slsals
I am am starting a vegetarian/pescatarian whole50 on January 1. I am mostly a vegetarian, with occasional fish, so I follow the traditional meal plan. This will be my 3rd whole 30 (completed one in June and a second in a August). Since finishing round 2, I have been eating mostly paleo, with occasional wine and deserts. However, I have been on vacation the last 3 weeks and have definately been eating differently. New this time is that my husband will be joining me and I hope to continue for 50 days. Would love to hear of anyone else starting a similar plan in the new year. overyonder
Hi slsals! I am also a doing a pescatarian whole30, starting today (Jan. 2). I was a vegetarian/vegan for over 10 years before I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis last August and found that I couldn't tolerate many of my favorite protein sources any longer. So I looked into eating fish again and stumbled upon the Whole30 to heal my gut. This will be my second Whole30, and I may extend it depending on how I feel. I've really gone off the rail this holiday season. I don't want to know how many boxes of gluten free cookies and candies I've eaten. But I'm so excited to get back on track! I felt absolutely amazing last time. This whole30 I am allowing myself to add in tempeh as a protein source. I'm trying not to feel too guilty about it! Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 2, 2015 Administrators Share Posted January 2, 2015 Hi overyonder, Congrats on coming back to Whole30. The general recommendation is that if you can eat animal sources of protein then you stay away from the vegetarian protocol. You will get the best and most healing results following the original protocol, the veggie version is for folks who do not eat animal protein at all. Can you leave the tempeh behind for 30 days? overyonder
You're totally right ladyshanny. I know that it is frowned upon to blur lines. Maybe I will reconsider adding tempeh. I had a few different frames of thought when I considered adding tempeh this time. 1.) I think it's hard for someone who has been omnivorous to understand the emotional toll that goes into eating animals after not doing it for so long (for me it was over a decade). Being vegetarian/vegan becomes part of your identity, not just a choice you make on a daily basis. Much like I imagine some people feel the paleo lifestyle is a broader life choice that effects many aspects of your life, not just the kitchen. So eating seafood several times a day for me turns into not only being a financial stretch, but also an emotional one. I feel guilty. It's something I'm working on, and I know it's hard for people (especially the meat loving paleo crowd) to relate to. 2.) I also could say I was doing the vegetarian whole30 meal plan and nobody would mention "the rules". But I can't eat dairy, tofu and most legumes. And I know that the normal meal plan has way better health benefits than the vegetarian one. So I'm stuck in this line of thinking where I already feel Whole30 as a pescatarian is restrictive enough...but the vegetarian template is not applicable to my personal health needs. 3.) It's crazy tasty and really easy to cook, store, and transport. Thank you for making me think about this a bit more. I'm now leaning towards no tempeh... Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 2, 2015 Administrators Share Posted January 2, 2015 Hey, all we can ask is that you give it some thought and then ultimately the choice is yours for whatever reasons you may have. If it helps at all, I was a vegetarian for 10 years and a vegan for 2. That was about 15 years ago and probably what I can suggest is that humans were designed to eat protein from animals (yes, I know that some people believe differently) and finding the best and most humanely raised meat that you can goes a long ways into easing that guilt. overyonder
It does help, thanks. I know that my mind frame will slowly change. I was vegan for around 6 years and was convinced that I would never ever ever touch animal products again. Yet here I am shaking my head at the disgusting processed vegan junk food that was once a staple!
overyonder
How's it going slsals? I noticed that this time around (this is my second Whole30) my "hangover/kill all the things/ etc." symptoms are not as noticeable as last time. Do you find things easier your third time around? slsals
Overyonder, so far this has been my easiest whole 30, with much less dramatic symptoms. My husband has also been doing it with me this time around, so that may be helping as well. What have you decided about adding fish and other animal products to your diet? I am mostly vegetarian for breakfast and lunch and I eat fish for dinner when I am cooking for my husband and I. Personally that works great, when my husband is not around I am mostly vegetarian and I will add some canned tuna or smacked salmon to a meal every few days if I feel I need it. I do make sure to eat plenty of fats with vegetarian meals. The other day I made whole 30 "hand rolls. I rolled smoked salmon, avocado and cucumber strips in Nori. It was delicious and might be a good way to transition back to seafood. Make sure the smoked salmon has no sugar. Also, if you put some thinly sliced cucumber between the salmon and the Nori it prevents it from getting soggy, also have been doing soups the round (new for me). So far have done chestnut, curry butter it squash and tomato. They are all vegetarian. Happy to share any of the recipes if you want. What day are you on? I am on Day
overyonder
I'm glad you are having an easier time of it as well! I hope things just keep getting easier every time. In the future I want to try to have a week of every month be Whole30...a Whole7 once a month I guess? I decided to just follow the 'original' template and keep my protein to eggs and seafood. It's been easy so far. Tuna and smoked salmon are life savors for me! I use either of them for my lunch protein at work almost every day of the week. Those hand rolls sound delicious! I might have to put them on the menu this weekend. I love all of the new foods I've been exploring. My last Whole30 I discovered parsnips and spaghetti squash. Yesterday I picked up some plantains for the first time and made 'tostones,' SO GOOD. Finding new foods to cook has been an unexpended delight out of this whole process. I'm at the end Day 11 right now. My energy levels are starting to surge, finally. Days 8/9 were the only days where my energy levels were horrid-but I also started my period (that had been missing for 4 months!), so it could have been that. The main reason I am doing the diet is because I have Ulcerative Colitis, and all of the holiday treats were really flaring up my symptoms. I won't go into detail, but as of DAY 6 the symptoms have totally gone away. So I am a happy camper How is your energy? Noticed any improvements in your life so far? imacdavid
Hi, everyone. I'm a newbie on Day 2 and came to this thread via the search word "vegan"... which is what I mostly am. I *will* eat salmon on occasion, and on Whole30, I suspect I'll be eating a lot more salmon as well as tuna. No way will I go back to eating meat or fowl. The hardest part of this program for me is going to be finding suitable protein sources since tofu, rice & beans, tempeh are all out. I need to spend time exploring but did just wanted to put my foot in the forum door. I'll probably be asking more questions down the line. I immediately identified with everything "overyonder" said. And, yes, on Day 2 I'm already feeling all of days 1-10 rolled into one.
