Observations after my first week on Whole30 - Sunday, 3 May 2015

What I have learned after my first week on the Whole30 program is: 1) 90% of my eating has nothing to do with hunger, as I mostly eat out of boredom, stress or sheer indulgence, 2) it is all about choice and control, and 3) eating right is a question of organization and surrounding oneself with natural unadulterated food from the source.

I am now shopping for almost all of my food at the twice-weekly bio farm - yes, it is more expensive, but I like buying from the source which is a very small cooperative, and also I can tell when I eat their fruits and vegetables that they are real and alive. There is such a difference in taste, although maybe it is also because I am paying more attention to the food that I put into my mouth. This was not always the case before as I had a tendency to just pop things into my mouth out of habit.

I was always a good cook, but now I am taking greater pleasure in making new things from scratch. I made my first batch of fresh almond milk today, which was a success. I will only use it on the weekends for my coffee, as I have gotten used to drinking coffee black at work (cappuccino is one thing that I really miss). I am also discovering vegetables that I rarely cooked before, like small purple artichokes, leeks, bok choy and fennel. And it doesn't hurt that it is springtime, so there are bountiful vegetables and fruits in the market.

The biggest risks to success in the Whole30 for me is afternoons around 3 PM at work when I still feel an energy lull, and evenings right after work when I come home ravenous. I have therefore boosted up my lunches so that I feel satisfied up till 6 PM, and am trying to do activities in the early evenings, rather than just coming home and plopping myself down on the sofa.

It is all part of the adventure, but I am feeling stronger and more powerful, as I feel myself finally taking charge of my life and my future, thanks to this decision to pursue the Whole30 programme. Bring on Week 2! Yeah!

I am on my 5th day, I totally agree with everything you said, about the emotional eating and the taste of food.  I have been very congested in my chest since I started the Whole 30 plan. It has affected my exercise routine at the gym, as I like to push myself.  I haven't been to the gym in a week, so I am going to force myself to go today and see what happens

I am on day 5! almost through my first week.. We too try to get as much as we can locally and organic. It really does make a difference. I've been getting eggs from a friend at work. They are SO much more delicious than store bought eggs. the yolks are a deep, dark yellow. it makes all the difference to me!

I'm not sure how to reply to individuals who post on a topic I raised...oh well, I will try to reply to both jhalpern2 and WholeMama623. Jhalpern2 - I wonder if the congestion in your chest is part of the detoxing aspect of being on the program. But I think it is best that you see a doctor. Changing your eating habits drastically is serious stuff, so don't take any symptoms lightly. WholeMama623, I also was lucky enough to get a dozen eggs from a friend at work, whose neighbor raises chickens and ducks. I got 10 chicken eggs and 2 duck eggs. The chicken eggs were as you said - a brilliant yellow and I made a super asparagus and bok choy Asian-inspired frittata with them (see photo). I have never eaten duck eggs before so decided to fry them so that I could really experience the taste. The yolk was so creamy and delicious - I almost died from delight! I think the key is not to look at the program as a diet, but as a great adventure and new way of living. As soon as you think it is a diet, you think that you are suffering and depriving yourself and so the desire to cheat becomes strong. Instead, we are splurging on great, natural and whole foods and taking care of our bodies - it is more of an indulgence in our own health and showing love for our bodies. If you believe in God or a great Power, then we are doing what God intended - taking care of His/Her/It's creation by feeding it moderately from Nature's bounty.

thank you carlywand, I am also new to this navigating the forum and when and where to post.  I am holding off on seeing a Dr for my chest congestion as he will want to give me Rx to clear it up.  I want to try and stay away from Rx for the remainder of the 30.

I went to exercise yesterday for the first time in a week and it felt so good to push myself.  I am going again today.

Today is my 6th day and my family seems to be enjoying the flavor of the vegetables I've been cooking.  Everything tastes so good.

Day 5 here!  I'm anxious for the Farmer's Market to start up this season!  It's a very small venue here in Fairbanks, AK :)  but you can get some wonderful locally grown produce!  I will scout for eggs when I go.

I too find that I mindlessly put food into my mouth.  I go too far between meals and all in all don't think I'm eating enough.  I'm a stress/boredom eater.

Frittata looks yummy!

Today is Day 7, and I feel mentally great. My husband fell off the wagon yesterday at a meeting, but it just makes me more determined to stay on it. I love challenges.

Mother's Day is coming up and usually I stuff whatever makes me happy into my mouth, but I know I can resist.

I still am congested in my chest, but refuse to let it stop me from exercising.

I find the Daily emails I signed up for help me start my day with Whole 30.
