Day 4- bloody stool

HELP! I am on Day 4, and so far, I've felt really great, and haven't had too many of the issues I read in the different phases that could happen, aside from some irritability today. BUT THEN.. This afternoon, my stomach was a little achy, and wasn't sure if it was due to my workouts this week, but when I went to the bathroom, there was definitely blood in my stool and when I wiped. It was a bright red. I tried to look up what could cause this, but was seeing a ton of conflicting reviews.

Here is what I've had this week so far, with some variations.

Breakfast- All week, except today I had the frittata from the cook book, and this morning, I had just scrambled eggs with avocado and a banana.

Lunch- Dinner left overs

Dinner- I have had pork chops with arugula and homemade apple sauce, with asparagus. OR ground turkey, over speghetti squash with or without homemade sauce, a side of mushrooms and green beans sauteed. Tonight I had a side of broccoli, cauliflower and carrots tossed in coconut oil.

I was also having a fruit with lunch, either grapes, or an apple, and if I was still hungry at dinner, I would add an apple.

I am eating big portions, and not feeling hungry, definitely feeling sated.

Another thing, when I still ate things like dairy and wheat, after I would eat certain foods, my stomach would go haywire making crazy gurgling noises. Up until yesterday, this hadn't been happening, but I just finished dinner, and it is going on again.

Am I going to have to cut more foods out of my diet for the remainder of the time? Is this normal? HELP!

THANKS!

Please understand that no one here is a doctor, we cannot give you any kind of medical diagnosis. This might be the kind of thing you want to discuss with a doctor, especially if it continues. This isn't normal.

That said, my initial reaction was to wonder if perhaps it might be hemorrhoids?  Have you had any other digestive issues that might contribute to that -- diarrhea or constipation?

Until you figure out what's going on, it's hard to know if you need to cut other foods out of your diet. Definitely keep track of what you're eating, whether you do it here online or just in a notebook or a Word document on your computer or whatever works for you, and track any symptoms you notice, so maybe you can figure out correlations between eating something, and then having problems.

Yep, again I'm not a medical expert, but with a son who passed blood regularly as a tot I know that the general rule of thumb is that the brighter the blood the fresher it is - ie. it has not had to travel from anywhere within the digestive system, so I'd agree with Shannon's thoughts that it might be hemorrhloids, or perhaps a small anal fissure, both of which are very common (although not as a result of Whole30 specifically).

An anal fissue will generally heal on it's own, but if you're overly concerned make yourself an appointment with your Doctor just to ease your mind.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Bright red = very recently lost (ie, when you cut yourself). Dark brown or black = old, happened further up/longer ago, is more concerning. That's my no-medical-training opinion. ;)

  • 4 weeks later...

Just wanted to drop by and say that I had the same think happen to me-- one time on day 3 or 4 I had a small amount of mucous containing a streak of frank red blood on the TP when I wiped.

I am also not a doctor, but I am a veterinarian, and the frank red blood is from the colon or rectum- so the very last parts of the digestive tract. I personally didn't have any itchiness or pain that would indicate a hemorrhoid. I chalked it up to a teeny bit of inflammation in my colon from rebalancing my healthy and unhealthy gut bacteria…it only happened once and hasn't happened again.

I started taking a probiotic and drank kombucha for a couple days--- now I'm on day 9 and developed a yeast infection, which is only my second one ever, the last one being 18 years ago…not sure if it is still my body trying to get things back on track and rebalancing the good and bad bacteria and yeast or if the probiotics and kombucha contributed….none-the-less that is resolving with monistat so I am going to chalk this all up to good changes and stick with the plan.
