twocorgisandacat
So I was invited to a dinner party and wanted bring along a dessert of some kind to keep myself from tearing into the dessert table. In the bulk items at Whole Foods there were these coconut date rolls. Ingredients were organic shredded coconut and dates. I even asked the guy working there if the coconut was sweetened and he said no. I am 10 days in and would hate to have to start over but they were so sweet!!! Surely if sugar was an ingredient it would be listed right? Let me know what you think.
MeadowLily
Desserts are not part of the program. The ingredients may be technically compliant...separately, but put them together and we have a SWYPO. I've seen those items at the health food store, they are incredibly sweet....so sweet that you need to brush your teeth after eating. I think you should take a nice salad with kale or spinach greens as the base. Throw in some beautiful berries with some sliced almonds thrown on top. It would be pretty but much better than dates and coconut shreds.

Moderators Tom Denham Posted May 9, 2015 Moderators Share Posted May 9, 2015 Whether there was added sugar in the coconut date rolls or not, they are a Whole30 failure. Eating dessert to withstand the temptation of eating dessert is a failure, no matter the ingredients. The thing you have to learn to do is to eat protein, fat, and veggies to withstand the temptation to eat dessert.
twocorgisandacat
So I should start over? Only took a small bite of one.

me too
I got the coconut date rolls from Whole Foods too, and thought of them as a miniature Lara bar. Wondering why Lara bars are ok and these are not?
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted January 12, 2017 Moderators Share Posted January 12, 2017 Larabars are complaint in the case of an emergency only... such as being stuck in traffic, in a blizzard, on a shipwreck. They are not approved for 'dessert', boredom eating or just because your dragon wants sugar. Yes, in an emergency, assuming that the WF date balls are compliant, they would be the same as a Lara Bar... but did you buy them in an emergency and intend to eat them in an emergency? They don't come shelf stable like Lara Bars (if what you're referring to is the 'Orb' you can buy in the bakery), so they wouldn't be a great 'throw in my bag for an actual emergency' food.... me too
I'm training for a marathon and wanted to try using them on my long run days instead of energy gels, chomps, blocks, etc since those usually contain a lot of sugar...
Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 12, 2017 Administrators Share Posted January 12, 2017 Be careful with dried fruits and nuts on a long run. They can be pretty gut disruptive which would not be what you want.
me too
Any recommendations for something to have in place of energy gels, blocks, etc?
Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 12, 2017 Administrators Share Posted January 12, 2017 Mashed sweet potato is popular. Depending on how long the run and how fat adapted you are, you may not need to constantly be refueling amidst your run.
