Applegate Turkey Breast, Packaged

Recommended Posts

I am on day 4 of whole 30 and just now realized that the packaged Applegate turkey breast contains carrageenan. After reading someone's blog that Applegate brand is okay, I was quick to buy it. I've eaten the turkey 2/4 days now for lunch with lettuce. Does this mean I should start over at Day 1? Thanks for the advice.

Carrageenan is a extremely inflammatory and therefore would be a reasonable cause for restart. Of course you get to make your own decision but being how you are so close to the beginning it shouldn't be too much of a big deal to repeat three days.  :)  http://whole30.com/2014/06/really-start-whole30/

Here's Melissa Hartwig's take on Carrageenan:

So you (and everyone) knows our perspective...

Carrageenan is a concentrated, refined seaweed extract used to thicken processed foods, and is found in everything from deli meat to yogurt to chocolate. Carrageenan is significantly inflammatory if it gets into the body, which can happen with increased gut permeability. (Carrageenen is actually used in laboratory studies to create inflammation.) Furthermore, carrageenan may be degraded to components which can cross even a healthy gut barrier, even in tiny amounts.

This makes it potentially nasty stuff; therefore it's out for the Whole30. We caution folks not to fall into the "it's natural" trap, as there are plenty of unhealthy substances that start off as a plant!

Best,
Melissa

One more thing to note.  Even though some products are noted to be compliant based on the internet or even these forums, you must read every label.  Formulations change from region to region and companies sometimes even just change up their recipes without pointing it out.  Even if it's something you buy 50 times a year, read them every time to avoid being caught out.

You can't trust brand recommendations, even the ones you see on the forum. Vendors change their formulations or sometimes use one formulation in one region and something different in another. There is no substitute for reading labels.
