sardines

Recommended Posts

I love sardines straight out of the tin with a fork. I love the ones that are packed in olive oil, and I love them with a dap of mustard.I also like to make fish cakes out of them. Don't de-bone them, just eat them as they are right out of the can. The bones are soft, and are good for you.

I watched a colleague put a can of sardines on a salad while sitting at his desk at work. He ate them as his lunch. That inspired me to purchase and eat my first can of sardines ever at roughly 50 years of age. They weren't bad. I still eat more tuna, but like sardines and have them occasionally. I think eating them on a salad might be a good way to start.

A salad with a variety of textures would be a good way to start. That way you won't notice the bones (which are soft) just so much. I've been eating sardines straight out of the tin with a fork for as long as I can remember... I think they smell stronger than they actually taste which is probably what puts people off trying them.

You *can* get tinned sardine fillets which might also be a way to introduce yourself to them, but they are much more expensive plus the bones are full of calcium and particularly good for you.

I actually enjoy them more than tuna now.

I do them on salads because it's easy and portable (always have a can on hand at work).

For a real treat make them Well Fed 2 style, she has a good recipe on pan frying them.

Finally, they are extra tasty mashed up with homemade mayo.

I think they have a nicer texture than tuna also, I find tuna a bit.....dry?  Sardines have a nice oil content and because you get to have the skin and the bones, you are giving yourself a powerhouse of nutrients!  Mixing them with homemade mayo and some lime juice is a good start!

The easiest way to start is to find boneless and skinless sardines. I didn't and I totally gagged the first time I tried to eat them. I eat them now a couple times a week, more when I'm eating better. I love to quickly pan fry them in CO so they get a little crispy and then eat with sauerkraut (add lemon) or on a salad.

I agree with UltraRunnerGirl above....if you are squeamish at all about them try the pan fried sardines recipe from Well Fed 2.  It requires a bit of prep with the marinating step, but is so worth it.

Once you get used to the taste and texture you can try them on their own, right out of the tin.  I love the ones that are smoked in cayenne pepper olive oil (I found these at my local Whole Foods).  They are quick and easy and so satisfying.
