The Whole30 has to work!

I'll try to make this the short version. LOL  I have been sick for the past 5 weeks.  At first I thought it was the stomach flu, and maybe part of it was, but I never recovered.  After many family physician appointments and ultrasound of my gallbladder and meds that didn't work (WHY do they give you meds when they don't know what it wrong??)

I decided they were not helping me, so I called a Gastroenterologist, got in that day and explained that at that point I had dropped 14 lbs, I couldn't eat, I felt nauseated all the time, my stomach hurt terribly to touch, headaches, dizzy spells, EXTREME exhaustion, low BP and no one being able to tell me what was wrong, he said he thought I had an ulcer and scheduled an upper endoscopy.

The results came back that I did in fact have a small ulcer, a sliding hiatal hernia, erythema and some polyps in my stomach which they biopsied.  They came back fine.  I was getting sicker, missing work and feeling terrible.  He then sent me for an Xray, then a CT scan, then a HIDA scan....all results were normal. By this time I have now dropped 25 lbs.  I have never been more frustrated.

While laying on my couch over the past 4 weeks I saw Dr Oz show with Suzanne Sommers and she was talking about food, mold, sugar etc being toxic, and what it does to your health.

I don't know if they mentioned the Whole30 or where I saw it but I thought, I got to read this book.

I bought the audio version and listened to the whole book in 2 days.  I was fascinated. I called my sister and told her this book, this lifestyle is for us!!! Her and I both could relate to the I have lost and gained the same 50 lbs over and over.  I would say I am still  about 80 lbs overweight.  But like the book says, this isn't just about weight for me, I cannot continue to be sick, I need to heal my body from the inside out!

So, I started immediately, I thought heck I cant really eat anyway, I wont be missing any junk. I had hard boiled eggs and fruit for the first day- just making sure I could eat and not get sick.

I went to the grocery today and filled my kitchen with fruits, veggies, Laura's lean meats, wild caught cod, avocados, coconut oil and water, spices that didn't contain sugar.... and couldn't wait to get home and start preparing.

I will have to say I have never had a better meal! AND get this, I could eat it and didn't get sick afterward.  That is HUGE.

I am in, fully fledged, 100%, signed in blood. lol

Thank you! Thank you, for writing "It starts with Food".  I already know it has changed my life.

I feel the same as you about this! I've been sick with a sinus infection for months now. Nothing the doctors have done has really made much of a difference. I'm on Day 2 of my first Whole30 and have already noticed a difference with my symptoms. I can foresee this changing things for me in really positive ways!!

Hang in there!

It's frustrating but I am in this to change my life.  I think the fact that all those test they DIDNT find anything, has opened my eyes and leaned me towards believing that crap food could very well be the issue!!!

I hear you! It's only day 3, but I've noticed a HUGE difference just with energy level alone.....definitely a plus considering I feel like I've been dragging the last few months with illness after illness. There is no way I'm going to go back to my old 'habits' with food....starting to see the light :)

Hope you've had a good day 3 :)

How is everyone's week?  Today is day 6  I have done great, haven't had any major cravings.... which is good.

Curious.... is unsweetened applesauce ok?  I read the ingredients - no sugars at all.  Just apples and water.  it helps my sweet tooth so hoping its ok.

Technically, this product  would be compliant on a Whole30.

But, beware of using it to satisfy a sweet tooth.  The way we advise to satisfying a sweet tooth is to not feed it something sweet. Instead, when you are genuinely hungry (litmus test: you could eat something bland like steamed fish and broccoli), the advice is to have a mini meal of protein, veg and fat.

If you aren't hungry and just have a craving, do something non food related instead. Call a friend, read a book, listen to music, go for a walk.

It's wonderful to hear that you are healing yourself by eating Whole30.  Congrats!

I have lived all my adult life overweight and struggled with diets which were never successful or long term.  Every diet I've ever been on they say it has to be a "change in lifestyle".  Whole30 truly has changed my relationship with food.  I need to have strict guidelines such as you can eat this but you can't eat that.

Since August I've lost 50 lbs.  I feel amazing.  I've started running.  I've learned how to cook amazing food that is completely W30 compliant.

Now, when I eat something not Whole30 I feel anxious, sometimes sick.  It's come to the point where I eat W30 about 90% of the time just so I can continue to feel fantastic.  I am gearing up for another W30 starting Monday because I still need to lose another 50 lbs to be at my ultimate goal.

Don't be afraid to extend your Whole30.  I did a Whole100 Jan 1 to Apr 10 to really have the way of life "stick".  It was way to easy to fall back into my old ways of eating after 30 days.  I need a longer commitment and it really worked for me.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey! I'm glad to hear you're still on track and doing well :) Hopefully all the 'stuff' you were dealing with is on it's way out as well!

I'm feeling fantastic, and noticing huge improvements in how I am feeling and looking.....I'm very, very close to trying on some old clothes in a size smaller!! I think once I hit Day 30 I'm going to keep on going with this. I have not felt this good in a very long time - we're talking years!!

I am taking about a week off then doing round 2 starting June1.

May I suggest, based on my own personal experience, that you don't go wild during your week off? It makes it so much harder to get back on track.

Check out The Guide to Nutritional Off Roading to help determine if foods are really worth it for you, and of course, you should consider doing reintroductions at some point, you can read about that here or for the slow-roll reintroduction plan, here.
