On Day 126 of Whole365 and I always get itchy after lunch

Recommended Posts

Not really for a Whole30 WITH a medical condition but I've been experiencing whole body itchiness after I eat lunch. It's strange because it only happens when I'm at work. I eat breakfast at work and no issues. I can eat the same thing at home as I do for lunch at work and nothing happens. But for about the last week, each time I eat lunch at work, I get itchy within 30 minutes. It eventually passes. I'm not allergic to anything. The meals have differed as well.

Last Thursday

-compliant chicken sausage, ingredients are chicken, pork casing, salt, pepper

-cabbage slaw with balsamic vinegar

-steamed carrots/broccoli/cauliflower

Last Friday

-BBQ steak, seasoned with salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic

-boiled carrots

Mon/Tues/Wed this week

-baked pork tenderloin, seasoned with lemon juice, pepper, garlic, salt and chives

-steamed beans and carrots

-roasted broccoli and zuchinni, seasoned with olive oil, garlic, salt, onion powder

The itchiness lasts about 20-60 minutes and then I eventually forget about it. I can eat any one of these exact meals at home without issue. I do eat lunch every day at 1:00 pm. Not sure if that factors in.

Any ideas?

Erin

I would think that if it's not the food that is triggering because you are able to eat the exact same things at home with no reaction, that you are experiencing something in your environment that is triggering.

Are you reheating your lunch at work in a microwave and not so at home? Are you eating out of a different (maybe plastic) type of container at work and not so at home? Is your office's a/c or heating on a cycle that starts at the same time you might be eating? Do you have a coworker who comes in from outside around the same time you're eating? Maybe someone is using a hand sanitizer after their lunch that is affecting you.

Doesn't sound like this is related to the food you're eating at all.  Protein, veggies and fat don't cause random, location specific itching.  ;)

Thanks guys.

I do use plastic (BPA free) containers for my work lunches and I reheat in the microwave. I use a microwave at home but don't often use plastic containers and when I do I put the items onto a plate before heating. Maybe it's the plastic/microwave combination. I have the exact same thing for lunch tomorrow so I'll put it on a plate first and see if that helps any.

As far as benefits, I found when doing my first whole30 in May 2014 that I felt TREMDOUSLY better by cutting out the processed/dairy/grain etc foods. I've never had super bad issues with food but I did have random bloating, stomach pains since as far as I can remember. I intially started the whole30 as I had lost 70 pounds by exercise and calorie counting and the pounds were slowly creeping up after I met my current boyfriend. I was able to lose around 13 pounds that first month and felt great by the end. I don't find that I sleep any better and I've never experienced the whole tiger blood thing but I liked how I felt digestion wise.

After my first whole30 I went back to normal eating habits and bloated instantly. I decided to do another 30 for July 2014. I ended up on vacation for most of August and my plans of 90% compliant food went out the window. I ate myself to death month and gained 24 pounds between August 1 and August 22 when I got home

This brought about my whole90 from September 1 to December 1. It turned out that I was leaving for a cruise on December 1 so I decided to extend from a Sept 30 to a full 90. I felt great during those months. I did really well during December. I did end up eating some non-compliant foods on the cruise (because really, who can resist) but 95% of the time I stuck to meat, veggies and the "diabetic" desserts. The cruise offered health conscious items for their sit down dinners where if you ordered three of the items (app, meal, dessert) from the list, they equalled less than 800 calories. Seems a lot for one meal but the non-healthy items would have been far worse. I always stuck to this menu and never ordered multiple items (as you could actually order 1 of everything if you wanted). I gained 9 pounds that week but I think most of it was water retention. The rest of December was mostly compliant with a little treat here and there.

I then decided that I have no breaks when it comes to food/eating unless I give myself strict guidelines and rules. So I decided on the whole365. I've lost about 10 pounds since January 1 (again a lot was water weight). (Overall since September 1, 2014, I've lost 39 pounds.) I figured if I'm already used to, it makes me feel better and I get the added bonus of weight loss (I've struggled with weight forever and have gone from just under 250lbs to currently 148 lbs) then why not. I still get bloated/gassy sometimes but that's usually if I eat too many nuts or carbs (like plantains).

People at work think I'm crazy but I don't deprive myself. I eat more now than when I was calorie counting. Since it's a lifestyle choice, and not a food reset, I do allow myself the occasional "treat" like organic dark chocolate with no added sweetening (when I can find it) or hard cider (I've found a brand where the only ingredient is Apples, no sulfites or anything). Not going to lie, I have add some organic baked potato chips and salsa. So technically these things aren't whole30 but they are made of whole30 ingredients. They don't cause me to overeat or revert to old habits so I allow them once and a while.

So I decided on the whole365.

This is why there is no such thing as the Whole365. There's Whole30 which demands complete and total compliance for 30 days.  Then there's the plan you create for yourself for the rest of your life.  WholeErin, if you will.  ;)  If you want to use the framework and then allow certain things in that are worth it to you and fit in with your life then that's great, Whole30 did what it was designed to do! :)

I know that it's not technically a compliant whole30 as I've eaten things outside of the guidelines (SWYPO if you will) but I don't agree wholly with that. Because the whole idea of SWYPO is that it's food that causes you to revert to old eating habits where you scarf down the entire bag/item. If I feel like something salty and crunchy but can't get plantains then I grab the organic potato chips (sometimes regular potato, sometimes sweet tater) where the ingredients are potato, olive oil and salt. I pair with a compliant salsa and only eat the suggested serving size. Craving fulfilled and overeating crisis averted. I don't think anyone would be able to stay 100% compliant forever, so I will agree with your WholeErin as you suggested. But when people ask, I do say that I eat a whole30 diet as it's 99.9999999% compliant. For example, I've had one of said chocolate bars and one evening where I had a cider since January 1.Trying to get into the specifics when people ask is a lot more complicated so when I say whole30 and they say "what's that" I can give the gist without needing to explain that I'm 99% whole30 with the very small percentage of paleo/whole food treat thrown in. I don't eat this way as a way to reset bad habits and dependencies. Instead, it's a way that I can control my weight and make myself feel better. Adding the occasional whole food made of compliant ingredients is just my take to make it WholeErin :)

Microwaved my lunch on a paper plate today, ate about 45 minutes ago and my nose is slightly itchy. I'm wondering if maybe it has to do with the pepper I used from the work kitchen. I have one more lunch of the same items (I made all 5 lunches for this week on Sunday). I'll try with nothing added and without the plastic and see if anything comes up differently.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll update with how it goes.

Erin - is there any new carpeting in that joint?   Indoor/outdoor type carpet that's been recently installed?   The glues from said carpeting can cause that kind of reaction.   How about new carpeting anywhere in the building?

Dang, it makes me wonder what's in or above the ceiling panels.

There's carpeting everywhere lol. Nothing new though. It can get dusty. I just wasn't sure as it's only for a short period of time right after lunch. It didn't last nearly as long today after not microwaving IN the plasic container so I'm hoping that's it. It's just a very strange reaction :P

Itching indicates histamine, histamines build up in left overs very quickly especially meats.  Perhaps you cook and eat your meats more quickly for home meals and at work are using leftovers--and maybe they are not stored in a very cold fridge?  Because I have a lot of issues with histamine and allergies I have to cook meat and freeze it immediately in serving sizes.   I unfreeze and eat each portion as needed.

Histamine is all about accumulation.  Your work enviroment could have several sources that each add a bit and then you get slightly overloaded and get the itching.

Thanks, Annc3333!

That's an amazing answer and makes sense. I tend to cook my lunches on Sunday for the week. I've stopped microwaving in the plastic container and using the salt/pepper at work and noticed it's gotten better but it also coincided with fresher lunches as I've been bringing dinner leftovers the next day as I've been busy and haven't had the meal prep time on Sundays.
