I am looking for a good protein snack alternative for after my workouts, preferably a snack not a meal. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted May 25, 2015 Moderators Share Posted May 25, 2015 Post workout is recommended to be protein and optionally starchy vegetables, no fat because it slows absorption and you're trying to get the protein and carbs to the muscles as quickly as possible. Chicken breast or tuna canned in water and sweet potato are popular choices. Egg whites would also work for the protein portion. Other starchy vegetables could be subbed for the sweet potato -- pumpkin, butternut squash, root vegetables. Personally when I do egg whites for post workout I buy the highest quality liquid egg whites I can find because my eggs are expensive and I hate ditching the yolk. The point of buying nice pastured eggs is that the yolks are more nutrient dense than conventional eggs and full of great omega fatty acids and micronutrients. As far as I know, the whites, from a nutrition standpoint, are less impacted from pastured vs conventional. If it's only one or two egg whites that I need, I'll crack the good ones in the fridge (and feed the yolks to my dogs), but if I need egg white in a higher quantity then I tend to buy liquid whites.
