Kombucha

Unrelated to the "can I have" portion of Kombucha but more to the taste of it...I've had the Synergy Trilogy and found it to have a strange taste. I eventually got used to it but it was a little weird. Is the weird taste the kombucha itself or maybe I'm just not a fan of ginger in this way? I'd love to try more flavours but they're pretty expensive in my area so if they all taste the same I'm not sure I want to spend the money lol

Weird in what way? They are more of a tart/tangy cider taste than a super sweet soda pop taste, for sure.  Some people find the taste of them quite vinegary which is pretty normal.  They can be an acquired taste.  In order to get around the exorbitant cost, you could consider brewing your own!  :)

Where I am we pay $5 for 16oz.  I can brew my own for about 20 cents for the same amount.  ;)

Thanks, ladyshanny. That's about the same price here. I've only found the no sugar added ones at Goodness Me (smaller Whole Foods style store) and they're around $5 a bottle. I guess it would be the tart/tangy taste I'm referring to. I love cider so I'm not sure if it's that but it's a bit of a strange hit you kinda hard at first taste lol. Once I sort of force down the first few sips I get used to it and it's ok. I have found that I can't sit and drink the whole bottle though (like I could with pop or juice) and I tend to drink like 1/2 cup (not glass but actual measurement) at a time. It's been almost 18 months since I stopped all pop and switched to carbonated water but I can drink those no problem. I don't think it has to do with the lack of sugary-ness (like pop or juice) as I love vinegary tastes.

Maybe I'll just have to pick up a flavour that has no ginger in it. That will tell me whether it's ginger that I don't really like or if it's the kombucha itself. I've never looked into doing it myself but maybe I shall. I've been looking for ways to get more fermented/probiotics as I still experience gas/bloating a lot but I'm not a huge fan of sauerkraut so I've been limited in my choices.

Thanks again for the suggestion :D

1/2 cup at a time is great for a starter dose of kombucha. Some people have digestive distress if they drink too much at a time. I like to mix mine about 1/2 and 1/2 with mineral water, in part because my home-brew doesn't get bubbly enough, but also because I like a little lighter flavor. You might give that a try.

What tea do you use as a base? I use Twinnings English Breakfast tea and the initial brew is super fizzy. I did a secondary with puréed strawberries, lime juice and ginger the other day and it was so fizzy it exploded like a giant pink volcano when I opened the bottle...which was not so wonderful for my white blinds in the kitchen, but deliciously fizzy for my mouth. LOL.

I usually use oolong. I think my issue is that I do a pretty low-sugar brew and keep it in a widemouth container. Trying some anaerobic options for 2nd ferment to correct this, but not too worried about it. Thanks for the tip!  :)

  • 1 month later...

Finally had a chance to pick up a different flavour and found out that it is indeed the ginger taste that I don't like (referring to my first post above). I picked up a Synergy Grape today and it's great. Now I'm excited to try other ginger-less flavours :D

Sheena, I find the same too lol. I rarely drink anymore and weigh 100 pounds less than my previous college-aged drinking self, so it takes very little for me to get a buzz. I tend to only drink about half a cup with lots of ice when I do drink it, so that I don't get the full on alcohol effects.
