paleo protein bars - julian bakery

I'm on day 6!  YAY!.  The only thing I'm craving is chocolate.....but passing the temptation as we (my husband and I) are doing this for Lent and have the spiritual reason to keep pushing through in addition to the health reasons.

I'm browsing the internet looking for whole30/paleo snacks to have packed in my purse/car, etc for emergency type situations where I can't wait for the next meal- you know, stuck in traffic or just behind in errands and can't get home in time.  Something healthy to tie me over without caving to something not as healthy.  We do have RX bars, but I came across an ad for the paleo protein bars by Julian Bakery and looking at the ingredients, from what I can tell on my phone, look like they may at least be okay for off the whole30 but I'm wondering if they would be okay for a backup now?  I think sunflower seeds are allowed now... I'm not sure what  the Isomalto-Oligosacharride (prebiotic fiber) would be?  I'm thinking maybe not, but just wanted to see if anyone here has investigated it ?

Isomalto-Oligosacharride is a sugar alcohol. The first ingredient (the primary ingredient) in this bar is sugar.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but honestly it makes me really mad the way they market stuff trying to trick people into thinking it is a healthy food. This is industrial garbage.

The best "bar" I have found for emergency use is the Epic bar. It's meat-based (some have a little dried fruit or nuts). The texture takes some getting used to but the nutrition in them is solid.

EDIT: ok so Isomalto-Oligosacharride is the second ingredient. still not a good choice. really a terrible choice and not permitted during the whole30. FYI, "Monk fruit" is also sugar (not fruit. sugar).

I'd suggest looking at a different set of possibilities for emergency/portable foods. Try taking a can or pouch of tuna, salmon, or sardines along, plus a small fork and napkin. Carry a small container of cubed sweet potato or other cubed starchy vegetable. The classic emergency food would have to be pre-peeled hard boiled eggs, or their dressed-up cousin Scotch eggs.  Look at ways to make emergency food plans that will be both portable and satisfying.

To answer your specific question about the Julian Bakery Paleo Protein Bars, they would not be compliant because they contain vanilla, which is out for a Whole30. Beyond this, if you look at the Wikipedia description of isomalto-oligosaccharides http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isomaltooligosaccharide, you can see that they function as a sweetener. This line from the Wikipedia article explains:

IMO is a sweet-tasting, high-density honey like syrup in appearance which could be spray dried into powder form.

This is definitely a classic example of sweeteners being disguised as healthy food additives. Frankly, this level of hard work at deception makes me a bit distrustful of this company generally. Why not just use honey or maple syrup and call it that? Both of those are acceptable in the larger Paleo world. Why hide the fact that you're putting high-density honey in your bars? Sheesh.

Pack some portable protein and veggies and eat up!

The Julian Bakery has been scamming the diabetic and low carb communities for many years.  To read more please click here: http://low-carb-scams.com/the-bernie-madoff-of-the-low-carb-scam-artists/

It is very sad that this or any other supposed low carb company can so easily lie about their products.  The FDA has been on the case since my first complaint in mid-2012.

In many ways it is very good that Whole30 is so strict because it is teaching people to scrutinize what they are eating.  Kudos to Whole30.

When I was at Expo East I found the Yawp Bar. It was delicious and it was basically nuts and dried fruits. Not Whole 30 approved. However the Chapul Bar, made from Cricket flour and of Shark Tank fame, I also tried and I found it delicious! It is Whole 30 approved. Crazy high in protein too.

Did you read the reivews on the Paleo Bars on Amazon? They were terrbile. They were so bad looks like they pulled the product.

Actually....I think the Yawp Bar has some whole30 approved varieties.

From what I understand, Paleo Bar's manufacturer stopped selling on Amazon because they couldn't control the reviews--too much bad press.

Another option is time your outings during that 4/5 period of time in between meals.. if at all possible of course..   I think in the beginning we look for  quote un quote  E M E R G E N C Y food cause it feels weird to give up the snacking we've been doing..
