streakolean
I LOVE V8.......is that OK to drink?
GFChris
In general, veggie juices are discouraged: we want you to chew your vegetables vs. drink them, as chewing is more satiating.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted May 1, 2015 Moderators Share Posted May 1, 2015 Liquid food digests faster than whole foods, so drinking V8 steals away some of the benefits of a Whole30 that we want you to experience. Technically, you can drink V8 juice, but you are doing yourself a disservice when you do.
Georgia Kaye
I wouldn't have this in place of my veggies, but in addition to them; but I'm guessing that putting horseradish, hot sauce, olives and celery in V-8 juice to create a Bloody Shame would be considered swypo? jmcbn
I'm British and I had to google Bloody Shame - and yet it sounds so British LOLI don't know that I'd consider it SWYPO seeing as we're good with mocktails, but I'd still say you'd be better to chew your veg than to drink them... In this case it's all to do with satiety, and how your body interprets liquids over solids. It's the actual act of chewing which kick-starts the production of digestive enzymes so your body is barely going to even register that you've taken these veg on board. That said if you're having this along side your veg it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. It'd still be compliant, and it'd still be a million times better than a larabar. The recipe I found contains worcestershire sauce, which would likely make this drink non-compliant. Most worcestershire sauces contain several off-plan ingredients. frogtox
One of my favorite recipes is a pound of ground beef, a bunch of veggies (compliant while on Whole30) in a crockpot. Pour a container of V8 in, and 8 hours later you have a really tasty stew.
bellewannabe17
Frogtox -- please tell me more. Do you brown the ground beef first? For veggies, just carrots, celery, onion, maybe potatoes, turnip...anything else? Thanks.
frogtox
Frogtox -- please tell me more. Do you brown the ground beef first? For veggies, just carrots, celery, onion, maybe potatoes, turnip...anything else? Thanks. If the meat is fatty and I feel like I need to drain it, yes I brown it first. Last week I did this with some bear meat, which is really lean and started everything raw. For veggies, I usually just use a sack of frozen peas, carrots and corn, but since peas and corn is out I added carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, green beans and potatoes. Honestly you can add anything you want, and if you start with everything frozen the prep time is literally five minutes.

I usually have a Bloody Mary while I'm making my Sunday brunch, so the ability to have a non-alcoholic version of the same would be great. I certainly wouldn't use it as a substitute for my veggies; I love my veggies too much to drink them! As far as the worcestershire sauce is concerned, I don't use it in my Bloody Marys, so would leave it out of the virgin one. In my opinion, recipes are made to be modified! I'm truly surprised that this is considered ok, as imho it's about as swypo as it gets! I hadn't looked up mocktails, and didn't realize they were compliant. Thanks for the responses, and cheers! praxisproject
Mocktails *can* be compliant, but they can also be noncompliant (depending on ingredients), SWYPO and like any compliant food, can be eaten in an unhealthy way if you try really hard. SWYPO and Food Without Brakes are also individual, if you've had long term cocktail (or mocktail) habits and the thought of going 30 days without them is challenging, take the challenge Liquids aren't the same as food and they can have unhealthy emotions attached to them. Look up the veggies that make up V8 and try cooking with those.

Exactly. I don't have a sugar dragon; I have a cocktail and wine dragon. I have found it much easier to give those up than I thought it would be, but I've done it. The idea of making a mocktail from V-8 juice was for no other reason than to substitute it for my usual bloody Mary with our Sunday brunch; and for that reason, I believe it flies in the face of the Whole 30 guidelines, and perhaps even rules. Soooo, I have chosen to forego that until I decide it's time to have the real thing.
