples are better but these are a little easier and they wont' get bruised in a bag.

- Make some paleo ranch and cut up lots of veggies. Pack ranch in little mini containers (2oz disposable cups can be purchased at Gordon Foods if you have one).

- the "on the go" prepacked olives could be a good option too.

- Deli meat "wrapped" around cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, etc...

Thanks,

Marcy

Day 5 here, and I'm sick as a dog. I played "carb flu or real cold" for the last 36 hours, and at about 2 am it became clear that I'm in "real cold" territory. I'm very frustrated because I had a packed weekend of shopping and cooking planned, plus my favorite classes at the gym.

With any luck, I'll beat it over the weekend and be back in the game soon without having gone off-plan. But...so disheartening.

Susan, I did that end of day one, then woke up with fever and nausea to point of not being able to move on Tuesday. My whole family had had it the previous week to some extent. I just looked at it like I was going to feel like garbage anyway, so at least my family was sympathetic because they felt the same way. I feel you about the plans though... when all you want to do is sleep it off, you don't end up getting much accomplished. Here's hoping you feel better quickly!! Hopefully you have some bone broth made... I wish I had!

This may sound weird but I been kind of worried about my progress because I haven't experienced most of these symptom that everyone is discussing. I do have a mild headache when I wake up but it last for like 10 minutes, I feel like it more related to the temperatures dropping though. I am not anymore tired than before I started ( I'm a mother of two very small children, so full nights sleep is a thing of the past) . Is it possible not to have any adverse symptoms during the program. I know it's silly but it's been 5 days ( 4 1/2 days) and I don't really feel any different.

Yes. Everyone experiences the program days differently.  Keep on truckin'  :)

Day 5 I started strong, but now my brain is trying to talk me into quitting.  I noticed this is typical in the afternoons.  Is this normal?  I suppose it doesn't help it's Friday and my typical wine night is out of the question...

Really want a glass of wine tonight! Long, busy week. Would be so relaxing!! Ugh!

I understand your pain.  My husband has been kind enough to not open a bottle yet until tonight.   I am strong. I am we'moon. I can resist the temptation for 30 days or more if I WANT TO and I DO

Anybody have really "foggy" thinking today?  I feel like I can't concentrate on anything, or keep my train of thought!

Yes That was me all day today.  I can't wait for the alternative.  I did the Whole 30 mid September and by the end of the 30 days not only was my thinking sharper but also seemed to be able to make better choices.  Which helped me to find a new job in November and then I noticed that as I slowly started to add foods back into my diet that the job started to get harder because I was having problems concentrating or remembering.  I will definitely be more compliant after this whole 30 now that I have tested the waters.

Day 5 of the Whole30...still can't kick the snack after dinner.  I think I am trying to replace my glass of wine.  I am fighting headaches (still)...when are they going to go away!?!? Other than that, I am not noticing hunger or any intense cravings for any particular food (just maybe a craving for some more convenient dinners, coming home and cooking is a new thing for me).

I second the immersion blender for making mayo.... Revolutionized my mayo making... no more time spend slowly drizzling oil into the food processor. Literally 20 seconds and DONE!!!

I tried 2 days ago, and failed miserably, it was all completely liquid, a disaster down the drain :(

So, I've been doing great, but yesterday 2 things happened. 1. I had green tea and didn't notice I it was flavored and had soy lecithin in it (ugh) and 2. I went out to eat for a work function and did so freakin good, but this morning realized I had 3 marinated mushrooms (the only not fresh item) and I have no idea if it was ok. Last night I decided it was prob marinated in a vinegar, but I really don't know.

Do I start over? I'm feel really discouraged by that.

I feel really good today. Woke up with a ton of energy. I had sweet potato pancakes (a mashed sweet potato with an egg thrown in), sausage, and some grape tomatoes with a drizzle of olive oil and a dash of salt. I was worried about the weekend, but so far, so good. I am going to make a list of the things I enjoy doing (as much as eating) and refer to it when I think I want something sweet. I am absolutely addicted to sugar and days 3 and 4 were really hard. I feel like I might be over the hump. I did Whole 30 exactly a year ago, so I knew going in this time that Week One would be difficult. Thank you to everyone for your stories and support. It makes a tremendous impact and keeps me inspired and motivated!! :)

Take a look at this article and decide: http://whole30.com/2014/06/really-start-whole30/

@Jenonit - I agree with GFChris (that article is very helpful btw). You can make an exception or two if it was really an accident and you didn't realize what was in it, but this should make you more aware of reading labels and hidden ingredients. I'm trying to avoid eating out at all during these 30 days, and if I must I'll probably eat a salad and bring my own dressing. Boring, obviously, but then at least I don't have to be that person asking for dry cooked meats and all the ingredients in every marinade. I was a waitress for years and I feel like I die a little inside every time I have to make special requests like that.

Last night I made Melissa Joulwan's liver and onions (http://theclothesmakethegirl.com/2012/04/17/beef-liver-with-parsley-onions-lemon/) which is a staple around here. I actually get as much liver as I want for free with my meat CSA, because apparently no one else wants it! I do have my parents over for dinner every time I make it though, because my husband and kids won't eat it and I have to make them something else.

I also had sautéed asparagus with balsamic vinegar and half a baked sweet potato with some homemade coconut butter. This was my first time trying a sweet potato that way and I swear it was even better than butter and brown sugar!
