Migraines and Supplementing...

Recommended Posts

So I started The Whole 30 with the hopes that my migraines would go away, or at least be less. They have definitely have been less and I've been headache free since day 1! I am day 22 right now and yesterday I had my first migraine, with the aurora and everything. I felt defeated and depressed. I did take some ibuprofen and rested with essential oils. I was able to function. The pain wasn't as intense which I was grateful for. I also took magnesium that I had. I didn't have to take my maxalt, which I find is a win and it wasn't intense or life effecting like my others have been. I know I'm only on day 22 and I honestly have not desire to stop and hope to continue pass 30 days. My question is... Can I supplement with magnesium daily? To see if will help? I'm reading the new Whole30 book and there is a section on supplements but I haven't got there yet. Any other suggestions on helping with headaches/migraines? My are hormonal and I get them a week before my period.

The food I eat is rich in magnesium, but I still take a magnesium supplement every night. Many of us do. I met with a functional medicine doctor for the first time yesterday and, despite all my magnesium consumption through food and supplements, she gave me an injection of magnesium. I slept much better last night. :)

Another option is topical magnesium oil, which is readily absorbed through the skin. You can buy this at health food stores, or for a fraction of the cost make your own by dissolving magnesium flakes in filtered water, store in a small glass spray bottle. Initially when you use this you will probably notice a stinging sensation when you apply it, but this lessens over time.
