MSKRC
I just finished my whole30 on Monday and this week has been horrible. I haven't done proper reintro so I'm back eating whole30 with hopes to start this week. I was completely dumb and ate some chocolate while watching The Bachelor on Monday night and that evening was up with the worst stomach flu ever. I haven't been able to recover and still feel sick. At this point I can't tell if my stomach is sick from what I've been eating or from an actual virus. (I really didn't have that much chocolate at all). I guess my questions are - will I ever be able to eat normal food again? I ate very healthy before this but it seems I can't even eat something with added sugar like sausage (all other ingredients are compliant) without feeling queasy! Can sugar cause gastro issues? Sorry I'm all over the place but im super depressed about my state and have no idea what to do. My hope is to be able to eat whole grains again as those never caused any problems for me before. I don't care if I can't ever have dairy again. My husband did it with me and so far as been fine eating anything his little heart desires (he does have colitis and stayed on his medication so not sure if that prevented healing from occurring or if he would have needed longer than 30 days to see any results)
MeadowLily
A Whole 30 is 30 days of normal food. A Slow Roll Reintroduction is the best way to identify those foods that you may have had a problem with all along. The Reintroduction Phase gives you perspective on highly engineered industrial foods we are better off avoiding. Whole 30 foods are one ingredient foods. Eggs, fish, broccoli, avocado, sweet potato and so on. Multi ingredient processed foods may have MSG, additives, and fillers. Processed foods are deliberately engineered to be highly craved. Then there are those carefully tuned snack foods of sugar, salt and fat that inevitably lead to making a mess of everything. You were eating normal foods but your body may now be rebelling against those engineered and carefully tuned foods. Going forward, it would be good if you returned to normal foods. After about 7 -10 days, you can use a Reintroduction to determine what and how you want to eat for the rest of your life.
MSKRC
^ thanks for the response. I think I'm going to do that. I also need to figure out if I have a flu virus as it seems even when I eat compliant I am still feeling sick.
jent103
Sugar can mess me up if I have too much, and my tolerance is definitely lower now than it used to be. I don't think this is a bad thing, but it does take some getting used to! I would get back to feeling 100% so you're sure you don't have a virus, and then reintro intentionally, whatever method you use. I hope you feel better soon! Administrators ladyshanny Posted March 2, 2015 Administrators Share Posted March 2, 2015 I surmise that you have the flu........chocolate shouldn't make you physically ill for days. It's possible that you were fighting off the flu and then had the chocolate and your body had to redirect some resources to dealing with something it wasn't familiar with, thereby allowing the flu to gain a foothold. Once you're feeling better, Whole30 for a few days and then reintro again. If you are going to try the chocolate again, check the ingredients and make sure it doesn't have soy, dairy, carrageenan and sugar in it. That would be quite a bomb to your gut. Reintroing singular items is the best way to determine personal reactions.
KatyR
I can't find anything about what kind of symptoms I might experience during reintroduction. I reintroduced legumes yesterday as my first day of reintroduction. Today I keep feeling off and on nauseous at different times of the day. Not sure if nausea is even a possible side effect or if maybe I'm coming down with something myself. Having an idea of what sort of side affects these reintro foods might cause would be of great help if anyone knows of such a list...

KatyR, as far as I know there is not a list because each person's reactions are different. It might be a headache, fuzzy feeling, nausea, weakness, intestinal distress, bad skin, etc. etc. From what I've read it is suggested you go back to being W30 compliant for two or three days (longer if the nausea has not subsided) then try to either reintroduce a different food group, or try the legumes again.
