holy stomach pain, batman

Today is day 3 of my whole30. I'm having 2 cups of veggies with every meal (all low fodmap). I've woken up with a horrid paid on the right side just under my ribs, my stomach is so bloated and my tummy is really crampy, painkillers aren't doing anything :(

 

eating every 4 hours, drinking lots of water and herbal teas (peppermint or ginger)

 

is this to be expected for adjustment?

Hard to say for sure with knowing how much of a change this was for you. Did you eat a lot of vegetables prior to starting a whole 30?

Two things come to mind. First off is gallbladder. Upper right abdomen could be gallbladder pain. Did you eat a lot of fat with these meals? Is it more fat than you're used to eating?

Second do you think it's gas? The bloating sounds like gas. There is a yoga position that can help relieve that. Light on your back with your feet elevated on a chair or ottoman for about 20 minutes. Works great for me. It relaxes an abdominal muscle activated in stress.

this is my 3rd whole30. My body is used to veggies and I was eating fairly healthily prior, but I've been making sure I get 2 cups every meal for the past 3 days (well cooked, and often mashed or in soup form) 

 

I am careful with how much fat I eat as I have IBS and too much fat can worsen it for me. I use olive oil a lot.

 

I will try that pose when i get home from work, I still feel awful! thankyou :)

Ah, a fellow FODMAP-ing IBS-er!! Lucky us, right?  ;)

 

I couldn't post the link before, here is more info on the psoas muscle, see Figure 10. When I start to feel pain, I do this asap. Within 10-15 mins I can actually feel and hear a blurpy movement in my gut and I feel better soon. Most of the time, I can also avoid the IBS-D symptoms that come later. My theory is that by relaxing the muscle the gut motility issue resolves. I'd been doing this move for years, but only recently found that it's a "thing" in yoga and massage.

 

It's also known as the "constructive rest position". Googling that term pulls up a lot more info.

What does the psoas have to do with food allergies?  Most of our immune system (75%) is in our gut, and a healthy psoas is meant to massage our organs and intestines as we breathe and walk.  During the fight or flight response (read more about "modern day bears" here), our intestines are told to shut down and all of our energy is diverted to the legs.  This amazing design lets us run away from lions and tigers and bears, ah ha.  If our body thinks it is in constant danger, and the psoas is chronically tight, chronic constipation and anxiety can ensue. Conversely, if your intestines are inflamed because of food sensitivities, celiac disease, auto-immune issues, Irrittable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or allergic reactions, this may also influence the psoas to tighten.  Releasing the psoas can bring great relief.

 

Figure 10:  Finally, place your lower legs up onto a chair or a bench.  Let the the body sink into the floor.  If you have a heavy blanket, or a sand bag (as pictured above), place it over your lower belly from hip to hip. This is a very lovely and easy way to relax the psoas muscle at any time.  Practice this by itself or after a work out.

 

I keep a foam mat at work in case I get symptoms there. I find a quiet conference room or office and take a break. Not always easy, but do what you gotta do! Hope your issue today is as simple as that and hope you are feeling better soon,

I'd definately ask your Dr. to look at your gallbladder. I have been going through the same exact thing since Jan. Wake up at 6am, take my thyroid med and 4oz of water and I could sit there and watch my tummy grow and the pressure start to build at the base of my rib cage along with other more painfull episodes at the base of my ribs 2-3 times a week. My Dr. did an Ultrasound of my gallbladder and it showed thickening of the gallbladder and today I had a radioactive HIDA scan and my Dr. called me back to tell me all my syptoms have been from a VERY low functioning gallbladder and I see a surgeon on Wed. to see what my options are and if it needs to come out. (Which I think it does)

I really he all yourain is just your body reacting to the extra veggies, but I'd ask your Doc to take a look at your gallbladder.

Your doctor would be the best place to go for continued pain and diagnosis...whether it be left or right side...up high or low. If pain becomes intense, have someone drive you to the emergency room.  

 

My mother drove herself to the emergency room in the middle of the night while having a heart attack on the way.

She didn't want to bother anyone.  She thought it was acid reflux.

I still have weird pain on the left side; it's not intense but nagging. Weird.
