Firming things up

Recommended Posts

I am on Day 9 of being 100%, and overall things are going great! I have great energy, I'm enjoying cooking and eating, and my inflammation has already gone down a lot. Nice to be able to zip my pants up!

A sensitive question: any advice on what I should eat/stop eating in order to - shall we say - firm things up down there? I've had The Big D for two days now. I have to work tomorrow (I'm a school teacher) so I would really like to get over this! I would generally eat dry toast or white rice to calm my system, but I obviously can't do that this time.

Thanks! Wynne

Yeah, it happens. Things tend to settle down eventually. Around the 2 week mark, which you're closing in on!

You could try playing with the amount of your veggies or the amount of fat. Alternatively, you could try some probiotics or other digestive support and see where that gets you.

I second the recommendation of sweet potatoes. About 1/2 of one per day. I usually eat mine at breakfast. I honestly don't know why it works but it does. Apparently starchy veg that have been cooked and cooled have something called "resistant starch" which essentially acts as another form of dietary fiber, so maybe that's why. I get plenty of other fiber but the sweet potatoes do something different. Underripe bananas, too.

Unlike others, I find sweet potatoes take me in the other direction! About 1/4 of a large sweet potato is about all I can handle in a meal. I will try them cold though. Maybe that makes a difference. I love sweets.

My stool is soft most of the time. Eating lots of veggies, not much fruit. I supplement with white potatoes a few times a week. Also plantains are a nice addition to a vegetable medley. Unripe ones taste more like a white potato; riper ones are sweeter. They have to be cooked.

Any other suggestions for a firmer stool?

Does it help to cut down on fats?
