Heather Hansen
Help? On Day 4 and I'm finding I'm thinking a LOT about food and what I'm going to eat and then when I'm eating, I'm eating too fast and way past satiety. I know these two things have been lifelong struggles for me, but it seems like everything is aggravated right now. I'm trying really hard to slow down and to stop before I'm full and close the kitchen after dinner (three strategies that have been super helpful in the past). Has anyone else experienced this? I tend to be an anxious person and am hoping once I'm a few more days (week?) in, I'll feel less anxious about it, and as a result won't Hoover my food. Yes? Advice? Tina R
Welcome! Take a deep breathe. Be kind with yourself it's only day 4. It takes a while for your body to adjust to this new way of eating. It might even take longer than 30 days. Do the best you can and if you are hungry eat. Hopefully as you continue to eat nutrient dense food you will eat when you are hungry and stop when you are not. Good Luck!
praxisproject
Try to eat to the template if you can, it helps to stabilise cravings. By the way, you're doing great, you've made it to day 4 already!
Moderators LadyM Posted January 5, 2015 Moderators Share Posted January 5, 2015 In retrospect, I definitely overate during my first Whole 30 and I don't think it's an uncommon phenomenon. I think our bodies are clamoring for the good stuff, so go ahead and eat. But you also must relax and let go a little. Trust the process and forgive yourself. The more you beat yourself up about it the higher your anxiety will grow. Avoid the vicious cycle. The point of Whole 30 is to step off that roller coaster! Eventually, you will become satisfied with less food when your body is ready for less food. Food is not the enemy. I do think the parameters you've set for yourself can be helpful, such as shutting down the kitchen after dinner if you have a habit rather than an actual need for food after dinner as well as slowing down and savoring your food. (Reminder: the longer the food is in your mouth the longer you taste it!) Also, why don't you post a few days' worth of food and we'll give you some feedback. If you're overdoing fruit and nuts, for example, that can feed your sugar dragon and your cravings. Doing your best to eat meat+veg+fat and getting in enough starchy veg (don't fear good carbs!) to template three times a day should be your goal. And as praxis said, that will help stabilize your moods, cravings, blood sugar. Soon you'll feel like a well-oiled machine!
Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 5, 2015 Administrators Share Posted January 5, 2015 Hi Heather, I am a fast eater too and as LadyM says above, on my first Whole30 I way overfed myself. I have some food anxiety and thinking I was not going to have "enough" and be at work or out and starving made me a bit crazy. About 14 days in I was able to calm down and actually assess the situation. One of my goals for this Whole30 is to cut back my portions a bit and find my sweet spot. I don't necessarily need to lose weight (although I have some to lose if that's what my body decides to do) but I know I'm eating too much because I'm not getting hungry between meals that are 5-6 hours apart. Heather Hansen
Thank you everyone! I really appreciate your input. LadyShanny said it best -- I worry about not having enough food. Today I focused on eating slow and stopping when I'm 80% full, which is really helpful. Food journaling typically sends me over the edge into thoughts of perfectionism, so I don't know that I want to go down that path, but thank you for the offer. I've done Whole 30-ish programs before, the only slip was the bacon fat from non-compliant bacon. I've felt incredible and eat Paleo 80% of the time as-is, so I don't know why I'm so anxious and worried about food volume. I think you all are right, it will get easier as the days go by. Thank you again for the advice.
kirkor
(Reminder: the longer the food is in your mouth the longer you taste it!) Dang. That's so simple yet it's kinda blowing my mind right now! I'm kind of a speed eater, so that just might be the mnemonic I've been needing!
Heather Hansen
Day 12 update! I'm feeling pretty dang fantastic. The anxiety is pretty much gone. Thanks again for the support!
Sarah Jane
Heather - so glad to see your update! I've struggled with anxiety (and over eating, interrelated but different) and my first Whole30 was far from perfect! I most definitely over ate, but still came out at the end feeling 100000000x better than before. I am on day 12 of Whole30 round 2 and this time is leaps and bounds different. I realize now how much my relationship with food changed during my first Whole30 and has lasted until now. Also take some time to focus on handling the anxiety away from food, i.e. mediation, yoga, de-stressing your environments (home, work, etc.) Good luck finishing out your first round!! AliElmer1
Day 12 update! I'm feeling pretty dang fantastic. The anxiety is pretty much gone. Thanks again for the support! This is great to read! I am on Day 10 and I feel the same- like am I going to have enough food? And I tend to eat fast- I am working on not eating at my desk or in front of the TV too. I feel like I overate last night- feel like I need to tell people! Ha. I made Zoodles with homemade tomato sauce and sausage. I know Whole 30 is not just about losing weight but many other things, one of them being your relationship with food. I know for me- sometimes I will over eat - like I shouldn't have had the 2nd plate last night but it was SO good. But then I felt stuffed! my first time feeling that way since I have started. Just felt bad - but I am moving on and taking that feeling, and will remember and try to slow down! Hope you are doing well!!
