For my birthday

I am very torn between starting my whole30 immediately and waiting until after my birthday. I have a lot of motivation right now, but Friday is my 21st birthday, and the rules say that there is no alcohol allowed. I am tempted to begin my whole30 and just allow the one exception since it is so close to the beginning. But I know that is not the way to do well is to not allow exceptions.

Another part of me wants to start now and make no exceptions. The part of me that has been wanting to be healthier and lose weight for 3 years. Since coming to college, I've gained 30lbs. And before I gained that weight, I was looking to lose it! I was 170 lbs and wanted to get down to 140. Now I've gone 30lbs in the wrong direction which will make my journey even more difficult! But it will also make the outcome that much better!

I'm hoping that having the support of the community will help me get through difficult times. If I can make it through my birthday, then I can make it the whole way!

Give yourself the best possible environment and frame of mind for starting and finishing all of the way through.  Your birthday is the main theme this week.  Go ahead and celebrate yourself.   From your post, I think the day after your birthday is going to give you that euphoria bump you need to make your W30 a smashing success.

There are no exceptions in Whole30. You can start whenever you like, but if you drink alcohol deliberately, you'll need to start over on Day 1 following that and have at least 30 days of compliance thereafter.

Happy birthday!

think of these next few days as prep time, both practically with shopping, meal planning, precooking/cutting veggies, and mentally.  Then go have a great time on your birthday and jump after your birthday.  And honestly, if it were me I'd probably plan on a Sunday start date if you're going to go out Friday, but then I tend not to...celebrate...moderately and I'd want that cushion day for recovery  ;)  but Lady M is right, there are no exceptions to a W30.  After your W30 is done you can decide if something, either food or drink, is worth having but the rules are clear for a W30.  Even for a 21st birthday.

You only turn 21 once.  Don't set yourself up for failure.  Do your best at eating right before the big day.  Celebrate and then give yourself a day or two get back to normal before committing to the program for 30 days.  Use these extra few days to prepare.  It took me almost 6 weeks to fully prepare.
