Day 22 - Foggy, Grumpy, Sluggish, Miserable!

Hi! As the subject says - I'm on day 22 and feel horrible. I'm really frustrated! I have a hard time getting up in the mornings, feel sluggish and unmotivated to do anything and frankly kind of down in the dumps generally. Here are a couple example days, Tell me what I'm doing wrong!!

M1: stir-fry mixed veggies with coconut milk & thai curry paste, 1.25 chicken breasts, coffee with coconut milk

M2: big spinach salad with sprouts, avocado, veggies (bell peppers, radish, scallion), olive oil, lemon juice and 1 organic chicken breast

M3: spinach salad w/ 1/2 avocado, slivered almonds, sprouts, mayo/lemon dressing and more thai stir-fry

M1: 2 eggs, 1 cup roasted root veggies, 2 grassfed organic breakfast sausage links, 1/4 avocado, black coffee

M2: 3 cups mixed veggies, 2 grassfed organic breakfast sausage links, 1/2 avocado

M3: 1/4lb (when raw) Grassfed burger with big lettuce/veggie salad w/ tahini dressing and roasted sweet potatoes.

M1: 3 eggs scrambled with scallions, big handful of parsley in ghee, 8 brazil nuts, grapefruit, black coffee

M2: Moroccan meatballs & sauce (from “clothes make the girl”)

M3: Big salad with arugula, 1/2 avocado, capers, beets, olive oil mayo & lemon dressing and tinned mackerel. 15-20 macadamia nuts

At first I wasn't eating any white or sweet potatoes but I read that feeling "foggy" can be fixed with a little extra carbs so i've been trying to eat a starchy vegetable at least once a day. I've been sleeping 7-8 hours a night, right through the night, normally go to power vinyasa flow yoga classes 4x a week but I'm down to 2x with how i've been feeling the last couple of weeks. I did a sort of lame modified whole 30 a year ago (gave up added sugars, alcohol, grains and legumes) and after 2 weeks i felt AMAZING, happy and energetic. So where is that feeling this time?! Help...

Hmmm...your food looks really solid, Cordelia, well done as far as I can see!  Therefore, I would assume perhaps you are experiencing something that isn't fully food related:  Where are you in your cycle? Historically do you suffer from depression or any seasonal reduction in energy? What's your stress situation like (think on any or all of: relationship, financial, kids/family, work)?  Do you suffer from seasonal allergies (those always kick the crap out of me in energy before the standard physical symptoms ever start)? Have you recently had a cold or flu?  Any bodily injury that you are nursing/healing?

For the starchy veggies, I really only see the one serving in the second day that you have listed.  It's possible that you just didn't list it specifically?

I would encourage you to eat more protein and more fat.

Specifically:

Day 1 M2:  How generous were your amounts of olive oil and avocado?  Chicken breast has almost NO fat.  I'd up the amount of avocado and olive oil, and maybe try using chicken thighs sometime and see how you like that.

Day 1 M3:  What is your protein source here?  I don't even see any.

Day 2 M2:  Two sausage links is probably not enough protein here.  Add 2 hard-boiled eggs (like you had 2 eggs with your sausage at breakfast), and you'd probably be in a better place.

Day 2 M3:  1/4 lb (when raw) burger is a TINY burger when cooked.  Eat two of them.

Day 3 M1:  You could try 4 eggs instead of 3.

IMO -- and this is just from my own personal research and experience -- (if you are going to have them) -- starchy veggies should pretty much always be saved for your evening meal, when you are ready to wind down for the day.  Having them during the day makes me foggy and sleepy, no doubt about it.  I'd say experiment with this and see what you notice.

It sounds like you are pretty active, with your yoga, and I would say you are not eating quite enough protein and fat.

Also -- really think back to what you were doing differently on your "modified" Whole 30 last year.  You felt great... what is different?

The magic might just need a little more time to kick in...

Thank you all so much for the feedback. I ended up stopping at day 27 in that last attempt at a Whole30 for life/family reasons. I took a couple weeks off (went on vacation!) from Whole30-ing and then get back on the wagon. I'm on day 19 now and feel much, much better. Not sure what I'm doing differently, except added more fat and stopped worrying so much. Thanks again for the help and support!
