lauriem1966
Good morning all! Day 14! My last attempt I fell apart on day 13. Mcki - I was in Phoenix when I feel apart! Cheesecake. Honestly though....I didn't see myself making it 30 days during that attempt, but I'm so glad I did it and made it to day 13 because its made this round easier somehow. Hope you're enjoying the heat DuckMama - I hear you on the 6th sense....I woke up craving salmon. Who craves salmon? Its such freedom to be able to walk away from the old temptations. Amanda - that that chicken with the artichokes and sundried tomatoes sounds amazing! Happycarter - its not your husband's fault! We have been indoctrinated for so many years believing that egg yolks are full of cholesterol and therefore bad for us! Low-fat is NOT where its at! And Larabars - made some yesterday, so easy, and actually better than store bought. MeGa - A larabar is primarily made of dates and nuts...the ones we made yesterday were dates, almonds, cashews and coconut. Middle son is drying some bananas and apples today to make banana bread flavor and apple pie. They are very yummy but if you have a problem with sweets (like I do) best to enjoy very sparingly! Another hot day here and I so wish I could be working on the garden but my back is still feeling tight. Gah. Its hard when you have the energy and your body won't cooperate. Its usually the other way around. I have some work to do in the house as well....I've been waiting for a few months for some cabinets to be in stock at Ikea and they were finally in yesterday, so I can assemble them but I'm not really able to install them just yet. No idea what to make for dinner. I'm guessing we will be grilling since its so gorgeous out. I'm thinking hawaiian chicken skewers, coconut cauliflower rice and a salad. There we go....its a plan Have a good one everyone!
GFChris
What is a Lara bar? Have no idea Lara bars are a U.S.-based snack bar of fruit, nuts and sometimes other things that are technically Whole30 compliant. That being said, Lara bars (or the homemade equivalent) are emergency food only on a Whole30. Out on a long hike, or stuck in crazy traffic, therefore extending your time between meals to be beyond 4-5 hours would be examples of emergency situations. MeGA"gardener"
Thank you for clearing up Lara bar sounds yummy I'll put them off for sure I'm glad you like the spice rub/ marinade I use it on whole Roasters too Takes time grilling but so worth it (use 3 chickens standing on feet -like beer can chicken -in an extra large roasting pan fits on outdoor BBQ catches all the drippings) I got the stands at Job Lot You can also smush seasonings in tomato paste with oil for a more BBQ flavor bacon drippings too Sounds like you are all doing ok Enjoy this gorgeous day
Debzella
Ack! It's like I'm having one of those "food blunder" dreams, but I'm awake! First, I was looking for a way to repurpose leftover pork, and thought, "Oh, I'll make stuffed peppers." Innocent enough. I chopped up the pork and then had the brilliant idea to mix in some mashed potatoes I had in the fridge from the other day, you know, to take the place of the rice. Well, I went to taste it, and it was like my brain lit up like a pin-ball machine. What is that delicious taste…. come on… I know it….. OMG! I forgot that I had put butter and milk in the potatoes (for the rest of the family, not me)! Well, I spit it out, like the above-mentioned pinball, and clutched my heart, as I realized I just narrowly missed a catastrophic incident. Then, later, I went to the pantry to get the cashew butter, since I wasn't having pork because it had the contraband potatoes in it… and I grabbed the almond butter by mistake (which has maple sugar in it!) I literally dropped the jar like it was hot, when I realized I had the wrong one. (thank god it's plastic). Then I went into the kitchen and there was an open bottle of wine on the cupboard! WTH!?! Although it's perfectly okay that my 25 year old son would have a glass of wine on a holiday weekend…. why did he leave it where I could see it??? So, now I'm sitting in the living room, miraculously still compliant on the Whole30 program, but wondering what could possibly happen next. Is ice cream going to drop from the ceiling? Am I going to trip and fall face first into a pile of chocolate? I'm going to bed early tonight, and chances are my dreams are not going to be as scary as my day has been. Yikes! MeGA"gardener"
Debzella Glad for you you made it through without a hitch If you want to repurpose leftover pork 1. you could slice it thin, brown in oil add sliced onion cabbage and season with salt pepper add garlic and shredded carrot hot pepper flakes It's a nice change or side dish or 2. could also make a lomein for the family with leftover pea pods thinly sliced with onion and add rice noodles or capellini ginger five spice garlic Add some bone broth to sauce it up and it's a nice side for them 3. Pork is versitile or just cut up an apple onion sweet potato cinnamon alspice nutmeg ginger Sweet dreams
Jmn1962
Hi Everyone, Jeannie's friend here... Just wanted to say that you're all such a great inspiration. I've been having some significant health issues for the last several years and nobody seems to be able to help. Jeannie turned me onto the whole30 book and lifestyle. After literally reading the book in 24 hours, I'm so ready to make the whole30 commitment. Planned my meals and went to the grocery store today. Asked Jeannie a billion questions, got my husband on board, joined a forum for people starting on the 25th, soooooo now I'm ready to go. Starting tomorrow! Keep up the good work everyone and know that what you've accomplished this far is a huge inspiration. Ok......bring on those withdrawal headaches

bricky
hello everyone - day 15 today. well I don't like to boast but .... I rocked at the BBQ!!!! Not only did I not eat or drink anything non compliant - I had to serve these foods to the guest I cut up croissants and pastries, pup chocolates in bowls etc. Even joined in the lively funny conversation about who ate all the cherry riles and who really likes Turkish delight (both my favs BTW!!!). I felt so proud of myself and because I did not drink bubbly I was clear headed enough to cook a wonderful roast dinner for us (the brunch went from 11am and the last people left at around 4) - normally I am quite tipsy and take out or oven fry something or other is for dinner. MeGA - thank you for asking about Larabars - we don't have them in Oz as far as I am aware and Lauriem would lve a complete recipe if you have one please - also I hope your back is getting better - I had a pinched nerve in my lumbar spine a few months ago and also have 3 bulging discs in my cervical spine courtesy of the nursing profession so I can totally empathise with you. Amanda79 - your lime squeeze sounds fab - must remember that once summer returns - it is autumn here (fall) and the days are getting shorter and it is getting cooler (mind you our coolest winter day in Sydney is usually around 9C so we don't do too badly but it certainly is a change from our 40C+ and 100% humidity in summer!!!! Debzella - I read your post about almost slipping up - I know how you feel - I was reading a recipe somewhere yesterday about adding unsweetened coconut milk and I thought OMG - unsweetened????!!!??? - I have been using coconut cream since about Day 3 (from top of the tin in fridge) in my coffee and over the past 2 days have licked the spoon to find it tastes sweet - I thought SUGAR!!!!!! My heart skipped a beat and I rushed out the read the can (I am sure I would have done that before) and found to my great relief there was no sugar mentioned - phew - I am really enjoying this process but I think had I inadvertently done something which meant starting over I am not sure how I would react even though I am thinking of extending a little - Croatia and the swimsuit is in September!!! I have to share today's thoughts - I was standing in the kitchen and I thought "who is this person?" I have gone from one who regularly gets take away, cooks using a saucepan and packets of prepared curry sauces or Mexican to someone who enjoys being in the kitchen. I used to cook until I got to the stage of having to make separate foods for everyone - eldest son became vegetarian (I had no idea what to feed him), middle daughter suffering anorexia, youngest hating anything seasoned - so I lost my urge to cook. My husband took over and he is a great cook especially on the BBQ but that was becoming a little ho hum and unvaried. This morning - wait for it - I have the slow cooker (chicken bone broth), pressure cooker (pumpkin and leek soup) and slow cooking in the oven (Jeannie's pork). I even washed up - had not emptied the DW from yesterday and usually I would pile it up and wait but no ... today I washed it all up!!! I think my husband is finding this new person kind of ... shall I say ... a bit sexy? He seems to be more attentive. Wishing you all a great day and looking forward to reading your posts - hope we stay in touch post W30

mcki0133
Checking in again from AZ...doing a lot better today! Eggs, spinach, and half an avocado for breakfast...then we headed to the store to get more food so I didn't have to worry about eating all my friends stuff. barbeque tonight and had my compliant chicken, broccoli and olives. I'm heading back home tomorrow night so, got to plan my plane ride again but it's later in the evening...so breakfast and lunch will be good. Almost made it thru my mini vacation!! Keep on keeping on all! Thanks for the wonderful support!
jeanie793
Wonderful greetings to all of you! Busy day here, but was able to fit 3 square W30 meals even though I was out most of the day. I prepared for dining out by choosing the restaurant based on the menu and by bringing my own salad dressing. For a picnic lunch I prepared a spinach and kale salad with 2 hard boiled eggs, some walnuts and strawberries. Tessamae's dressing (the bottle is conveniently small enough for travel!). Tomorrow for our Memorial Day my family wants me to use our smoker, so, I'm smoking spare ribs, only this time I'll leave the usual sugary sauce on the side for the family. I'll use a dry rub of garlic powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, onion powder, chilli powder and sea salt. I'll baste the ribs with apple juice and water once an hour, for about 7 hours. Meanwhile I'll make some potato salad and a veggie, I think grilled cauliflower? And I'll treat myself to Kombucha in my wine glass Mmm! You all are cracking me up! I too had a freak-out with food today!! I made (standard) chicken fingers to bring for the family on our picnic and when I was packing them away after cooking them I licked my fingers! Arghhhhh! I totally freaked out! Then totally laughed about it. How hilarious! Thanks for welcoming my friend Jean. Hi Jean! Total surprise to see your post! Good luck and be sure to reach out here if your forum isn't as active as this one! This is s great bunch. I feel so fortunate to be part of it. Ok folks-onward to the 1/2 way mark! Roar! CCGraves
Hello! Sounds like everyone is doing awesome!!! You're all keeping me motivated. I have to say that yesterday was my hardest day; probably because it just kinda creeped up on me. It was the first day I actually felt like quitting but after I ate my breakfast I felt much better & then same with lunch. I must've been getting hungry. There was no way I was undoing 14 days of hard work!! Now on day 15!!! And I'm glad I stayed strong, phew! Made it thru another weekend. Great job everyone!! amanda79
Good morning, friends! Good to see you, Jean! Good luck! My turn! I totally licked some pancake batter off my finger this morning (making them for the girls) then ran to the sink to wash my mouth out. So glad DH wasn't there to see. He would think I've lost it! Day 16 here. I have a semi-confession. I bought a giant bag of sunflower seeds Friday night and have been snacking on them quite a bit this weekend. Even though they are compliant, they are a food without breaks for me. I could eat them all day. I've put the bag up on top of the fridge and will do my best to forget about it. I have all my meals planned and will head to the grocery store today. I probably should head to the office, but I don't wanna! Think I'll stay here and do some house work, some cooking, and some service club work so I don't feel like a complete bum. Everyone have a great day! lauriem1966
Day 15 - halfway there!!! I think I am pmsing because I was starving all day yesterday. ALL DAY. I ate too much fruit in the end (3 servings) and wow, it was making me want sweets. I should have had smaller meals to satiate my hunger instead, but we were so busy, it was just convenience. So far today, I feel okay. Welcome to Jmn! Bricky - there are tons of recipes on the internet for the different flavors, but basically this is it: 1 cup dates 1 cup nuts Process in food processor, line a loaf pan with parchment, press the mixture in and refrigerate. I had a tough time doing them in my food processor (my son has been making them for a while, this was my first time) and he said he soaks the nuts first, for at least 8 hours. He is vegan, soaks all nuts and seeds, I don't really know why, something to do with phytates I believe? Anyway - doing a batch today with macadamia nuts, coconut and dates. I also soak the dates for about 20 minutes, makes them more pliable. You can use other kinds of dried fruit as well, like apples, bananas, in addition to the dates. My son made apple pie ones with dried apple (that he dried himself), cinnamon and nutmeg. I always carry one in my purse because I'd rather eat that in an emergency than hitting the nearest drive thru. Since starting whole30, I have had 2 bars (plus a tiny taste every time he makes them, usually every 4-5 days). My little dog Daisy has an ultrasound this afternoon. Vet said if her enzyme levels are not down in 6 weeks to do an ultrasound, but I'm not waiting. I hope and pray there is no tumor, but I have a terrible feeling there is. She has lost so much weight, and last night she had the shakes a few times while sleeping. I am trying to stay positive but its hard.
jeanie793
CCGraves- good for you toughing it out. I've noticed that when I haven't eaten in 4-5 hours, I also get a little crabby. We need to be refueled I think! Amanda- Lol I can relate ;-) it's so funny how we don't want that kind of food anymore! Maybe extra water today will help wash some of the salt from the seeds indulgence? Laurie- never tried making a larabar but it sounds so easy. I just might give it a try later this week. Hang in there with your puppy. Wishing good thoughts for you. Is anyone drinking or using fruit juice? I've been too paranoid to use any !!! But today with smoking ribs I need to mop them every hour. I usually use a full cup of apple or cranberry. So instead i used fresh pineapple juice, 1/4 cup orange juice from concentrate (ugh) and water. For the work week ahead i was tempted to not prepare anything for breakfast. I thought to myself, Oh I can handle this, I can wing it. Uh no!!! Good thing I listened to my inner angel and not the devil. I prepared an egg frittata with onions, red bell pepper, chiracha sauce, and some leftover pork. Plus 1/4 cup of almond meal. I'm dying to weigh myself!
Jmn1962
Had a good day today..... Meal1: scrambled eggs, mushrooms, red peppers, broccoli, and some strawberries. Used coconut oil and ghee for preparing the meal. Meal 2: protein salad (chicken, green grapes, celery, toast almonds and mayo) served over a bed of greens and an apple. Meal 3: walnut crusted pork tenderloin, arugula, and balsamic vinaigrette. Feeling pretty good today.....now I just need to make it through the evening (historically my most difficult time of the day with regards to eating and cravings). But tonight I will prevail! init2winit
Loving everyone's posts!! Just finished M3 of Day 15! Woo hoo! Half way through and feeling really great. I'm not sure if I weigh any less but man do I feel good. The energy I have during my HIIT workouts is through the roof and my complexion has really cleared up. So glad everyone made it through the holiday weekend! I don't have a husband or child to consider so I tip my hat to everyone who's doing this in a house full of people that are not along for the ride. My dog is very supportive! Did my shopping for the week yesterday and today and prepped meals today. Really getting in the groove of this thing now! I got some compliant Applegate Hot dogs and had them with mustard and fermented sauerkraut for lunch along with some sautéed potatoes and peppers and roasted broccoli. I will never eat regular sauerkraut again!! The fermented stuff is where it's at. Side note-- I LOVE roasting veggies. Anything I can roast, I do. I did some parsnips and butternut squash that I seasoned w/ cinnamon and a little ginger. Delicious! Keep it up everyone!!! We've got this! jeanie793
So, I smoked ribs today for 7 hours, made some with standard bbq sauce and left a 1/2 slab with just the rub for me since I'm the only one doing W30. Told everyone at the table where the unsauced ribs were. Wouldn't you know when I finally got to sit down to dinner, most of the dry rub only ribs were just about gone! Geez 7 freakn hours and I only got a couple ribs and the only leftovers had sugary bbq sauce! hmmmm! Lesson learned, make more W30 ribs or keep a portion for myself! Onward to day 16! Arin
I haven't posted in a few days but, surprisingly (to me) I'm still on track! This weekend was tough. I was so busy that I skipped a few meals. But I've eaten several meals out and remained compliant. I've also survived several of my kids pizza nights, and much more easily than I withdrew thought. The craziest thing I've experienced is that I decided to go back to coffee. Before this I could only drink it very sweetened as a vanilla latte. I'm now drinking coffee with canned coconut milk and cinnamon and I love it! That's crazy to me. I made nom nom's cracklin' chicken for dinner and it was delicious. Glad to see everyone is doing well!
Debzella
Wrapping up day 15. I had my favorite sautéed spinach and eggs for breakfast. Then I went to the outlet mall with my daughter. She's a good one to go shopping with while on my Whole30, because our treat has always been a black Starbucks coffee. She never eats fast food or mall treats, so no temptations there. We did shop all afternoon though, and I didn't eat lunch first, so I brought an apple, some almonds, and a Larabar. For dinner, we had a cook-out, with chicken on the grill. We also grilled a ton of veggies! Eggplant, portobellos, asparagus, and bell peppers. I roasted sweet potatoes in the oven. While I was shopping, my son made a marinade for the chicken with lemon, olive oil and honey. He wanted to surprise us, not realizing that I'm not eating honey right now. So, I chiseled another chicken breast out of a block of frozen ones that I had in the freezer, and marinated it in a compliant marinade that I made… olive oil, red wine vinegar, compliant dijon mustard and salt and pepper. Whew! Dodged another bullet. I'm enjoying reading everyone's meals. Such good food! Jeanie… the smoked ribs sound absolutely incredible! I hope everybody's day was Whole30 wonderful! Debzella
Okay…. I'm an idiot. I just re-read yesterday's post, and I used RED WINE (!!!) vinegar in my chicken marinade!! Anybody know if there's really alcohol in it or is it in name only?? I feel like if there was alcohol in such a cheap source, that teen-agers would be drinking it behind the bleachers at prom. Also, it was the store-brand $1.12 bottle, not an artisan brand from the Champagne region, so I'm thinking, no alcohol in there. But… if the Whole30 powers-that-be proclaim that yes, red wine vinegar is alcohol, then I submit, and will start over. Why? Because the days don't matter anymore. I like eating this way and I feel younger and better than I have in years. So, 30 days… 45 days… 90 days…. it doesn't matter. I like this way of eating. So, moderators… what's the verdict? Jeffrey17
Happy Day 16. This weekend was tough but I made it through. I was surrounded by great beer and it was so tempting to have one. I made the Whole 30 mayo and put it right to use in potatoe salad and a horseradish dip. Also made baba gonoush with cut up veggies for dipping. Everyone liked that. Hard to believe we're all half way done and on the other side. Sweet.
