doublev
I'm on Day 22. I felt great! Really great! On about Days 8-10. Then I felt fine for about ten more days--not awesome, just regular fine. For the last few days now, though, I have been in a total slump. I'm tired, I'm grumpy, I get frustrated easily, I cry for no reason--it's 9 a.m. and I have already cried twice today--I am not hungry and have to force myself to eat, I'm having a hard time concentrating. Oh, and now I'm getting a headache. I have the anti-Tiger Blood, and I actually feel worse than I did before I started this program. What should I do? Recent food: Tuesday: M1: Leftover spicy ground pork hash with potatoes, onions, brussels sprouts, and two small eggs + 1 cup coffee M2: Giant green salad with veggies (like 4 cups of greens and veggies) + 4-5 oz. of chicken breast + olive oil/lemon dressing + small handful of cashews M3: Ribeye (maybe 6 oz.? it was decent sized) + homemade mayo + roasted veggies (I don't remember exactly which, probably sweet potatoes and some others) Wednesday: M1: Three eggs sunnyside up + 2 slices sugar-free bacon + big pile of sauteed tomatoes + 1 cup coffee. This has been a pretty standard breakfast for me. M2: Blackberries and a couple handfuls of cashews. Yes, I know this isn't a proper meal, but I wasn't hungry and I couldn't choke down any meat, which sometimes grosses me out M3: (compliant) rotisserie chicken breast + roasted root veggies (carrots, parsnips, purple potatoes) + homemade mayo/herb sauce These are all pretty comparable to what I've been eating all along, so I haven't changed anything since when I was feeling fine. I drink enough water to sink a ship (80-100 oz. a day). I have a known food intolerance to sesame oil and ice cream upsets my stomach, but no other known allergies/intolerances. (I had an allergy board done over the sesame thing a few years ago, and I wasn't allergic to cashews or anything.) I have no known medical issues. I have been sleeping 8 hours a night, which is normal for me. My blood pressure is normal (116/80), which it usually is. I started this journey to break out of a cheese-crackers-wine for dinner rut and to boost my overall sense of well-being, so.... I'm in 22 days and I want to finish, but tired and crying isn't encouraging that. Help, please.
GFChris
I'm sorry you're feeling so blue. Except for the M2 listed on Wednesday that you already acknowledged, everything looks to be in order. I wonder if some selenium-rich foods could help? Brazil nuts, cooked oysters, mussels, shrimp, tuna, halibut, tilapia and mackerel and snapper are among the top choices. Keep having the carb-dense vegetables daily. Maybe try increasing those to two meals a day and see if that helps?
peace_positive
PMS? With W30 sometimes I didnt get the obvious symptoms that I got before eating right. Also sometimes too high carbs can act as sugar and do it for me. Everyone's different; I can't handle a daily sweet potato for sure.
doublev
Thanks for the thoughts! I haven't had PMS since high school, but I'm having some other monthly cycle-related weirdness so perhaps that's it. That would be completely out of character for my body so I have no standard of comparison. I did feel less crummy after dinner last night--at least I wasn't crying--so maybe the carby veggies are a good plan for me.

While on the Whole30 our hormones are changing and many women experience changes with their menstrual cycle that they never experienced before the Whole30. I would not write off hormonal changes related to your cycle to be the culprit, regardless of how your body has behaved since high school.

I'm not discounting hormonal changes, but like I said--no standard of comparison. If that's the case, I assume there's nothing I can do about it but wait it out? Guest Andria
I guess that I am still not clear if this is coinciding with the pre-menstural phase of your cycle. If it is, yes, you may just have to wait it out for a few days. Keep eating your starchy carbs, like you have been doing, for at least one meal a day and maybe increase them to two meals per day. Your meals look fine only as long as you are not exercising. If you are exercising with any intensity above walking, you may not be eating enough. You did not mention exercise, so I assume you are not particularly active?
doublev
My period (or at least significant spotting) started about 12 days early, during the phase when I was still fine, so almost a week ago, I guess. I continued to feel fine for a few days. I didn't necessarily connect it. But it sounds like probably I should? I'm happy to eat more potatoes if that will help. I walk/hike and do barre classes, although I've been too wiped out the last couple of days to do much of either. I'm not hungry between meals. Physibeth
Any other changes going on in your life right now? Weather? Stress? How is your water intake? So many things effect energy and mood and I know it can be frustrating.
doublev
Any other changes going on in your life right now? Weather? Stress? How is your water intake? So many things effect energy and mood and I know it can be frustrating. No, not really. It's January in the Midwest but the weather has been pretty decent. I had an incredibly stressful fall from a major move and the unexpected death of a pet, but that has settled and nothing stressful has happened since the beginning of my Whole30. I drink at least half my body weight in ounces of water. My husband is sleeping better, losing weight, etc., so if anything our household is less stressed because he's in an unusually good mood. I really want my situation to improve or at least level out because I know he wants to stick with this for a while and he can't cook, so it's just easier if we're both following along. So I appreciate all your suggestions!
Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 22, 2015 Administrators Share Posted January 22, 2015 You're basically right en pointe as Chris had said (minus that one little meal). Maybe you want to go and get your iron checked with a blood test? Low iron can cause all of the symptoms you're complaining of and tends to come on and then progressively make you feel worse.
