Megan4Decker
I need to do this for my health, for my sanity and for the benefit of living better to so I can teach my baby daughter to live better. I have determined to be ready for a start date of May 25. Memorial Day this year. First, I need to clear out my cabinets of the "off-plan" material. That is my goal for this week. Megan4Decker
So I am very new to forums and wasn't quite sure how to use the 'Log' format but I am going to use it like a diary as suggested. To start, I have to say I am very intimidated by this venture. Besides the fact that impulse control with eating has been an issue for my entire life, Budgeting is also an issue. The difficulty I am finding right now is preparing since I need to wait to start this program after a wedding coming up we are traveling for and coming home from just before Memorial Day. I have decided to practice shopping - get some coconut products (milk and oil), get some containers specifically for portion control for the nuts I plan to eat. I need to clarify the butter I have, for which cheese cloth is apparently needed (I have never even used 'cheesecloth'...) Today I did a kind of trial run shopping trip to work on finding only compliant foods today and not only was I nervous about what meat to get (so many choices) but I also felt very unprepared for the entire task. I am not sure if it was because I had my 1 year old with me, or if it was because I don't know what meat to buy for my husband to eat with me or if the thought of prepping vegetables enough (to not go hungry OR waste any) had me anxious; but I had a hell of a hard time doing this today. Making time for prep has me nervous as getting anything done with my daughter around is a huge challenge (which I often 'fail' considering my constantly VERY messy house). MOST IMPORTANTLY: My husband has committed to supporting me in this plan however he can. I CAN DO THIS!!!!
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted May 5, 2015 Moderators Share Posted May 5, 2015 Hi, Megan! Welcome to Whole30. It can be a bit daunting at first, but you'll get the hang of it. Have you checked out the Whole30 Good Meat Guide -- it explains some of the terms used to describe meat and what they mean. You might also want to check out this article about getting the most out of your grocery budget. Also remember that if it's not in your budget to buy organic or grass fed or whatever, you can still do Whole30, and you don't need a lot of the stuff people talk about like fish sauce or coconut aminos or almond flour. Just focus on preparing protein and vegetables with healthy fats. For an idea of how you might be able to do a lot of prep in one day, check out this sample meal plan. Megan4Decker
I wrote a whole entry and then messed it up by clicking out. Oh well, maybe it will help with getting concise? This is the gist: First, Thank you Shannon! Your links were just what I needed. I checked them all out and was specially helped by the Whole9 article about budgeting grocery shopping. Second, I tried some recipes today! I have always loved eggs so the "perfect scrambled eggs" truly were that. The :perfectly seared chicken breast" was also wonderful. I was able to pair veggies with the eggs and baked sweet potatoes and chopped salad with the chicken. Third, I cleaned out the pantry. I saved my husband his cereals. He doesn't anything else out of those cabinets except pasta, if I prepare it. On second thought, I may have gone overboard by taking out the canned mushrooms, but the tuna, potatoes, and onions were all safe. Finally. the portion of chicken (5 oz.) seemed like more after it was cooked. I didn't expect it to feel like enough meat but I was so full after eating it all. The key to it all feels like the savoring and chewing part. Slowing down is a BIG challenge. Since my baby was born, I feel like I have always rushed eating. Even today I might have gone too fast with her naptime looming. All in all, a great continuation of this journey. A friend of mine just reached Day 21 on her Whole30. So inspiring. She is a great blogger. I should ask her if I can share her blog.
Megan4Decker
Today I scored some great things at the grocery store!! Among them were Coconut Aminos!! I didn't expect them to be in the store! Woohoo! So excited. Now I can make a few Asian inspired recipes that my family and I were just going to miss out on. I love making stir fry for the guys and I love soy sauce. Hubs was saying how I cannot have sushi for 30 days and since our anniversary is in the midst he was bummed. But We can just get some smoked salmon, have it sashimi style and use the coconut aminos for a little dipping! We'll see, I may not even do that. But I have the option! Which always helps when making changes that are for the better. SO next up for me in prepping is getting rid of the fridge items I will not be eating (and that no one else seems to be eating either....) ie. Salad dressings. I plan on making the Whole 30 Mayo and using that as a base for a lot of my go-to salad / meat toppers. And of course utilizing the many vinegars that had gotten lost in the mix as well as some newfound oils I now have. Next week will be all about getting containers, trying my hand at making the clarified butter and mayo as well as some other mixes. I might even have to ask for my anniversary present early as we do not own a blender/ food processor of any type... Hmmm... The wedding is in 2 weeks and I bought myself a dress today which looks good now but will look even better in a month and a half. I am positive. Then after the wedding starts my 30 Days, then reintroduction. I know the first couple weeks will be rough since I REALLY want to have a piece of cake and possibly wine at the wedding so we shall see how that affects me and I will have to keep it in mind. Megan4Decker
I am beginning to get to know my Sugar Dragon... This week I have been eating breakfasts and lunches on plan. And then Dinners have been 'almost' on plan. Then this weekend was a graduation for my brother in law (Bachelor Fine Arts from State U) and then a party today for that graduation / my mother in law's birthday / Mother's day! And guess what, there was a cake. And did I have some? Well, I had Doritos on the way home from the graduation (the egg, nuts and banana were not appealing after that stress of child wrangling) then a steak quesadilla yesterday for a late dinner when we got home and then Mountain Dew to wash it down (my husband's) which made for a horrible night of sleeping. At least my daughter slept? Well, the cake happened today. And I felt awful all day. The cycle was easy to pay attention to from the perspective of too much cake jittering up my brain. So, What do I do? I prep for tomorrow's breakfast and get myself ready to make some Mayo and clarify the butter.
Megan4Decker
I began my 30 on Memorial Day to my husband's chagrin and ultimately to mine. So I re-began on Tuesday and am still going strong now day 4. Definitely had some brain fog going on and lethargy yesterday. TMI, I also noticed the change in Bowel Movements and I can tell my bosy isnt absorbing the slight increase of fat in the meals I am eating. I am loosely following the one week meal plan from The Whole 30 book. Very loosely as I switched days around a lot already. But I can feel changed taking place for the better of course!! So happy to be doing this. Can tell my brain is trying to fight the changes but one meal at a time things feel better. couldnt find my log so i used my phone this time. Woot! Here we go on this journey!
Megan4Decker
Day 5 and Had a craving that lasted long enough for me to contemplate making pancakes and end up eating a banana. I'm thinking I didn't eat enough protein and fat for breakfast today. Really had a hard time dealing with anyone. Especially hubby and the fact that my toddler woke extra early and needed a nap but was resisting really well. Unfortunately all kinds of things kept happening just as she would settle and almost be out. Stressful day. Just made a protein salad with whole30 ranch dressing, baby spinach, 1 hard boiled egg and seared chicken breast. Need some down time where no one is here to bother me. Megan4Decker
Today I definitely woke up feeling like I hadn't slept and I actually had! The cravings are tough but I am constantly feeling tougher. Planning ahead is still tricky with my daughter not being a helper yet (but instead a mess maker). There are definitely moments when I was super cranky these past few days and it was really difficult to stick to the plan and know that this is definitely for my benefit and better health. Megan4Decker
Starting to feel better energy wise. But I think I am coming down with a cold. We had a big shift in temperatures from hot to cold and in addition to not sleeping well in the first place, my immune system may have taken a hit enough to have trouble fighting a little bug. With all that. Today has already been a great Day 9 thus far. about to dig into some leftover chili for lunch.
