Meal Template; Suggestion, or Required?

I recently posted a picture of a meal I was having for Whole30, just two boiled eggs and a banana. A lot of people were wondering if this meal followed the rules, because there was no fat or vegetables. I normally eat two big meals with fat, vegetables, and protein, then a small meal with protein and fruit. This is my second Whole30, and I ate this way last time and never had a problem before. I know on the template it suggests focusing each meal around protein, but is it actually a suggestion, or is it required?

Following the meal template is a recommendation and not a rule. You can technically complete a Whole30 not following the meal template, but why would you? The meal template describes best practices for human eating.

The Whole30 is not a time for you to practice your best ideas about how to eat or what you are used to doing. The Whole30 is a time to practice an approach that has been worked out by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig and validated by tens of thousands of people who have followed best practices according to their guidance.

Ok, I see what you are saying. But I think I disagree. I feel like Whole30 is the time to practice the best individual way to eat, while following the guidelines set out by the Hartwigs. Maybe that's just me being stubborn, but I don't believe in subscribing to specific meal templates. I love Whole30, and am a huge advocate for it, but if I am going to be rexpected to eat a specific quota for each meal, then what's the point of finding freedom in food?

You can still have freedom in food.  As Tom said, the meal template is a recommendation for best results, not a requirement. The recommendation stems from results from people who've done Whole30's in the past and what's helped them get the best outcome. From a hormonal balance perspective, having meals that meet this template are more likely to satiate you for 4-5 hours, which is also another best practice recommendation on the Whole30.

Ultimately, it's your choice whether or not to use the template for each meal. As long as you meet the program rules, you're doing a Whole30.

It sounds to me like these meals work best for you so you don't need to do a whole30. As the saying goes "If it ain't broke don't fix it". If you feel amazing eating the way you do then keep riding your own bike and don't do the whole30 challenge. Happy New Year!

I agree and disagree, Ashton. The Whole30 as it's written with the rules and the recommendations is the way to figure out exactly how your body responds to food, both mentally and physically. Once your Whole30 is over, starting to figure out exactly what works for you and how is the way to go.

Your fruit and protein small meal is totally within the rules, just not the recommendations. What about trying to follow the recommendations for the 30 days and then test in your small fruit/protein meals? It's possible that while you feel fine now as you are doing it, you could feel even better? Without testing it, you wouldn't know if those small meals were contributing to your sugar dragon staying alive or contributing to a mid afternoon slump that you don't notice until it's gone?

Just a suggestion, as Chris says, you are still doing a Whole30 per the rules.
