cookin'mama
That was actually our experience with that dish also. WAY too acidic and citrusy. We tried the revision with pineapple and orange juice but that just made it too cloyingly sweet. I think next time I would try the orange pineapple with a good dose of lemon. But there are a million carnitas recipes out there that I may not bother trying that one again. Note, that is the only recipe I have EVER made from her stuff that I didn't love. I agree. I have had great luck with her other recipes. The next time I cook a pork shoulder I am going to make one of these recipes: https://againstthegrainfitness.wordpress.com/2013/01/19/crispy-pork-carnitas/ http://againstallgrain.com/2013/06/14/chipotle-barbacoa-tacos/ My husband leaves for Germany this evening. I elected not to go because I knew that, not speaking the language and having to order three meals a day in a restaurant, would be too stressful. Plus, who could resist a German beer? Don't feel too sorry for me, though; he is going again in the spring and I will be on board. I have decided to carry on for another 15 days, although I have to admit, Valentine's Day will be a challenge. I always make my husband's favorite splurge dinner, steak diane, and we always open a special bottle of wine. Perhaps I will experiment with a whole30 compliant sauce. I will have to try to find a different compliant dijon mustard, though. I threw away the Whole Foods brand I bought. My Whole 30 super bowl dishes: roasted buffalo chicken wings roasted shrimp with non-compliant cocktail sauce on the side. I like mine plain, anyway. huge veggie tray with homemade ranch dressing snack mix (sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, unsweetened coconut, sauteed in coconut oil and sprinkled with sea salt) raw cashews salad with lemon dressing - homemade croutons and feta cheese served on the side chocolate chili I also made potato leek soup with boursin cheese and will make cornbread for those not on the whole 30. I asked my daughter to bring desserts. Did I say.....GO PATS!!!!

I'm going to try these tomorrow- http://paleogrubs.com/baked-sweet-potato-chips(I usually do my sweet potatoes in cubes) and I found smoked salmon-- i'm going to do cucumber wedges (i like to remove the seeds) wrapped in a piece of it! FeliciaOH
I made Well Fed's Plantain nachos for the Super Bowl party last night and they were a hit! I was so excited to find something really crunchy to enjoy for a change. 1 more day, everyone! What are your plans for reintroduction, if any? I think I'm going to do some legumes first, even though I don't care about having them regularly. I'd just like to have some PB at times. Then, possibly dairy. I tried 2 Larabars (apple pie and chocolate coconut chew) for the first time this past week. Not very exciting for me, but they filled a need at a time when a regular meal wasn't possible. Unfortunately, both times I ended up with huge gas bubbles sitting in my stomach by the end of the day. I'm thinking maybe it was the overall amount of sugar in one sitting? Makes me afraid to add more sugar back into my diet, even though I don't plan to do it regularly. But boy, did that chocolate fondue look good last night! MadscienceM
doing the Day 28 dance.... almost there... I did really well after my last whole 30 of eating very whole 9 and making those "is it worth it choices"... Looking forward to maybe a little dairy on thursday...not sure.... Made Nom Nom paleo's Lime Chile chicken wings last night, they were AWESOME!!! had some roasted potatoes wedges and some homemade Guac... was really good! Kboom
Made it through the weekend! Day 29, it's hard to believe! I'm feeling pretty good, and I don't really have any plans for re-introduction at this point. Frankly the only thing I want is to weigh myself. Hubby ended his whole 30 on day 28 with beer and sweet potato nacho chips with salsa, it could have been worse. I ended up making pulled pork and wings with coleslaw. I made some ranch dip from Well Fed and had a veggie and fruit plate out for snacks. I drank my water and had a tea later and was very happy with my day. I know from past experience that I want to eliminate gluten from my life, and as much sugar as I can. I suppose I need to check out the legumes and dairy, as I really would like to add heavy cream back in my life with my morning tea FeliciaOH, I wouldn't doubt if it was the sugar bomb that made your stomach feel weird, could have been the heavy load of nuts too. Although living here in the Great White North we don't have the same flavors of Lara bars that you guys have in the States so I'm not as familiar with the ingredients on those. MadscienceM, good for you!
shannonmommy
Good Morning! Can you believe it is day 29!! I feel better than ever! I think I will continue with the plan for awhile longer. I have been complaining about coconut milk in my coffee but I am getting used to it. I made a coffee creamer from "Against All Grain" I didn't add the honey or maple syrup but I actually liked it. It is just homemade almond milk and coconut milk and a vanilla bean. It was a little pricey because vanilla beans are $. I may look for some compliant vanilla powder to use next time. Just thought the coffee lovers out there might like to try this. Have a great day and good luck to everyone!! Shannonmommy
SusanB.
Day 29 here as well. Getting ready for some dairy (a previous 30 + reintroduction told me that I'm OK with dairy). Also getting ready to gear up for another 30 later in the month. What did I learn this go-round? That I have to be more conscious of my PCOS. And I need to keep my FWB out of the house - I can not handle them. So next time: no nuts, no almond butter, no flaked coconut. Watch the Omega-6's. Make an effort to eat veggies that are lower-carb/lower glycemic index. I'm taking a few weeks in between, to sort things out, but will be as compliant as possible as many days as possible in there. Jenn1270
I had a VERY difficult weekend. I was compliant, no problem there; but I ended a 11 year friendship this weekend, and I'm just very sad. In the grand scheme of things, it's going to be a very healthy outcome for me, I just need some time to grieve and come to terms with the very hurtful words my friend had to say about me. I have looked in the mirror and identified the problems that are mine, and take responsibility for them, but I cannot make her look in the mirror and do the same, therefore it is beyond time to move on and let life open a new window for me. One thing I realized yesterday afternoon, is that I didn't even feel like emotional munching on something- which is usually my GO to thing when I'm sad or upset....could this perhaps be an amazing sign that I'm tacking one of my biggest beasts/demons? I hope so!! I sure hope everyone's doing well...i wonder how many of us are still here from the original group. I'm going to start a Whole45 thread for anyone who wants to jump on board starting on Wednesday...I'll post a link closer to the time

As far as the hurtful words, try not to rehash them too much...and remember that the things that we are most critical of in other people are the same things that we are least secure with/happy with about ourselves. MadscienceM
@Jenn1970 Sorry to hear about the friendship, but glad that you were able to true to yourself..and way to go on not emotionally eating.. A huge part of my whole 30(s) (OMG I can almost put an s on it!) has been looking at everything I put into my body... not just food, but all the 'ingredients' of my life. And I identified some things that I knew I needed to change for the better and on this whole 30 journey, I made it a part of it... and I have struggled, but am doing better.... And I am so much happier and healthier this way. I really credit the whole 30 for helping this 30 something year old dog learn a new trick or two about life and being okay with who I am.... I am excited to say that my BFF of 25 plus years decided to take the plunge into the Whole 30 yesterday... I don't know if she has gotten onto the boards yet, but she is so excited... I am going over to her place this Sunday to share some recipes and make some mayo... I am so excited for her and she is very excited and totally committed to feeling better and being healthier!!!! cookin'mama
shannonmommy, thanks for the creamer tip. I will have to check that out. Jenn1270, I am sorry for your loss. Even if it was time for the friendship to end, it is a loss. Congrats on not reaching for comfort food. I do think that not having the urge to reach for food, as opposed to having to fight the urge is a huge step. Super Bowl went really well. What a great game! I did not mind drinking sparkling water throughout the game, but I must admit that I missed having a celebratory glass of champagne.
Mrs.305
Day 30! WOOHOO!!! This was my first 30 and it has been an eye-opening (and sometimes trying) experience. My husband said I was his new hero! LOL After re-reading the "strategies for success", I understand that whole 30 isn't meant for every day. I plan to stick to most of it - especially the no-added sugar aspect - and keep non-compliant 'treats' (like chocolate or my favorite cheese plate) for special occasions. The most positive thing about my 30 was getting my family embracing some of the changes I have made, or at least become more aware how much whole food vs. processed they consume. Grains/pastas/starches have been eliminated from most meals. Some non-scale victories: Inflammation issues/pain gone Reflux has been non-existent Energy levels remain constant all day Hormonal issues I had prior to new year are much better this month No rumbly/bloated tummy Lettuce wraps are my new best friend...no bun or taco shell needed! Don't need sugar in my coffee anymore I'm a much better cook With MORE snow predicted this week in the Northeast, I'm really looking forward to enjoying that glass of wine by the fire! Cheers everyone!

Don't need sugar in my coffee anymore I'm a much better cook With MORE snow predicted this week in the Northeast, I'm really looking forward to enjoying that glass of wine by the fire! Cheers everyone! I've had the same benefits! I am off the GERD meds I've been taking for over a year (but I'm taking Betaine HCl with Pepsin instead). My acne has been pretty much non-existent for the last 30 days (and I stopped using my Rx acne creams at the beginning of W30), and for the first time in my life I've been waking up without an alarm. That didn't start happening until this last week. Also I think I've only farted maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 30 days The first thing I'm planning to add back is small amounts of sugar. In other words: a couple of squares of 85% dark chocolate, a little bit of maple syrup in my winter squash, non-compliant bacon and sausage. Next will be small amounts of dairy (grass fed butter, some blue cheese or goat cheese on a salad), but I'm pretty sure that's going to cause me to break out. I'd like to test it out to make sure though. I'm pretty proud of myself for making it to the last day! I wasn't sure I could do it. Congratulations to all of you!! Jenn1270
Happy day 30!!! We have 3 meals left of this go round left together!! I have noticed that my workouts are stronger, my belly bloat is less and my energy through the day is solid and consistent- no need for my "3pm protein snack"! No snacking was easier than I thought! I am continuing for another 15 but I will weigh myself tomorrow just out of curiosity and then not again until after my W45 is over :-). Congratulations to all of us for making it to day 30— 3 meals left —we've got this!!!
Chandra
Also, for those of you who aren't enjoying canned coconut milk in your coffee, I've found that homemade coconut milk tastes way better. It doesn't have that weird aftertaste, which I find difficult to explain. Making it homemade is not difficult at all with a blender and some cheesecloth. It's by far the easiest part of my Sunday food prep. I use the Paleo Mom's instructions (http://www.thepaleomom.com/2012/04/recipe-homemade-coconut-milk.html). It also has the added benefits of no guar gum or BPA, and it's significantly cheaper, especially if you've been buying the organic stuff.
SusanB.
Hi SusanB....what is PCOS and FWB? Sorry! PCOS is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome aka Stein-Leventhal syndrome. It's when insulin resistance whacks out your hormones in a particular pattern - leading to fun things like acne, body hair, horrible periods, your hair falling out, and weight gain. Typically, women with PCOS have trouble with fertility as well (not that this is something I'm concerned about personally). Keeping your insulin reactions in check is pretty important for symptom-control. FWB is food without brakes! I can't keep nuts, almond butter, or dried fruit in my house, else I'll go back to old overeating patterns.

Mrs.305
While we are talking creamers...i swear by homemade almond 'cream'. i don't miss half 'n half at all! to 1 cup of soaked almonds, i use 2 cups of water (rather than the usual 3). i used to add dates, but don't need to even do that anymore after whole30. nom nom makes the same way i do. http://nomnompaleo.com/post/84257950678/vanilla-almond-milk

amieK
Today is Day 30 for me as well. Even though I've been eating paleo-ish since the end of September, I got off track over the holidays and decided that I needed to kick it up a notch, which led me to starting my first Whole30 on January 5. I tried to post on the forum to join this thread back on January 2, when I signed up, but I wasn't allowed. Didn't dawn on my until today that I had neglected to validate my e-mail. So, here I am, late to the party, as usual.
amieK
As for results of my first Whole30 - I feel noticeably less bloated and my jeans are fitting more comfortably. But I’ve been home sick for the past 2 days and I’m feeling kind of miserable right now, so other results are difficult to pinpoint until I kick this flu bug to the curb. I'm actually going to do a Whole40, which takes me to February 13. Then I plan to celebrate on Valentine's Day with a glass of wine and some SWYPO crepes!! On February 15, I'm taking what I've learned from my first W30(40) and starting another one. I'm still experiencing acid reflux and some IBS symptoms. These symptoms got better the first couple of weeks of my W30 but the past couple of weeks they've been a little worse than they were pre-W30. So, to heal my leaky gut issues, I'm going to tweak my 2nd W30 by sticking to low FODMAPS vegetables & fruits and incorporating elements of the autoimmune protocol - no nightshades, no nuts, no coffee. I'm not ready to give up the convenience of eggs just quite yet, but I'm not ruling it out for a future W30, full-on AIP.
