Sweet potato - veg? Carb intake?

Recommended Posts

Does sweet potato count to my veggie intake??

Does it matter if I don't eat starchy veg all day?

Looking at my meals now, especially since cutting down on fruit, I barely eat potatoes, sweet potatoes or fruit, is there a time when I should think it is not enough? How will I know?

Yep, sweet potato counts towards your veggie intake, no you don't have to eat starchy veg all day--that would depend on your activity level. I try and eat 1 serving of a starchy veg--carrots, potato, sweet potato, beets, turnips, parsnips a day. I rarely if ever eat fruit, usually it is a few berries or apple chunks in a salad or halved grapes in salad, and I still feel good. I do have a bit more starchy veg right before and during my period. Course, I am one of those 'nutty' people who eats up to 12 cups of veg a day, mixed between cooked and raw :-) so I get plenty of carbs in my diet.

All day?

I think what Tom meant is if you go without eating starchy veggies altogether, you are likely to suffer low energy and feel bad, not that one must eat starchy veggies all day long.

lcs75, if you forego carb dense foods, you may experience a dip in moods and/or energy. Many women learn their bodies require an increase in starchy veg the week leading up to their periods to feel best and stave off sugar and carb cravings.

Personally, when I've toyed with deliberately going low carb, it's made me moody and hungry. I actually lose weight better when I eat a significant portion of starchy veg with M3. I've since read that adequate starchy veg is especially important for people with compromised thyroid and/or adrenals. And through trial and error (and living in a body predisposed to diabetes) I've learned that I do best sticking to protein, fat, and non starchy veg for M1 and M2, but sometimes with a little fruit with M2.

As with all things, your context matters here. Play around with it, experiment, and pay close attention to how different choices make you feel. Stick with what works best and know that even that may change as your context shifts and changes.

It also then really helps me not even feel like cheating too.

YES!!!  This is how I killed my sugar dragon.  Starchy veggies with at least one meal per day (and no fruit but that's not necessarily for everyone, personal context and all).
