SarahRoseyCheeks
So glad there is a ladies only space to ask questions on!!! This is my first Whole 30 and I am 22 days in today. I got my first period while doing the Whole 30 today and it was 2 days late. Not a major issue obviously but my husband and I are trying to conceive and I honestly can't remember ovulating. I was so engrossed in doing this that I did not check with an ovulation test kit this month however every month for years I have been able to feel it...this month nothing. Do you think the lack of painful ovulation can be attributed to doing this? If so...AWESOME! Less pain is always a major gain. Is it normal for 1 or 2 cycles to be a little off when starting this? I am going for a Whole 100 and I just want to see if this is a normal occurrence. Also, are pre-natal vitamins naturally compliant? Are there actually starches or sugars in there? I would rather know now so I can get a good brand then wait until I definitely need them and be searching all over for them. Anybody know? Link to comment
Carlaccini
It is absolutely normal for your period to be off during your whole 30. In fact there is an entire thread dedicated to it! http://forum.whole9life.com/topic/10164-changes-in-menstrual-cycle/ As for your supplements - the only way really to know is read the ingredients list. Usually there are soy, starches, and sugars in many supplements. Link to comment
AmyS
Please do be aware that this space is not private. Anyone can see it. I say this because I only recently learned myself that it is publicly searchable and visible to all. Since you indicated that you are glad to have found a Ladies Only space, I want to make clear that it's only voluntarily so. That may not make a difference to you, of course, but I wanted to be clear. Link to comment
SarahRoseyCheeks
Thank you Amy! I figured men could look at this thread also. Hey if they wanna know by all means please have a go. Link to comment
MrsStick
Most pre-natals aren't compliant. However, if your diet is much more varied than before, you might not need to take them (doctors always say to take them for the folic acid, but folate is the naturally occurring form and is found in a lot of foods). 1 cup each of asparagus and spinach have 67 and 66% of your daily serving of folate, respectively. 1 cup of broccoli has 42%, as do turnip greens. A cup of beets has 34%, 2 cups of Romaine lettuce clock in at 32%, 1 cup of avocado has 30%, papaya has 26%, and brussels sprouts have 23%. And that's just a start. Bottom line: if you eat a varied diet with lots of green veggies, you very likely might not need to supplement your folate after all! However, that is up to you and your doctor/family. Not for us to decide. If after discussing the Whole 30 with your doctor you decide that it is more important that you take the pre-natals, regardless of ingredients, we won't say that you shouldn't follow doctor's orders. One other thing - as someone who is also trying to get pregnant (currently in the waiting game to find out if it worked this month!), your body is more likely to get pregnant if you stop focusing on it. It's less about knowing the exact moment you ovulate and more about doing it enough in the 4-5 days leading up to and on the day of ovulation...or so my doctor tells me. We'll see, I guess. Good luck! Link to comment
SarahRoseyCheeks
Hi Mrs. Stick!! Thank you so much for your kind comment! I wish you all the best of luck this month. I had hoped some one would say that with the right amount of veggies I wouldn't need extra supplements. I see my ob/gyn next month and I and will definitely ask her about this. Husband and I have been TTC for about a year now and may begin with a fertility specialist soon. I appreciate all the wishes of good luck we can get! Link to comment
MrsStick
Thanks - this is our first month trying and while I had told myself I wouldn't go crazy hoping/wondering...it happened without me realizing. I'm currently trying to chill, since nothing I do right now will make time pass faster for me to find out if it worked. But it's so annoying! I want to know now! *sigh* Lots of baby vibes heading your way...my sister ended up having to do IVF, so I've seen first hand how it goes...come on, babies! Link to comment
SpinSpin
SarahRoseyCheeks--So sorry to hear about your fertility troubles--I have certainly had mine! I thought I would share my story with you and rather than typing it again :-) I would just cut and paste from previous discussions. I am a big believer in Primal, Paleo, Nourishing Traditions and Whole 30 when it comes to straightening things 'out'. ********* Hmm, sorry to hear about your cycle troubles. I have discovered, for ME, that by following a Paleo lifestyle, it has helped me conceive the last 2 times. My husband and I had tried for 6 YEARS trying to get pregnant and were told by our fertility specialist that an IVF would be our only way of conceiving because DH had so few 'swimmers'. There was no way we could afford that, so we just figured we were not going to be having any more. I switched us from the SAD to Primal--I had found Marks Daily Apple and with in 3 months of starting Primal, boom! We were pregnant. I followed Primal straight thru my pregnancy and had a perfectly healthy 7 pound baby boy, born at 39 weeks. We decided that we wanted him to have a sibling, and since he was born I had discovered Paleo and the Whole30 and I started following it, doing my first whole 30 in August/September of last year. My period after my first one was 8 days long and really messy. In January, I really dialed it in again and I discovered mid February that I was expecting again. Pretty amazing for people and a woman who will be 46! when this one is born. NO fertility treatments either! My son was born in '11 when I was 42. Also, I know from experience that stressing over not being pregnant can really mess things up as well. Try to relax (easier said than done!) and if you want to chat Mrs.Smith, feel free to drop me a note.Don't give up hope and see if you can work on getting those good carbs in. Besides squash and sweet potatoes, and some fruits, what about some of the more sugar heavy veggies like carrots and cucumbers?**I should add that it was a good 3 years between being done with the fertility specialist and conceiving.** ********************* I will tell you baltomom that eating this way--primal/paleo/whole 30 WILL straighten out your hormones. My husband and I tried for 6 years with no success. We had 4 failed IUI's (last one in 2007) with the result being that our only hope was IVF, and my husband being told that he was very much lacking in 'that' department. We certainly couldn't afford IVF so we figured God had other plans for us. Time went on, and I discovered Traditional diets and Nourishing Traditions led to our discovering Primal in 2010. We followed it religiously and after 3 months I discovered I was pregnant! lo and behold! And now, we have a happy, crazy little 4 year old boy :-) Personally, I would keep on keeping on with Whole 30, Paleo and the like and I think you will have success having another kiddo--it worked for us. SarahRoseyCheeks
SpinSpin - I thank you so very much for sharing your story with us. It always makes things so much easier to know we aren't alone. Husband and I have been together 7 years, married 2. We took precautions not to get pregnant or first two years together and then began a "what will be will be" mentality. Nothing happened. When we got married we decided not to really try until we got through our first year of marriage. Once we reached a year we began actively trying. Timing ovulation, BBT every morning, ect. In May of 2014 I was diagnosed with HPV and stage 1 cervical cancer. I had a fantastic gynecologic oncologist who was able to remove the carcinoma and I have had one of two mandatory clean paps so far. I go for my second in August. Meanwhile, my husband was told during puberty that he had a chromosomal disorder called Klinefelter's Syndrome and is only 20% capable of fathering children without assistance (testosterone therapy, IVF, etc.) It looks like as of October 2014 our choice is IVF with the hopes they can extract enough viable sperm from Husband. Part of the reason I began my Whole 30 (now on day 23) was to prepare my body to be the best possible vessel to create life. I am so glad to know that in doing this I am balancing my hormones and regulating my cycle. Husband is not taking part in this with me. He is not a "dieter". While he has seen the many positive changes that have happened to me he does not feel it is right for him. I would love to see the possibility that a Whole 30 could really optimize that 20% chance. He is adopted and believes in "paying it forward" but I am desperate to carry my own child. If God intends otherwise then of course I will heed His plans but I won't stop trying to make my body the best it can be with the hopes it will one day carry our child. Link to comment
MrsStick
SarahRoseyCheeks - You should really try to get your hubby in on a Whole 30 with you...you'd be surprised the changes it can make in his body. His 20% chances might go up if his body is nourished and not full of systemic inflammation. Link to comment
SarahRoseyCheeks
Mrs. Stick! He and I actually discussed it last night. The first real discussion we've had about him doing a Whole 30 himself. He asked a lot of questions and I gave him my book so he can start seeing for himself the ways it can (and will) benefit him! He promised to think about really committing to it. I have no doubt at all that he could do it. He is a resilient man when he wants to be and I have seen him do WAY harder things in out 8 years together than simply not eating bread or cheese. He has this crazy theory that men nearing their 40s (which by the way...he'll only be 32 in July) should not eat red meat because it is harmful to their cardiovascular system. I really wanted to laugh. I love that man but come on this is coming from someone who binges on honey roasted peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at 1am! Someone I have personally seen polish off an entire pizza himself. An entire box of brownies on his own...I am thinking in the long run this is WAY worse for your cardiovascular system...not to mention your sugar intake...processed carb overload!!! I pulled up Tom's profile here and showed him some of the benefits to incorporating red meat in to your diet but that it always alongside VEGGIES! and GOOD fats! And that there are a ton of protein choices that are not solely limited to red meat. I think he will be downright shocked at what he was really eating that whole time and I really think he's coming around. Fingers crossed! Link to comment
Kage
Please take you folate. Please, please be taking it now. Yes you are getting a decent amount from food BUT it is too important to risk it. Having more than the recommended daily dose does will not harm you. The other pre-natal vitamins may not be required with a healthy diet but the folate is far too important. Link to comment

Which is why I told her to discuss with her doctor and to make the decision herself. This isn't something we can decide for her, it's for her family and her doctor to determine the best course of action. Link to comment
Moderators ultrarunnergirl Posted May 8, 2015 Moderators Share Posted May 8, 2015 Don't forget, folic acid and folate are different things. There's some eye-opening reading on the subject and how fortification of foods with folic acid came about. I'm not a medical professional, but the benefits vs. the risks are worth learning about. http://chriskresser.com/folate-vs-folic-acid/ Link to comment

I was also going to recommend Chris Kresser for more info on folate and folic acid. It's much more complex (and interesting) than you would know from conventional wisdom. In fact it sounds like Kresser's info on fertility and pregnancy in general is well worth a look. I wish it had been around when I was having babies! Link to comment
GinaM
Hi Ladies, Hope you don't mind me chiming in. My cycle was pretty weird this past month. I'm on day 32 of whole30 and I plan to continue for as along as I feel. I had a "period" after only 2 weeks and now cramping again like its coming. I also did not feel ovulation pain like I usually do. I am wondering what's going on and am scared I"m doing more harm to my body than good. I'm not ready to quit yet and hoping that my hormones just need to adjust to my new eating lifestyle. I'm making sure I eat enough fat just in case. Anything else I should be doing in order to ensure my body has enough of what it needs? I've been doing p90x as well and lost 7 pounds so far. Link to comment
BeantownDiva715
Hi Everyone- Hope you don't mind me joining/bumping this thread... I cannot tell you what it meant to read some of your stories, thank you all SO much for sharing. SpinSpin you especially are giving me MAJOR hope!! We are TTC, I am just south of the big 4-0 and was told in March that it was basically going to be impossible for me to get pregnant, that my eggs were no good. DH's troops are fine, though is is about to turn 50, he has a 17year old daughter from his previous marriage. I read SO much about the possibilities of Whole30/Primal regulating hormones and was already optimistic but reading all of your stories and thoughts helps a great deal! It's been tough! SarahRosey, I will tell you I am taking a chewable prenatal bc big "horse size" pills (which prenatals often are) are not something I can take due to a physical restriction. In the interest of FULL disclosure, there is a trace amount of sugar in them. For anyone that wants to tell me I am not really doing the Whole30 because of the negligible amount of sugar I consume (and it's about the same as I would find in a compliant kombucha) in the vitamins that will make me and (hopefully soon) my baby healthier, that's fine but we will have to agree to disagree. As the Whole30 book says God > W30 in terms of taking communion, to me fertility health > just about anything! The brand I take is Rainbow Light Precious Prenatal gems. Sounds like a kids cartoon! I've been taking them for about 9-10 months, was on a script chewable previously, these were just easier and I can get them at Whole Foods. I just finished Day6 (It's late here!) and am dealing with some nasty bloating issues (please see my other thread in this forum) but am feeling hopeful that the Whole30 and continuing many of the good behaviors I am learning here will help us conceive! I hope everyone will keep posting as they are able/inclined. Oh, I'm getting some odd spotting right now, which is not really normal for my (usually irregular) period but I am hoping it's implantation spotting!! I am also seeing an acupuncturist for some extra help. Sending light and good thoughts to all of you! Bean Link to comment
MrsStick
I have to say that now that I understand aversions/morning sickness, I definitely want to encourage people at the beginning of a pregnancy to take some sort of folate/folic acid supplement at a minimum. I'm currently almost completely limited to white carbs (homemade GF bread with butter, mashed potatoes, GF pretzels, GF mac and cheese, etc.) and am grateful that I am getting the nutrients I need but can't stomach through my vitamin. Later on, when I no longer have these issues I'll focus on getting enough through food that the pre-natals are less important. BeanTownDiva715 - good luck. As someone who spotted from 3 days post ovulation through 16 days post ovulation, to include the night after my positive test where I was convinced that the bleeding meant I'd lost the baby...it will be stressful. I'm still pregnant though...will have my first ultrasound mid-July. It's possible to still carry if you bleed, just calm down and pray when you would rather freak out. Link to comment
BeantownDiva715
Thank you MrsStick!!!! The real struggle for me right now is the battle between keeping my hopes up and trying not to get my hopes up, if that makes any sense? We have tried to remain positive and I have really tried to "put it out into the Universe" that we WILL get pregnant, but my period arriving every month has been devastating, to be honest!! I am now towards the end of my cycle and 12 days post ov and am sitting on my hands to keep from peeing on a stick We had a bit of a "BabyMoon" at the end of May so.... we shall see! My acupuncturist said on Monday it didn't feel/sound like I was pre-menstrual. Here's hoping!!!! I am happy with the amount of greens I am consuming right now but I am thinking I will grab a folate supplement as well. I am so sorry you are dealing with the food aversions! I am thrilled and excited for you!!! Calmly yours, Bean Link to comment
MrsStick
Keep the hopes up a bit, if your accupuncturist is right then...you should know soon! Sending all kinds of prayers your way - come on, come on little bean! I totally understand the not wanting to hope but still wanting to hope thing...I found that as time went on and I didn't start bleeding heavy or passing chunks my spirits rose. No one really talks about how you can bleed during when your 'missed period' would be, just lighter. Almost everything I found online said that bleeding = not pregnant, yet here I am pregnant and I bled mostly lightly but still for 13 days while preggo. I'll be sure in a month that everything's okay with little Twig...but my body is progressing through the pregnancy so far pretty normally so I'm not too worried. Link to comment
BeantownDiva715
YES!!!!! C'mon little bean!!! Or beans... Hope everyone here had a great day today! I am so grateful for the encouragement and good thoughts! Big Mamma Bean Link to comment
