cassweaver
Hey guys. Day 22 checking in. I'll go right ahead and say it-- I am a major sugar addict and compulsive overeater. I feel like I've accomplished so much already in these first few weeks, but I know that I have kept the sugar dragon alive. He's weaker..but still there. It's time to slay him once and for all. That's why I'm not even going to buy fruit this week. Frozen blueberries mixed with coconut chips have unfortunately become a food without breaks for me.. I feel like in the 'real world' and with my diet how it was before Whole30, I never in my life would have binged on blueberries! Haha. But now that it's my only crutch and call-back to those sweet treats, it's become a problem. I am actually really nervous to truly cut ties with sugar. Sometimes I feel like I might just be craving something cold after dinner, if any of you have any suggestions for that. Wish me luck, please! Momsmorningwisdom
I am so glad to see this post. I could have written it myself. I'm on Day 28 and plan to continue a little longer to work on my sugar. I currently have strawberries in my house and plan to NOT buy anymore fruit until I know I've starved my dragon out. MeadowLily
A serving of fruit after a meal of proteins, vegetables and good dietary fats is the best option. Fruits first, last and inbetween meals keeps the sugar dragon propped up. Fruits are not as nutritious as vegetables. Don’t let them push vegetables off your plate just because they are more fun to eat Eat a wide variety of fruits, especially when they’re in season Limit dried fruit If you’re battling sugar dragons / sugar cravings, don’t rely on fruit as a crutch when you have sugar cravings – it may be better to conscientiously avoid the fruit, nut butters, health bars, or anything else that may prop up your sugar cravings Meal planning: Start with 1-2 servings of fruit a day – a serving is about the size of a fist. Feel free to add some fruit either with your meals or immediately after. Fruit should not take the place of vegetables. Don’t juice or make smoothies. It’s better to eat smaller servings of fruit throughout the day than a large amount in once sitting. If you find yourself reaching for more fruit in the summer, when it’s local, fresh, and delicious, that’s okay (as long as you’re not responding to sugar cravings)
Zoe
cassweaver I am the same with fruit - 1 can become a tonne - then it can go horribly wrong FINALLY I recognize this - which is half the battle BUT since re-discovering sauerkraut I think I have a fix !! I think freezing soda water works well - cold fizzy water always seems colder than still Good luck
mich2k15
Thank you for posting about this! I am starting Day 16 of my first Whole 30 and it's going well overall, but I realized when I came home from Trader Joe's last night, that I have developed a serious fruit problem. I literally bought: a bunch of bananas, a bag of granny smiths, a bag of grapefruit, a huge carton of raspberries, a pineapple, two kiwis, and an assortment of dried fruits. I'm a single girl!! Oh yeah, and I bought some sausages, which I skipped in favor of devouring some fruit. Woops! I clearly need to ween myself off fruit which have basically replaced grains, legumes and sugar in my life. Not really sure how to go about this. What is an acceptable amount of fruit to eat each day? 1-2 servings?

What is an acceptable amount of fruit to eat each day? 1-2 servings? We recommend that each meal consist of: 1-2 palm-size portions of protein 1-2 thumb-size portions of fat 1-3 cups of veggies Fruit is optional on Whole30 and if consumed, one or two fist-size pieces per day with or immediately after meals is the recommendation. Do not let fruit push veggies off your plate.

I thought I had tamed my sugar dragon with my first Whole30, but I just quieted him. He came back with a vengeance a few months later, and now I'm on my second Whole30 with ten pounds to lose! I was able to limit fruit to one serving after dinner, but cashews and almond butter tasted sweet to me when I wasn't eating sugar, so they became food with no brakes for me and I have to avoid them. Now I'm eating a baked potato after dinner instead of a piece of fruit, and surprisingly, I am satisfied with that. I know it's not something cold, so not the suggestion you were asking for. Good luck!
Administrators ladyshanny Posted March 25, 2015 Administrators Share Posted March 25, 2015 Now I'm eating a baked potato after dinner instead of a piece of fruit, and surprisingly, I am satisfied with that. This is what ultimately rendered a pretty aggressive sugar dragon a Sugar Kitten. Removing fruit and adding a serving of sweet potato every evening. Dragon dead. Meow.
