January 5th

Hi!  I just started my first Whole30 on Jan 5, so I would love to join your group!  I started mostly to "clean it up" after the holidays.  But I also know I have big problems with food--I exercise a ton, and still gained 5 lbs over Christmas.  I know it all relates to a poor diet.  I have some neighbors on board, so that's good motivation.  Happy to follow here too.

SO day 4--I am tired (seems like everyone else is too!).  It could be a product of too little sleep (hubby has stuffed up sinuses and he is snoring so loud it wakes me up!), getting back to work after a 2 week vacation, along with cutting caffeine.  I don't like black coffee (mine is usually loaded with stevia and cream) so I just don't drink any at all.  The biggest changes I have made--water consumption (I used to drink little or no water all day!) and cutting out alcohol (could be the 5 lbs right there!).

I travel extensively for work, and return back to my crazy schedule next week.  If anyone has any eating out options, I'll gladly take them!  I forsee a few trips to Whole Foods on my next trip...

My issue with going to Germany while still on the program is that it would be difficult to eat all three meals a day in a restaurant.  I find it so much easier to cook at home while complying with all the rules. Not speaking the language, I think it would be difficult to question if the bacon was cured with sugar or if there is butter or wheat in a dish three times a day.  I love food and one of the joys of visiting a different country is trying the local cuisine.

runlikeagirl, have you tried canned coconut milk in your coffee?  It is a good fat and adds a bit of sweetness, too.  I like it as much as cream.

I need to get better about exercise.  I know it is only week one and probably as I start to feel better I will feel more motivated.  I did go to yoga this morning but the planned walk after class got cancelled due to it being 4 degrees outside with a windchill factor of -20 degrees. I want to increase my fitness level but do not want frostbite doing it.

Today was a busy day for me and I had a meeting run over, which meant I had to come home hungry and make dinner.  It  made  me  realize that I need to cook and freeze a few compliant meals so I have an option if circumstances make it difficult to cook.

Another day done. Still super tired but made a huge roast vegetable salad with salami (made by a friend, 100% compliant) and pecans which was great. Thought I was getting a bit hungry earlier this morning, so had lunch early. Realised I'd probably not had enough fat in the previous 2 or 3 meals so went down to the supermarket and stocked up on nuts. Didn't end up eating them as a glass of sparkling water seemed to do the trick.

I'm interested to see how the next couple of days go with it being the weekend and out of the set routine of the working week.

I'm also concerned with how I'll go over the weekend! I plan to keep myself busy so I'm not thinking about my usual weekend treats... Although I have a BBQ to attend tomorrow, but risk mitigation strategies are already in place for that.

Which reminds me, I had no idea bacon has sugar in it!! I'm devastated  :o ! (No I haven't broken my Whole30 without knowing it... But I was close!)

There's no chance I have a specialist supplier where I live to provide sugarless, bacon. And I've been told by a friend that she's already checked the supermarkets and all bacon products are non-Whole30 (that she could find)... So I've talked with some friends about making our own from pork belly. It's still in the planning phase, but it'll probably be put into action this weekend. Kind of excited about it  :D

End of Day 5 for me... 1/6th complete!

Beljade82, I live in the United States and try to buy local products as much as possible but even my local farm uses sugar to process their bacon.  I was able to find some processed in Vermont at a speciality market, however, which is compliant because they use apple juice instead of sugar.  A ten ounce package set me back a small fortune, however, so it will not be a staple.  It is frustrating!

Day 5 VENT!  Be aware.....ok, I HAVE read the timeline so I know...I know...but still, today I am feeling like, "Is this really for me?"  I feel worse than ever, I don't sleep well, I'm bloated, cranky, I don't really crave anything in particular, actually, I'm not hungry so forcing myself to eat.  I AM following this W30 to a tee....no cheats, nothing!!!!  and I do believe in it, if all the testimonials are to be believed,,,,LOL,,,but today, today I am hoping upon hope, that one day, I will be one of those people who shout out!!!  "I feel so GOOD!"  cus right now, I don't see it....it's just gotta be a faith driven process at this point.

BTW, I didn't think I came into this eating too awfully poorly since I have been gluten free for ages, and ate little dairy and sugar, but I am dealing with low adrenals...so maybe that is the problem or maybe, it's just the detox thing...or maybe, it's because its; been frigidly cold and cloudy for day!!!! or maybe...or maybe....the moon is in Jupiter and I'm on Mars...who knows.!

Don't worry folks, I'm in this for the whole 30 days regardless....

Hang in there kbingy, everything will turn out ok. I'm glad my colleagues know I'm doing a Whole30 and they may jokes about me, when I'm a bit cranky.

I' m glad we have a local butcher who has compliant meat and bacon. He even warned me that I might find the bacon very salt, since there is no sugar on it.

I'm glad it is weekend, so I can sleep a bit longer and just be lazy. Maybe some walking in the beach if it is dry.

Just dinner, than day 5 is done.

Hang in there!!!!!!  you got this.  I think the only reason i am noticing a difference in my sleep this early is bc i want to notice it.  if that makes any sense at all.  my increased water intake has a lot to do with that too.  I am completely jealouse of anyone who has a local butcher with bacon.  I miss it dearly, but will not pay the cost and shipping to have it.  I am very happy to see this little group here supporting each other.. we got this!

I found bacon at the grocery store--Gwaltney No sugar added bacon.  Yum.

I am still tired today.  I tried unsweetened almond milk in my coffee on day one and i didn't like it.  Is there a difference in the canned coconut milk and the kind in a box?  I was so disappointed, because I was looking forward to some hot tea yesterday afternoon. It was raspberry herbal tea.  The ingredients say: (exactly like this) hibiscus, rose hips, apples, elderberries, natural and artificial raspberry flavors (wheat) GLUTEN FREE.  I am assuming because of the "wheat" (even though it is in parentheses) its not compliant?  Better safe than sorry?

Yes I am a wimp, but it is COLD here in Florida (I know the northerners will chime in!).  I usually have some coffee or tea in the afternoon to warm me up, no such luck until I can find some at the store.  :/  The herbal fruit tea has just the right amount of sweetness for me.

ALso feeling a cold coming along...maybe the holiday toxins leaving my system?

My son's 6th birthday is Sunday...bummed that I can't have cake (you cant have your cake and eat it too!), but he wont really even notice.  Also wondering how no wine on the weekend will go!!!

Hi Rachel,

welcome aboard! Good for you, a Whole30 and great to see your son is following you. They always say that children follow what you do, not what you say and he is a perfect example.

Only dinner ahead of me. My husband is making meatballs (the only thing he cooks, but they are great) we have spinach to go with it. It's my favorite vegetable so I'm looking forward to dinner.

The Shepards Pie I made last night and had for lunch was great. Especially since its raining and cold here

I would like that recipe too unless it's in one of the cookbooks?  I saw it in Well Fed I think, or was it Practical Paleo?  Even the brain isn't really going yet. LOL

AS you all know, I was kinda having a pity party today and so my husband finally said, in complete exasperation, "I am doing everything I can to PLEASE you today!" but in my evil mind, I thought, "Have you tried not breathing?"  Geez.....I haven't been this cranky since the ol' PMS days...oh well, I went on a little ski, in spite of 0 degree weather....did you hear that runlikeagirl? and now feel better, coming into the cabin with chooclate chili simmering and a fire going, and reading through the posts....yup....I can do this.!

BTW,,,,I had NO idea bacon had sugar in it till W30.  WHAT a bummer....now looking for it at my local coop.  I can't imagine spending a small fortune, but if its in reason, ie, all natural organic local meat, I'll part with the dollars.

Looking forward to day 6......and 7.....and so on and so forth.

runlikeagirl, the coconut milk in a can is very rich.  It even has a layer of "cream" on top.  I think it is the closest thing to cream for coffee.

I am having friends over to watch a football game tomorrow.  I spent a lot of time in the kitchen today.  I am serving both whole 30 compliant foods and other things.  I realized today while grating cheese for the cornbread what an unconscious eater I am.  It took a lot of focus not to take a bite of cheese or taste the blue cheese dressing I made for the paleo buffalo chicken wings.  I also made a paleo chili that I think everyone will like.

Hi all,

The Shepards Pie is in the Well Fed cookbook or maybe on the website http://theclothesmakethegirl.com/recipes-index/ which is a great website with lots of great recipes.

I'm going to make the Rogan Josh from it this afternoon.

Recipe for the Shepards Pie will follow later today. I' m going to look it up in the book.

The last 2 years I serve on birthday parties mostly things that are Paleo or Whole30 approved. Everyone likes it and nobody notices that they are eating different than normal. I serve bread for people who want it, but I eat my salads from a plate, without the bread. Lots of raw vegetables with garlic-mayonnaise. And frittata! Everyone loves fritata and you can make it in a lot of different styles and flavours, also very handy as a quick breakfast or PWO snack.

Let's start day 6

Shepards Pie:

1 medium onion, diced

2 carrots, diced

2 cloves of garlic, minced

2 pounds of ground lam or beef

1 table spoon tomato paste

1 cup beef or chicken broth,

1 teaspoon Rosemary

1/2 teaspoon Thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

Fry the vegetables in coconut oil, until tender, ad the beef and fry until brown

Ad the tomato paste , broth, and herbs, stirr and bring to a boil, let it boil until most of the liquid has evaporated. 15 min or so. Taste it and season until it is to your liking.

Spread the mixture into a baking dish and cover it with pureed cauliflower.

Sprinkle with paprika powder and set in the oven for about 30 minutes, until bubbly and golden brown.

Eat it right away or let it cool and store in containers for an easy breakfast or lunch.

Remember, it is in the Well Fed cookbook, page 97 and the book is packed with great recipes! Worth buying.

Kbingy, I don't feel great either... Day 3 was particularly bad, but things have been slowly geting better. My biggest daily struggle is that it appears my taste buds are rebelling against me!! I make foods which, on appearances, look delicious. But my taste buds tell me it taste like cardboard and subsequently I loose my appetite. Some meals I really have to force myself to eat!

But I figure it's all a part of the process.

Fortunately, my energy levels are picking up and I'm learning to be more creative with my meals... still not really enjoying eating like I used to though.

I have made that Shepherd's pie and it is great. I have both the Well Fed books and love them.  If you have Whole 30 compliant bacon, there is another great shepherd's pie recipe at http://elanaspantry.com/paleo-shepherds-pie/

I hope everyone is feeling better today.  I still am stunned by the adjustment, given the fact that, although I did majorly fall off the wagon over the holidays, I am a pretty clean eater.  I thought that being able to have a cup of tea or coffee each day would make this a piece of cake easy. <_<

One week under the belt. Slept for 6 hours straight, no wake ups! Yeah. Feeling slightly better. Still achy though. I keep wondering if there is something I'm eating that is causing inflammation? I don't like fruit so not overeating that. Not snacking on nuts. Will be interesting to see if this continues the whole 30. Usually, as long as I'm gluten free, my arthritis doesn'tflare up like this. Mmmmm

I LOVE the week fed cookbooks. I have that shepards pie on my menu coming up. I also made that Rogan Josh. It's delicious!,

Today's daily said to look back at your first week and recommit to your goals and to make any corrections. I think I have followed the eating plan really well except once when I grazed rather than doing three meals and it left me feeling weird and when I reached for that Lara bar one night when I wasn't hungry but wanted something, anything,,,,so it's a good way to learn about eating and your own body and mind.

We did it! On to the next week. It'll be fun to see the changes coming our way. Rock on!

Yes! Day 7. One week and all my goals still in good shape. No caffeine, 2ltrs of water, no weight meisurememts and 3 times to the gym.

Even though the gym was yoga and bodybalance, I feel it in a lot of muscles I didn't use enough lately :)

I managed to eat differently than during the week and even to eat three meals, which is always a bit of a problem around here in the weekend. No structure, makes meals easy skipped, especially lunch. But today I had three, wellbalanced meals, so I'm making progress there.

I made a new batch of Shepards Pie and the Rogan Josh from the Well Fed cookbook. I can't wait to eat it, just have to make cauliflower purée to go with the Rogan Josh.

Only 21 days to go. It'll only get better.

I realized today that stress plays a very big part in my eating habits. I very nearly threw in the Whole30-towel today :( . A combination of sleep deprivation and crazy busy work - suddenly my stress levels elevated and I just needed chocolate... bread... fried food... anything!!!

I can see how my diet pre-Whole30 was so inconsistent. I was eating mainly good, nutritious foods, but sabotaging it too often. I don't think 30 days will be long enough for me!!

Wow, the end of day 9. Things here are still going really well. The weekend wasn't as much of a struggle as I thought they could be. I even managed a trip to the movies with 5 others and was able to pass on their popcorn. I feel like I'm breaking the bad habits around eating. I'm also starting to notice a bit more energy and will perhaps start doing regular exercise this week (I've done nothing for a very long time now). Hope everyone else is doing ok.
