sonjalopez
Day 26 and I've been feeling good! Gone through the phases...been super sick, read the forums a million times, etc. I've been super diligent too...even threw out a box of Larabars because I felt they were becoming like candy. Here's the issue. Information overload had me totally blank out and slip up inintentionally! IBut yesterday at a restaurant I frequent we had a work event. I ordered french fries to split with a friend because 1. they are fried in canola oil 2. they are simply potato, rosemary and salt. i was assured by the chef they were gluten free. Keep in mind this is the FIRST time having canola oil on my whole30 and first time eating out. I get home and start reading about chips...only to realize: although french fries have compliant ingredients...they aren't allowed? agh, i get the whole no brakes thing but honestly I left half the fries on the plate..i had maybe two handfuls and then stopped eating when i felt full. You're probably thinking this is amateur hour. Like how did I miss French fries on whole 30? really!?! but they have never been a problem food for me as far as stopping goes. And as I understood the ingredients were compliant. But I get it...fried food isn't the greatest choice. Doh. And yes, I have read all the other Can I have___ for fries. But it still seems kinda grey...does this mean I have to restart? I plan on continuing this lifestyle anyway but damn...I thought I was doing so well! Thanks! MeadowLily
Back in the old days, folks were told to start over....now the choice is left up to you and most just add on additional days at the end of their Whole 30. It's the same thing but mentally it makes many feel better about it. French fries - white or sweet potato are all the same to me when fried in oil. They're a throwback to play foods but that's just me. You get to choose. Whatever your end game goals are at the end of a Whole 30 can help you make this decision. What are/were your plans for Day 31?
sonjalopez
I have autoimmune problems so my goal was to follow re-introduction and pin point problems...then go paleo probably. I haven't been eating gluten for a while but with Whole30 I'm really starting to feel so much better.
sonjalopez
I want to do another WHOLE30 as well. I might just turn this one into a WHOLE40.
MeadowLily
Good decision. I'm so glad you didn't have a food bender blow-out planned for Day 31.

nana
i have sweet potato fries in coconut oil in the oven? i know canola oil itself wouldn't be a game changer so what is it with these french fries that is such a no-no?
jmcbn
i have sweet potato fries in coconut oil in the oven? i know canola oil itself wouldn't be a game changer so what is it with these french fries that is such a no-no? French fries, fried food, bad food choice, comfort food, psychological link to fast food, etc., etc., etc... In the olden days you weren't allowed white potatoes at all. GFChris
i have sweet potato fries in coconut oil in the oven? i know canola oil itself wouldn't be a game changer so what is it with these french fries that is such a no-no? From the Whole30 Can I Have guide: "French Fries: Not if they’re commercially prepared or deep-fried Ordering fries with your (no bun, no cheese) burger and green salad really misses the point of the Whole30. Fries are the epitome of “food with no brakes,” and anything deep-fried in vegetable oil is be default unhealthy. Make your own potatoes at home using coconut oil, duck fat, or ghee, and baking or roasting them in the oven instead of deep-frying them; or order them baked or mashed (no cheese, sour cream, or butter!) if dining out." Carlaccini
I would say if you make french fries yourself - ie: buy the potatoes, wash, peel, and cut up the potatoes into fries, then roast them in the oven with oil, salt pepper and rosemary - they are allowed. But if you purchase them as a convenient item from a bag - 1) I have yet to find a compliant french fry this way 2) these would not be allowed. nana
so the issue is deep fried verses oven baked? bagged verses fresh? white potatoes are now allowed on whole 30 ? i did buy my potatoes(sweet) peel wash and cut up and put a small amount of coconut oil and salt on them and then baked. i had not read the deep fried thing. thanks for pointing it out. recently i read where someone had some sweet potato chips because all ingredients were compliant and i knew it wasn't ideal but didn't know it was a start over and i don't believe(could be wrong) anyone pointed that out to this person
Susanrenee
I regularly make sweet potato 'fries' in the oven. Sweet potato, olive oil or ghee and salt. I believe they are allowed.
LissFish
Wait? We can have canola oil? I think I need to do some more research as well. I missed that. I think you're ok sonjalopez because eating out at a social/work event is such a hard thing to do on Whole30. As long as it's not a regular occurrence of the deep fried I think it's ok to just add on. That's just me.
GFChris
Wait? We can have canola oil? I think I need to do some more research as well. I missed that. Only while dining out. Details here in the Whole30 Can I Have Guide: "Canola Oil: Yes, reluctantly (because sometimes, you have to dine out) While we don’t think vegetable oils are a healthy choice (understatement of the century), we don’t expressly rule them out on the Whole30. If we did, you’d never be able to eat outside of your own kitchen, because all restaurants use them in cooking. We wanted to create the healthiest program possible, but we also need it to be do-able for those who travel for business or pleasure, or simply want to dine out during the month.Tip: Eliminate the consumption of vegetable oils at home, even if you’re not on the Whole30, and make sure the rest of your diet is focused on the most nutritious choices possible, especially if you dine out frequently." Munkers
I have autoimmune problems so my goal was to follow re-introduction and pin point problems...then go paleo probably. I haven't been eating gluten for a while but with Whole30 I'm really starting to feel so much better. If your goal is to pinpoint sensitivities for autoimmune issues then you really do need to be 100% compliant for at least 30 days (some sources recommend a minimum of 6 weeks). That's the minimum time required for an elimination/provocation challenge. So if vegetable oil was something you're thinking might be a trigger for your AI then you'll have to restart the clock, maintain at least 30 days free of the stuff, and then do your re-introduction challenge.
