Iggils
I know that vegetable oils are a no no, but I was curious as to if that was just for cooking or all foods/items that have it in it. I am asking because I am a huge fan of Dave's Gourmet Ghost Pepper Sauce, lists vegetable oil as an ingredient. I was wondering (and kind of hoping) that because of the nature of the product the vegetable oil wouldn't be a problem, or should I not use the sauce? Ingredients: Ghost Pepper/Naga Jolokia, hot pepper extract, salt, vegetable oil, roasted garlic pulp, acetic acid.
jmcbn
"While we don’t think vegetable oils are a healthy choice (understatement of the century), we don’t expressly rule them out on the Whole30. If we did, you’d never be able to eat outside of your own kitchen, because all restaurants use them in cooking. We wanted to create the healthiest program possible, but we also need it to be do-able for those who travel for business or pleasure, or simply want to dine out during the month. Tip: Eliminate the consumption of vegetable oils at home, even if you’re not on the Whole30, and make sure the rest of your diet is focused on the most nutritious choices possible, especially if you dine out frequently." Sorry, but I think this is a no. If you're dining out you've little choice what kind of oil is used, but I assume you're hoping to use this sauce at home - i.e. making a conscious decision to use something that is not the most nutritious choice possible... missmary
The other thing to watch with vegetable oil: often it is actually corn or soy oil, which is not permitted, even in a dining out situation. For some reason food manufacturers think corn and soy are vegetables. They are a grain (corn) and a legume (soy).
Iggils
Thank you both for your answers. MissMary you are correct I am not sure which vegetable oil it is. jmcbn, I did want to use this sauce and was hoping because of the other ingredients and that fact that ghost chilis capsaicin is very high (http://www.bhut-pepper.com/about.html) would counteract this negative ingredient. Do either of you know an alternative sauce that is as spicy as the ghost chili that would be compliant?
kirkor
You could ask the manufacturer, they might tell you. But maaaaan, ghost peppers? Really?! :-) I'm having an adventurous day when I go for "2 stars" at the Thai place!
Edesia
Iggils - We have a jar of Dave's Ghost Peppers in the fridge. Whole peppers in water, salt, acetic acid, garlic, and citric acid. No oils, gluten free. I bought the jar way before I even knew about Whole30, but I think this is compliant. The label says, "So hot, they're spooky." They're not kidding. One TINY piece is enough to fire up a recipe.

They were available at my local Sprouts this past winter, but I haven't seen them these past few weeks. I took a container to a friend of mine who's a total spice hound and he loved them. Amazon has a product called volcano dust that appears to be straight-up dried ghost pepper. (Like chili powder except, you know, kind of deadly.)
