cewdressage
I started my 3rd Whole30 yesterday! My 2nd Whole30 was not all that great... while I was compliant food-wise, I was under an extremely unhealthy amount of stress (full university course load plus 2 jobs), I didn't exercise, and I hardly slept. This definitely negated many of the positive impacts of the Whole30. In fact, I vividly remember one of my lab instructors telling me one night "you look dead inside". SO this time around I have got a whole new attitude! While I am taking a full course load, I am not working... it's just not worth it! I also plan on walking (or snowshoeing!) to school every morning, which is about a 40 min walk. In addition, I plan to get in at least 3 runs per week. And sleep is a priority! I've never done a log before, but I thought I would give it a shot. I really struggle with eating out of boredom or stress and the sugar dragon is real y'all! So, here we go! Side note: Newfie = Newfoundlander. I'm not *really* a Newfie, but it's where I live at the moment, so I'll go with it.
cewdressage
Alright so I'm not going to log day 1. So here is what I have eaten for day 2! Meal 1: 3 fried eggs 2 cups of sauted broccoli slaw Snack before run: banana Ran 3 miles... felt pretty darn tired/hungry towards the end. I know a banana was not the best pre-run snack, but I have not yet been able to figure out anything else that works for my stomach. Meal 2: 3 fried eggs 1 baked sweet potato slathered in coconut oil 1 cup broccoli slaw Had some carrots w/ homemade mayo and 1/2 a handful of grapes waiting for dinner to cook. So hungry! Meal 3: PaleOMG's Date and Shallot Rosemary Chicken (yum!) roasted baby carrots broccoli slaw Overall, I feel fine. I wanted to snack this afternoon out of boredom, but I didn't. Need to stay strong through the evening munchies...
cewdressage
Forgot to post yesterday... Day 3 Meals Meal 1: 3 fried eggs (yeah, I eat a lot of those) steamed mixed veggies w/ creamy cilantro sauce (mayo-based) Meal 2: Leftovers-- chicken, carrots apple Meal 3: 2 slices of sweet potato and caramelized onion frittata small salad apple Started to feel a bit hungry later, so I had a handful of cashews, then just tried to ignore it. At 11pm my stomach was groooowling, so I gave in and got a snack. Instead of reaching for fruit like I normally would, I had another small slice of the frittata and a few pickles. Much better. Overall, I feel great! I'm still just trying to figure out the correct meal size to keep me from getting hungry later, as well as deciphering true hunger from just the munchies. cewdressage
Day 4 Meal 1: 2 slices of caramelized onion and sweet potato frittata steamed veggies w/ creamy cilantro sauce Meal 2: 1 1/2 cups of chicken salad (made w/ mayo, grapes, and celery) over a bed of romaine banana Snack: handful of cashews pickles Meal 3: 2 chicken pot handpies 1- 1 1/2 cups roasted curry cauliflower Classes started today, so I was up and out the door earlier than I've been used to. I can walk to school using either the sidewalk along the main roads, which is quicker, or through a lovely park along wooded trails. I always chose the trails, but today I tried the sidewalks, thinking it would be quicker since we got a bit of snow last night and the sidewalks are supposed to be plowed. No such luck... the sidewalks were piled high with snow from the road plows, so I bailed halfway and trudged through the wet snow on the trails. It took me nearly an hour to get to class. Despite that, I am still happy with my decision to walk to school in the mornings. I need the exercise and it also helps to clear my head before the day begins! I'm wondering how I am going to get my runs in with this winter weather... last winter I lived on a country road that I ran on. It was usually plowed and had little traffic. Now I live in town and I just can't handle running on this busy roads with no sidewalks, ice, slush, etc... While I don't mind walking in the deeper snow on the trails, I'm not sure about running in it. I may have to give in and use the treadmills at the school gym! Nooooooo! We'll see. cewdressage
Ah... Day 5. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs 1- 1 1/2 cups leftover curry roasted cauliflower Meal 2: 1 1/2 cups chicken salad (w/ mayo, grapes, and celery) over a bed of romaine apple handful of cashews Snack: a few baby carrots dipped in mayo Meal 3: beef stew ( w/ carrots and potatoes) banana I'm doing alright today... SO tired though. I just wanted to find a place to curl up and go to sleep all day today. Briefly considered going to the gym for a run, but that is just not going to happen. My breakfast did not carry me over comfortably until lunch time, and my lunch has not carried me over until dinner. I was STARVING by the time I was able to eat lunch, and I'm sitting here starving waiting for dinner. It's ready, I just don't want to eat too early! But I think I might just give up and eat... I suppose it is nearly 5:30 and that's not too bad. Clearly, my meal sizes are not correct... or something is not right! The thing is, I eat until I'm full at each meal, so I'm not really sure what to do... perhaps it's my fat content. Now that I think about it, I haven't really been getting that much fat at each meal. Hmmm... Time to figure out a way to incorporate some more and see how that helps.
Shelley
I'm also on day 5 and I hear you about wanted to curl up and go to sleep. Actually, I did - I took a 2-hour nap this afternoon! I had every intention of going to yoga but I don't have the energy. All I want to do is eat a sweet potato and go back to bed! Sounds like you and I are feeling similar on day 5. Your food looks great! Maybe you should give it a try eating a little more and see if that helps with the hunger? Maybe more fat? Avocados, olives, etc. I'm trying to stick to the three meals a day but sometimes more is needed, so I eat. What are chicken pot handpies? Sounds like something I might like. I was hoping to get started with my running as I've signed up for a 10k in April, but like you, the weather is not really conducive to running outside right now. I don't know how some people do it. I think the treadmill is it for me for now. Not ideal, right? I AM a Newfie, although I no longer live there. What are you doing there?
cewdressage
Hello Shelley... good to see a Newfie on here! My dad and brother moved here about 8 years ago from Kentucky and I always came up to visit. I fell in love with it here, so when I decided to go back to school, I chose Memorial University! I've been here for about 1 1/2 years now studying biology and it's great. It's so beautiful here and the people are great... I'll leave it at that and not talk about the weather haha! I think you are right about the fat... I added more in today and I'm feeling better! I had a few tablespoons of coconut cream and a few nuts, the only fat source I have at the moment... I went to the grocery store and literally the only thing they had in the produce section was cauliflower, cabbage, onions, and potatoes. Sign at the grocery said the ships haven't been able to get in due to weather. So, I guess I will just have to make due with what I have on hand right now. Never been a fan of olives, but maybe I should give them another try. Hope you are starting to feel a bit better today! The hand pies are great! I made a big batch of them and stuck them in the freezer so that I could pull them out for a quick meal when needed. They cook wonderfully from frozen in the oven. Some might consider them SWYPO, but for me, they are not. I used the crust recipe from here: http://grokgrub.com/2013/12/18/paleo-chili-hand-pies/ I chilled the dough for at least 15min and dusted my hands and the surface w/ coconut flour, which really helped in making it easier to work with. I used the filling recipe from here: http://www.lifemadefull.com/?s=chicken+pot+pie (subbing coconut oil for butter). I've also used the crust recipe from lifemadefull.com to make a normal pot pie, and it was delicious. However, it was a bit harder to handle for some reason, so I opted out of using it for the hand pies. I dread running on a treadmill... being inside drives me bonkers! But the sidewalks and trails are now nothing but sheets of ice, so it looks like I will have to give in. Signing up for a race is one sure-fire way to get running though! Maybe I should do one this spring to get my butt in gear. Aaaaand here are my day 6 meals: meal 1: 3 fried eggs steamed veggies, drizzled with EVOO Snack: Knew I didn't get enough in at breakfast, but I was running late at the time, so I had to make up for it with a snack... at this point I was starving (and it was only 10am!). A few small spoonfuls of coconut cream Half a handful of cashews Banana Meal 2: Leftover beef stew banana Meal 3: 3 fried eggs curry-roasted cauliflower baked sweet potato topped with coconut oil
cewdressage
Day 7 Snowed in today. I went for an hour walk in the snow with my pup, which was lovely. Otherwise, I've been bored and trying to study all day. I've been bloated all day... I feel like I weigh 5,000 lbs and will never be able to wear jeans comfortably again. On the plus side, I remembered the guacamole that I made and froze in single-serving bags during my Whole30 prep. I'm going on a Costco run for food tomorrow... hopefully they have veggies in stock because I'm pretty much out. I had much more consistent energy today and fell asleep much more easily last night. Hopefully I will again tonight too! Meal 1: 3 fried eggs steamed veggies drizzled with olive oil banana with a bit of coconut cream Meal 2: 2 salmon cakes w/ guacamole curry roasted cauliflower Snack: apple Mostly out of boredom. Meal 3: Roast chicken breast potatoes and radishes roasted in duck fat (YUM!) small salad w/ carrots, radishes, and guacamole
Shelley
Yes, Newfoundland is a great place. I was thinking the other day how nice it would be to get a job at MUN once I finish my PhD. St. John's seems like such a nice place to live. The handpies sound great! I think it's something I might save for after the Whole 30 - thanks for sharing! You were snowed in today (we were yesterday) but today it's -24 with the windchill. I was planning to go to yoga tonight but I can't bear to go outside and clear off the car and warm it up! Wimpy, right? Lol Your food is looking good! I see that you used duck fat. I was at the grocery store a couple of days ago and they sold goose fat in a jar. I almost bought it. cewdressage
Not wimpy! it's been only -15 here and all I want to do is curl up in a ball under a blanket. So that's what I have been doing. haha Duck fat is so good! I'd always heard about it, but never tried it until I kept the fat from the duck I roasted a few weeks ago. cewdressage
Day 8 Woohoo! One week completely down. YES! Made it to the grocery today and stocked up on veggies. Slept great again last night. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs curry roasted cauliflower Snack: apple Meal 2: roast chicken breast sweet potato slathered in coconut oil curry roasted cauliflower Meal 3: 3 fried eggs roasted brussel sprouts strawberries drizzled with coconut cream
Shelley
Hmmm, I never thought about putting coconut oil on my sweet potato. I think I'll try it. I usually just smother it in homemade mayo.
cewdressage
Shelley- coconut oil is delicious on sweet potatoes! I usually add a sprinkle of cinnamon and sometimes a dash of all-spice. Yum! Day 9 Today I wanted to eat all the things. All of them. My brother's chinese, potato chips, pizza... I just wanted to eat it all. Thank goodness I didn't, but I did get a little crazy with the strawberries and coconut cream. Yikes. Ah well, I've got 21 (!!!) more days to work on it. I know I definitely need to find something better for a snack in case I feel like I need one... time to make some hardboiled eggs! I wish I could find compliant deli meat here, but no such luck. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs roasted brussel sprouts Meal 2: hamburger topped with guacamole, caramelized onions, and red peppers very small sweet potato topped w/ coconut oil roasted broccoli strawberries Snack: I was hungry... but I have no idea why since I had a good lunch. apple half handful of walnuts with a tiny bit of coconut cream Meal 3: hamburger, topped same as my lunch, but with the addition of a fried egg. Seriously one of the most delicious burgers I have ever had. roasted broccoli strawberries topped with melted coconut cream... too delicious. cewdressage
Day 10!!! 1/3 of the way through! I feel like I have the appetite of teenage boy. Today wasn't as terrible cravings-wise, but my brother's potato chips were giving me the stare down. It doesn't help that the ingredients are compliant. Hopefully he'll eat em up soon and get them out of my face! Geez, I don't usually even eat potato chips haha. It was sunny and not snowing for once (but still cold) so I finally got my butt out the door and went for a run. You know those crazy people you see out running in all conditions? I am not one of those people. It was miserable. I slipped in slush the whole way, while get splashed in slush by passing cars, and occasionally having to dive into a pile of snow to avoid snow plows. I only did 2 miles, but I guess that's better than nothing. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs roasted broccoli sweet potato slathered in coconut oil Meal 2: 2 small hamburgers topped with a fried egg, caramelized onions, and red peppers roasted broccoli strawberries drizzled with coconut cream Meal 3: indian chicken curry on a bed of sauted shredded kale, broccoli, and brussels sprouts (probably my favorite meal EVER!!!) apple
Shelley
Lol...appetite of a teenage boy. Good job on the run! Did you use a recipe for your Indian chicken curry?
cewdressage
Day 11 My appetite is still raging. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs steamed veggies covered in ranch Meal 2: 2 small hamburgers w/ guacamole, onions, and red peppers salad (the superfood mix from Costco) w/ ranch apple Meal 3: a GIANT plate of chicken curry on a bed of sauted veggies (the superfood salad mix) sweet potato slather in coconut oil I was moderately hungry most of the day and starved by the time I got home for dinner... hence the giant plate of curry haha. I seem to be getting plenty of fat now in all my meals, so tomorrow I am going to eat a bigger breakfast and try to include something starchy to see if that helps. Shelley- This is the recipe for my curry... I don't really measure things, so these measurements are approximate. Spice Mixture: 3 heaping tables of curry powder (mild or medium depending on how ya roll) 2 bay leaves 1/2 - 1 tsp each of the following: garlic powder ground coriander salt cinnamon ground cardamom 1) Dice an onion and saute it (in fat of choice) until translucent. 2) Add another tbls of fat (maybe 2) to onions, then toss in the spice mixture, stirring around until it coats the onions and soaks up the fat (pan will look dry). Cook for a few minutes, stirring constantly. 3) Add 3-4 chicken breasts, chopped in bite-size pieces, followed by one can of coconut milk, and 2 tbls tomato paste (no worries if you don't have it). Mix it all up and then cover it and let it simmer for at least 30-45 min, stirring occasionally. The sauce will thin as it cooks. Sometimes at the very end, I will take the lid off and allow it to simmer until the sauce thickens up, other times I add a bit of arrowroot powder (pre-mixed with some of the sauce), and yet other times it ends up just perfect. Sometimes I add a dash or two of cayenne pepper at the very end of simmering for a little extra kick.

cewdressage
Day 12 Man, I am tired! Labs have started this week, and those always seem to suck the life out of me. 3 hours every afternoon measuring tiny things, looking through microscopes at tiny things, making ridiculously accurate drawings of things (not all tiny)... not sure what it is exactly, but they get me. Overall though, I am feeling good. Cravings have weakened. I didn't snack once yesterday! And it's looking like another snack-free day today! Today was the first day where I didn't feel starved between meals. Oh, and can I talked about sleep for a minute? It has been SO fantastic. I have not slept this good in a LONG time. I fall asleep easily, and I wake up... well waking up always sucks a little when it's still dark, but it's not as bad as it once was. Hooray! Still need to figure out when to get some more exercise in, but at least I am walking to school every day. It took me an hour to get there today, fighting the wind and snow, but I just see that as the chance for a little bit more exercise than normal. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs roasted broccoli roasted sweet potato cubes Meal 2: 2 salmon cakes roasted broccoli roasted sweet potato cubes apple Meal 3: Nom Nom Paleo's Kalua Pig (minus the bacon)... SO GOOD!!! roasted brussel sprouts and red potatoes caramelized onions and peppers apple Now, I believe it's time for a cup of Stash's Organic Chocolate Orange herbal tea and pajamas. cewdressage
Day 13 Almost halfway there! Yesssss. Feeling good today... I got in a run!!! An enjoyable one. This morning on my walk to school, I discovered the trails had been groomed and were perfect for running. I got in 3 enjoyable miles with the sun shining. I believe I will stick with 3 miles for a while... it's crazy how much fitness I lost last semester when I sat around and did nothing but cry over my textbooks. I would really love to run another 1/2 marathon this summer though... going to work towards it. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs roasted brussel sprouts roasted sweet potatoes cubes Meal 2: leftover Kalua pig brussel sprouts roast sweet potato cubes banana Meal 3: chicken pot hand pie roasted brussel sprouts apple Wasn't that hungry for dinner (shocker!!!). Hopefully I stay full until bed, but I do have some hardboiled eggs ready just in case I get the grumbles. I'm trying to gather some ideas for veggies sides... I love my roasted veggies, but I do need to spice it up a little every once in a while.
cewdressage
Day 14 Feeling pretty good... I even woke up before my alarm today! The fact that I was in bed before 9pm last night probably had something to do with that... The only downer right now is that it seriously feels like I have gained weight. What the heck?! There are still 16 more days left though, so there is still time for that to change. Going out to dinner tomorrow night with the family... My dad first suggested going to the most amazing pizza place in St. John's ever... and my heart hurt a little to have to suggest something else. I've scoped out the menu where we are actually going and picked out a compliant meal, so I'm ready to rock day 15. Logged my steps today and I got in around 8,000 steps, which is around 3.4 miles, just doing my daily stuff. Hopefully the weather cooperates and I can get in another run tomorrow! Meal 1: 3 fried eggs steamed veggies w/ ranch roasted potatoes Meal 2: chicken pot hand pie roasted brussel sprouts banana Meal 3: steak onions and peppers sweet potatoes I'm already out of fresh veggies. I can't believe I'm out after buying a ridiculous amount only one week ago. This is insane.
Shelley
I wouldn't worry about feeling like you've gained weight. That's all part of the process. I felt like that a couple of days ago but am feeling less so today. Isn't it crazy how fast you go through the food in your fridge?!? I need to rob a bank. cewdressage
Day 15 I had a dream last night that I went to Costco and all the vegetables were sold out except for one bag of old broccoli. It was really stressful. haha Thankfully my dream did not come true and I came home with about 10lbs of veggies today (and a ridiculous amount of meat too). So, I went out to dinner tonight and I think it was successful... I had a bit of the pork belly appetizer (YUM!). Then I had a burger (no bun) with guac and caramelized onions. There was a mix up with the sides, and I ended up with fries. I had a few but I'm not all the crazy about fries. I don't if I totally broke the W30 rules and need to restart or not though... I'm 99% sure everything was technically compliant, so I would think no, but there is always the chance that something wasn't. And then there is the whole deal that it was fries. I think I'm just going to keep trucking along... I sure do hate eating out on W30 though! Didn't get a run in... the day slipped away from me. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs steamed veggies w/ ranch banana Meal 2: 3 fried eggs steamed veggies w/ ranch roast sweet potatoes
cewdressage
Day 16 Moving on from the fry experience and the fattie feelings... Had an AWESOME run today. It was a balmy +1 and the snow had been packed down and was just melty/sticky enough to be perfect for running (with my YakTraks). Got in 3.5 miles and just felt so great the whole time. Nothing like it. Meal 1: 3 fried eggs roast sweet potatoes banana Snack: hardboiled egg Meal 2: roast pork w/ peppers and onions sweet potatoes roasted superfood salad mix w/ asian orange dressing 2 tangerines Meal 3: Beef roast Balsamic and date roasted carrots roasted brussel sprouts w/ asian orange dressing Went out to a get together with friends and turned down all the brownies and chips, etc... without a problem. However, I did get hungry, so I was happy to get home and get some more food in my belly. Snack: hardboiled egg superfood salad mix w/ asian orange dressing
