Guest
I've been trying to stick to eating when I'm hungry to learn to trust my hunger signals. (I am a big emotional eater.) However, I've noticed something weird. Yesterday I had breakfast at around 9am. I had no appetite all day and felt really grumpy, down and irritable (and couldn't be bothered to eat/cook as a consequence). However, as soon as I made myself eat a meal (around 5pm) I suddenly felt a thousand times better mood-wise, despite not feeling hungry. I have noticed this over several whole30s no matter what stage/day I'm on. Long story short, should I eat regardless of whether I'm hungry or not? MeadowLily
I believe in a tad of intuitive eating. After I read, ISWF....I was convinced that I would Open. Mind. Insert. Possibilities. I know that I cannot predict the future My brain on grain was a real drain I believe in 3 hots and a cot Three meals aday keeps the doctor away Over-restriction is self-inflicted starving Anything less than 3 meals aday is over-restriction. Over-restriction forces ourselves to deal with chronic hunger over too long a period of time. Over-restriction is definitely a trigger for thrill eating and causes massive cravings for pretty much everything. The number one reason any particular diet fails is that it's implemented so brutally strict right out of the starting gate. Every part of a person's being rebels fairly quickly. Over-restriction can lead to more binge eating. Truth.
Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 19, 2015 Administrators Share Posted January 19, 2015 At early stages of Whole30 and thus, hormone rebalancing, you absolutely should be eating template meals every 4-5 hours. You are rebalancing your body's signals, responses and hormone flow and you need to teach it what to rebalance to. I get wanting to be intuitive but when making this big change, your body's intuition may be buried a bit by the noise of change. Hang in there and keep eating. peace_positive
I agree, do 3 meals until you can intuitively eat (when you stop feeling crappy)
AmyS
There's a big difference between the hunger cues we get when we eat a standard American diet, and the hunger cues we get on Whole30. The grumpiness, etc., are actually hunger cues. The rumbling stomach we get on the SAD is really a sugar crash (though this can happen to me too, on Whole30, if I'm not feeding myself well enough). We're used to the rumbling stomach as a hunger cue, but it's not very reliable. Grumpy/down/irritable is a reliable hunger cue. Somehow we know this with young children but we don't think it applies to the rest of us.
Brewer5
I don't find this odd at all. This is called being hangry. I went to find a log to see what you had for breakfast. Don't see one... Are you having sugar (fruit/potatoes) for breakfast? If so -- not a great way to set the mood for the rest of the day. Blood sugar ups & downs are not conducive to a steady, level feeling. Guest
thanks everyone I made myself eat more regularly yesterday so hopefully it'll help. I don't have sugar for breakfast as I have a very active sugar dragon....normally it's homemade vegetable soup with scrambled eggs or ground beef.
