Congrats on being at (or nearing) the end of our first week, everyone! Wanted to share a small victory and ask a question... Last night my whole family ordered pizza from my favorite pizza place. Determined not to cheat, but not underestimating the power of pizza, I decided to make my favorite W30 dinner (coconut chicken and sweet potato "fries"). I felt hopeful, responsible and awesome about it...until I burned everything! Suppressing urges to cry/throw everyone's pizza across the room, I resorted to locking myself in my room for the night. Over all, a pretty successful pity party. But I didn't cheat and I'm proud of myself! It was definitely a challenge.

My question is...what are you guys keeping around for "emergency" food (for emergencies such as being surrounded by pizza with nothing but burnt chicken to hold you down)?

Day 7 - yea!  First week just about over!

I've had a few things I'm pleased about this week ...

(1) Managing a crappy cold with NO cold medicine.

(2) Got called into work yesterday just after breakfast.  Threw my prepared lunch into a cooler just in case the case ran long.  Finish around 3 pm, opened my lunch ... only to find I grabbed the wrong container.  It was my prepped raw onion/pepper mix.  Had to drive 1 hour home ... hungry, tired, sick.  Just wanted to hit the sofa with cold medicine and carbs!!  But I didn't ... that was big victory for me!

(3)  Invited to lunch.  Asked my girlfriend if we could do something non-food related while I do Whole30.  Massage and coffee instead!!  Don't feel "safe" eating out during this time.  It's only 30 days ... and there are other ways to have fun (so I keep telling myself!!!)

(4) And ... basement flooding with all the rain we are having.  Have to get up every couple of hours at night to empty bucket (as hubby and kids are on vacation).  UGH!  Stress and frustration!

So ... I'm hoping next week will bring no more cold, no more flood, no more on-call ... plus stretch off of work.  Should feel like a piece of cake :-)

NazzB, how utterly frustrating! I am working so hard at this that I would be completely devastated if I had to start over again so I'm in complete awe of you and your attitude! I'm going to remember this the next time I'm feeling a little weak.

Miskatie86, you rock! Even though the night didn't turn out like you planned, you persevered and today is another day. I don't have any suggestions for you for ER food but am looking forward to hearing from those who do.

One week completed! My headaches haven't subsided yet but that may be attributed to my head congestion that has been going on for months. Seeing ENT specialist this week but also wanted to see if foods were contributing to the problem.

Ps, made mayo the slow way yesterday and it is perfection! Next time will try the speedy gonzalez way!

That's a great victory!!  I so "get" your frustration ... what a bummer ... but good for you!

I've been preparing protein ahead ... cooked and ready.  Veggies prepped but cook fresh each day (after a day, I don't like left-over veggies).  I haven't found an emergency food yet.  I'm planning to make some recipes later this week when I have time off.  I hope you get some good ideas from the group!

I'm still eating the chili (froze a couple of containers for later).  Chili goes so well over any veggies ... hot or cold... in my opinion!  Guess that's been my go-to easy meal this week.  I'm going to make crockpot meatballs for sure, but need to check out some other stuff too.  Looking for easy recipes that I can freeze.  Want to do some fish too.  I'm on-call again today, so have to stick at home ... perfect time to check some recipes and make my shopping list.

Good luck!!

Miskatie, my emergency go to is to keep some Applegate hot dogs or lunch meat in the fridge and some frozen veggies in the freezer. That way, lunch or dinner is ready in minutes, and I don't go hungry! Just be sure to check ingredients, as some of the lunch meat has sugar. Also frozen hamburger or turkey patties that I can throw on my indoor grill work to. Again, read ingredients, some turkey patties have added stuff to them....why, I don't know, but they do. Hope that helps next time you have a food emergency!

MisKatie, my go to is always an omelette. I love them and you can pack them with SO many yummy things, especially if you regularly have meals partly prepped, I often steal from those meals to create something just for me.

My go to emergency food is hard boiled eggs and nuts which I bring to work in case I need a snack or get tied up later than expected. Also roasting a big pan of veggies and boiling eggs today to get ready for the week. I made the mayo which I am going to use to make roasted chicken and egg salad for lunch. Congrats to those on day 7 I'm on day 10! Slept better last night than the past couple of days and no longer busting out of my jeans and bra . My nose is runny though and a little congested - would have thought the sinus issues related to dairy would be cleaned up by now but then I used to eat a lot of cheese. Hope it's not a cold. I saw on the label of Woodstock organic mustard I have in the pantry that it's made with 'grain' vinegar? What is that? I know all vinegars are compliant except malt but I had not heard of that....I didn't use it.

I think the main reason for my positive outlook is because unlike in previous W30s I've done where I've been counting down the days til I'm done - this time I'm in it for the long haul. I've been to quick to 'finish' in the past and havent really paid attention to my body or my needs and 30 days hasn't been enough for me anyway so whats another week or two!? (I'm sure I'll change my tune when I get to the end of the month when it's my birthday/Australia day long weekend though.. haha). Someone on facebook also put it well to me - he said "don't start over - just add days to the end. So I'm still on day 9! Just on day 9 of 38!

Miskatie86 - eggs are definitely my go to emergency food. I also usually always have some form of leftovers in the fridge and I buy frozen veg in steam bags. It has about a cup of veg in it and you just plop it in the microwave. I sometimes heat a couple of those up and add some tuna, olive oil, salt and pepper. Not the most exciting thing but hey - it works.

Oh and nothing to do with W30 (entirely) but I have been suffering from back and shoulder issues and inflammation at night (W30 didn't fix it last time and doesn't seem to be helping this time around either) and I couldn't sleep last night due to pain. I only got 3 hours - 2 lots of 1.5hrs... having a huge brekkie full of protein and fats and about to head to work on a busy Monday. Today should be interesting... zzz

Sounds like high fives are in abundance for those of you that have battled past some temptations! Good job!

My go-to foods are almonds or almond butter (fresh ground at the store) and an apple. It's rare I don't have this with me and I use it if I can't make it to my next meal which is less frequent now. My emergency meals are eggs. They are fast to make and you can make many things from egg salad to fried eggs to a fritatta.

Today will wrap up my first week and I feel good. My workouts didn't go as planned this weekend but I know my normal schedule will be in full swing in his week.

Christine19 - I love turbo jam! Have done it for over 12 years, at home, at the gym(TKB). Turbo Fire really took it up a notch" loved that too and I've been doing body combat at 24 hour fitness lately too. Love Chalene although for some reason I haven't been as motivated to do home workouts.

This week being back to work, kids in school, activities will be a true test. I've got several things prepped: kalua pork, mayo for egg and tuna salad, salads and raw veggie bags.

There was some ground lamb on sale so I am making moroccan lamb meatballs and a pesto spaghetti squash casserole. Will let you know how those turn out.

Wholechristina - pretty sure the Kalua pork (nom, nom) would freeze well. I love chili too. I have been putting guac on it. Will have to try over veggies.

OMG I knew I shouldn't have bought dried figs! Bought them for a recipe later in the week but opened them and thought "I'll just have one" and have had about 20!!! Urrggghhh. Definite food without breaks. Shouldn't even be snacking on them at all.

I so wanted a little bit of dark chocolate last night but since there's no cheating on this eating plan, not even a tad, I resisted and talked myself through it. I'm so glad there is no wiggle room on these 30 days.

Have a great week everyone!

I found this raw coconut water at Whole Foods in the refrigerated section that has raw cocoa in it (those are the only two ingredients and they're organic, raw/unprocessed...I checked it out and to my knowledge it's compliant). I'm not much of a sweets person but I die for dark chocolate and that cocnut water did just the trick! The program says not to give in to sugar cravings with anything sweet (even naturally), so I had it when I wasn't craving, and it was still amazing. And it provided some much needed potassium. I can't recall the name but I'll let you know when I see it again.

Thanks to everyone for the meal tips and for sharing your successes and struggles! So encouraging! I hope everyone is taking the time to pat themselves on the back :) I'm struggling to find some non-food (or wine) rewards to celebrate small victories... But I did notice that I'm saving a lot of money by not eating out, so I'm thinking a mani/pedi is in order. @WholeChristina I love the idea of getting a massage and coffee! How are you guys doing with treating yourselves?

I.... I am not treating myself I guess. The other day I drank a glass of water and lemon in one of our fancy wine glasses just to make it feel a bit nicer and my hubby thought it was funny  :P

Someone randomly followed my blog today that I have not posted in since 2013. It was a journal of my SECOND W30 which I "failed" after day 12 but reading through it I had always failed because even though I was making huge changes, I wasn't overly compliant. Reading over it makes me realise how far I've come and how much of a learning curve this is.

Day 8.  Not much to report :-)

Feeling some low energy today, but that may be related to getting through a cold.  Still eating the same mix of meats I prepped last week ... changing it up as much as I can with veggies and spices.  Looking forward to Thursday to prep some new meals/flavors.

Hope everyone had a good start to the week!

Day 11 is done which according to the timeline is the last bad day :) Hope so! Was completely prepared for lunch but then the fastest thing I could make for dinner was a piece of flounder because I had no leftovers! But some treats arrived and more on the way! I ordered a box of those whole30 RX protein bars which were on my doorstep and my meals from pre-made Paleo are due to arrive Thursday. Those meals are a godsend during the week as I just stick my head in the freezer, decide what I want and then put it in a pot of boiling water. I highly recommend the meals and if you haven't ordered before, all the information is in the 'emergency food for your January whole30' section on this website. I'm tired of all the chopping and cooking so I need a little break for some meals. I worked out and really was looking forward to it after work and I feel my energy gets better every day.

Day 10 and I checked the timeline (thank you, Christine19, for the reminder) and two more days until tiger blood! I came to the Whole30 not eating processed food and generally a healthy diet so I'm hoping for some change in a few days but if not, that's okay as long as I get some relief from my head congestion and achy joints and release from my sweet tooth. I have to say I'm getting tired of so much meat.... I haven't eaten red meat in over 20 years and eat a fair number of vegetarian meals so this has been quite the trip. I actually bought pork from our local healthy food store. Had it for one meal and the rest is in the freezer. I can't say whether it will make another appearance on my dinner plate.

Congrats to everyone for sticking with it!

Day 11 for me, feeling good, but not significantly different...yet. (!??!)  I am travelling for business/pleasure from Thursday through Monday, and will try my best to stay compliant.  I will take snacks so the hunger beast doesn't overwhelm, but will be relying on restaurants for most of my meals.  I will make careful choices, ask for modifications, etc., but won't beat myself up if I slip... as long as I don't fall, I will consider it a victory.

I, too, am eating more meat than I traditionally do. I am trying to build a plate of vegetables with good fats and meat as a substantial garnish rather than have the meal focused on the protein.  Some days that works better than others.  :)

Wow... yesterday, day 10, I truly experienced what KILL ALL THE THINGS really means. No, I didn't kill anyone. But my husband had to try and soothe me like a baby because I was so wound up and told the cat to get fucked and yelled at TV characters like they were real people (I'm watching Dexter - and for anyone who's seen it, I was swearing at Lieutenant Laguerta calling her a stupid b*tch and getting really worked up at how much of a cow she was being  So funny. I just could NOT relax/de-anger myself.

It was weird as well because I was feeling relatively Zen for most of the day then it all just hit me like a truck at once later in the afternoon.

Feeling much better today.

Day 9 is almost done.  Dinner in the oven.

Felt a bit better today.  Workout started very sluggish, but energy picked up as I went along.  Maybe this is start of the turning point?!?!?

Prepped lists to make crockpot meatballs, zucchini soup and salsa on Thursday/Friday.  Can't wait to try something new!

On a happy note ... my jeans that got too tight over holidays fit fine now ... woot woot!

Sounds like everyone is doing great.  Love reading the posts!

So proud of everyone! I got home late and still worked out and cooked pork chops too but didn't eat until after 8. Need to plan better to have leftovers for dinner.

Jalopy - do you eat fish? I keep a bag of cooked shrimp in the freezer and I'm running it under cold water so I can just season and sauté real quick and have with a salad for lunch. Also my local organic store also has this 4oz frozen wild salmon that I keep 5-6 in the freezer always. I can defrost it in a bowl of water while I work out and then put it in pan or toaster and it's done in 15 minutes.

WholeChristina - congrats on the jeans! How you making those meatballs?!
