Alethia
Hello! I finished reading It Starts With Food yesterday evening and am starting my own Whole30 today! I'm mostly hoping for weight loss and increased insulin sensitivity as diabetes runs in both sides of my family, but I also have chronic asthma and arthritis that I'm hoping I can get a little relief from. I figure that 30 days will pass whether I change my diet or not, so why not give it a whirl? Meal 1: leftover steak and green beans (cooked in EVOO with bacon and tomatoes) Meal 2: medium boiled eggs on top of a spinach salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes and generous EVOO/balsamic dressing Meal 3: Pork roast with leftover green beans I'm feeling not so hot. I have a wicked headache and I'm pretty tired. My roommate just walked in with a box of cupcakes and after politely declining I decided for the sake of my new way of eating and the peace of our household I should probably call it an early night. Alethia
Day 2! Meal 1: 3 medium boiled eggs and sautéed spinach (cooked in ghee and EVOO) Meal 2: Pork roast with a spinach/radicchio/tomato/mushroom/artichoke heart salad with EVOO/balsamic dressing Meal 3: Pork roast with sautéed mushrooms and onions Oof. This headache hasn't left yet and I'm even more tired than I was yesterday. I'm determined to power through it, but yowza!
Mich
Great stat Alethia, the headaches will go. I find increasing my water intake can help them a little bit.
Alethia
Day 3 August 26 The headache did in fact go away! I felt AWESOME yesterday. I woke up clearheaded and full of energy and that lasted the entire day. Here's hoping that today will be just as great!
Alethia
Day 4 August 27 I was up at 5 to get to the gym on time, but I woke up before my alarm. This has never happened to me before and I was shocked. Even more stunning, I woke up full of energy and stayed that way throughout the entire day. No crankiness, no dips in energy, nothing! I was able to fall asleep with no problems. My cravings haven't even been noticeable, I think because I'm feeling so good. I realize that it's only been 4 days, but I feel so much better it's crazy. Renee Kosowan
I was up at 5 to get to the gym on time, but I woke up before my alarm. This has never happened to me before and I was shocked. Even more stunning, I woke up full of energy and stayed that way throughout the entire day. This is exactly what I have been hoping for. I love the gym early in the morning but haven't been able to make it up yet. I set my alarm for 5am every day and when it goes off I say "ugh" roll over and go back to bed until I have to get up for work at 7am. What time are you heading to bed? Alethia
Pretty early. I'm in bed by 9:30 usually and no later than 10 ever. Sleep is one of my top priorities, and everything else gets bumped in favor of getting to bed on time. Especially housework, lol!
Renee Kosowan
I think I need to bump my bed time back from 10:30 to 9-9:30ish
djoyce
I have been getting up to do the gym thing 5-6 days a week for three years. I still don't consider myself a morning person but If I don't do it in the AM, I don't do it (kids, life and excuses get in the way later in the day). I get up between 5 and 5:30 AM every day to workout. The first month is pretty tough (maybe easier on W30) but you can teach yourself to do it. I however, mortgage my sleep all the time to prioritize for my workouts and late evening quiet time after the kids are in bed. I would love to be in bed by 10 PM but it is almost always Midnight. I have a BodyMedia monitor that tracks sleep vs. laying down time. I am averaging between 5 and 6 hours over the last week. I have always survived on less sleep well and I would not trade my established workout routine now for anything. Cheers DJ
Alethia
Renee, pushing back my bedtime was absolutely the key to sticking to my morning workouts. If I stay up later than 10, I'm physically incapable of getting out of bed when my alarm goes off at 5. I do get strange looks from people when they find out what time I go to bed, but I also get strange looks when they find out what I eat! Djoyce, I am jealous of your ability to function on 5 hours of sleep. I kid you not, I would be a zombie. Day 5 August 28 As far as today goes, another smashing success! Feeling awesome, super energy levels (that are consistent!), and even moods! I'm preparing to start grad school next Tuesday, and I've been trekking all across campus trying to get things done. I'm walking an average of 4 miles a day in addition to my weight lifting, and I'm definitely tired at the end of the day, but it's not a dead/can't function tired. I had no idea that eating correctly would make me feel so awesome. I wish that more people could put aside their blind acceptance of conventional wisdom and their horror of "NO PROCESSED FOODS?!" because even after only 5 days the difference in my temperament, energy levels, and all around outlook is amazing. I'm staring my MPH focusing on community health education and specializing in the prevention of obesity and diabetes. From the interactions I've had with professors so far, they are still very into heart healthy grains and low fat. I don't know how much change I'll be able to work on campus as a student, but watch out once I graduate! Wow. That was a little rambly. Basically, the Whole30 rocks
Derval
Really happy for you Alethia! And I totally agree sleep trumps housework! I get 8+ a night and can't imagine less...this morning I had to get up "early" at 7am cos the kids are back at school today and I was I've enjoyed by lie-ins over the Summer. I think I am still catching up on the years of broken sleep when they were younger
Alethia
Gaah. My computer bit the big one this week and until I can get to the mall to buy a new one, I'm borrowing my roommate's laptop. So this is going to have to be super quick! Day 10 Basically, I'm still feeling awesome. Excellent energy levels, even keeled appropriate moods, no troubles falling asleep or waking up: I feel incredible. I am starting to experience sugar cravings however. These are REALLY not fun and I'm doing my absolute best to keep busy so that I can try to ignore them. Wish me luck!
