sweetiepie88
Hi there! I am on Day 1 of reintroductions, trying to plan out my reintroduction schedule for the next two weeks. I was curious if otherwise unapproved additives (sulfites, carrageenan, high fructose corn syrup, ect) are "approved" during reintros due to the fact that many foods in the categories of legumes, dairy, gluten free grains, and gluten grains contain these additives. For example, should I stay away from flour tortillas on my gluten re-introduction day since there are are lot of additives (sodium metabisulfite, corn starch, ect), and just reintroduce more pure forms of foods, such as whole-wheat pasta (which only has whole grain duram wheat flour, semolina, duram wheat flour, oat fiber). I am just looking to see how best to do these reintroductions to determine how my body does or doesn't react, and how to best know what exactly it is reacting to. Thanks!! kirkor
HFCS you'd probably be fine with reintro'ing on the non-gluten grain day since it's from corn, and you don't *typically* read about people having tangible issues with that product. Stuff like soy, sulfites, and carrageenan I'd probably take the time to reintro separately for maximum benefit because for certain members of the population those can be real trouble-makers. ..........and I'd never bother to reintro gluten. Physibeth
This is your science experiment so you get to decide how meticulous you want to be. But you spent the time cleaning your palette so I would think you would want to be super careful. I know I react to carrageenan, hfcs, and soy lecithin from my own experimentation. Had I not isolated those things out during my reintroductions I may not have been able to come to the conclusions I did. You can find whole clean versions of all the foods you might want to introduce, just like with finding whole clean Whole30 foods it takes detective work and a lot of label reading but it can be done. Just like with Whole30 it might mean preparing things yourself. I made my own corn tortillas during my reintroductions.
sweetiepie88
Thank you so much for the responses! I feel the same way, I've come this far already and I want to continue to be super careful so I know the ingredients that really do affect my body. Being meticulous with reading labels is key - thanks again!
Edesia
Physibeth - Can you please explain how you were able to isolate your reactions to carrageenan and and soy lecithin? I'm also trying to plan my reintroductions. Thanks.
Physibeth
Physibeth - Can you please explain how you were able to isolate your reactions to carrageenan and and soy lecithin? I'm also trying to plan my reintroductions. Thanks. I didn't properly introduce either...but in a mostly Whole30 context knowing my reactions to other things I noted how I felt when I had foods with these additives in them. You could treat them like a single reintro if you wanted to. Personally I would avoid them whether I reacted or not.
Edesia
Physibeth - Thanks. I read somewhere that soy lecithin is one of the top ten additives. Freakin' EVERYWHERE!
