Day 9 of Whole30

Hi, I'm on Day 9. It's going pretty well. This is my second Whole 30. I did one about a year ago, it wasn't bad. Haven't been feeling great, so I thought I would do another Whole30 to clean things up and eat a little better. I've already noticed less inflammation. I find, though, that I am waking up really hungry in the mornings since starting Whole30. I'm a 5am weekday runner, so I prefer not to eat (not getting up any earlier than necessary) before I run. I also run long on Saturday's and don't eat before I run (if less than 12 miles). My energy levels/speed for my runs have been ok. I am noticing a mid afternoon slump (such as now).

I have a couple of questions though, I've always been a "counter". Either of my calories/macros or from my days as a Weight Watchers member counting points. I know what my daily activity calorie burn is, because I wear a HRM. Should I be concerned with my calorie intake during the Whole 30? I still find myself writing down/tallying my calories each afternoon. I also worry about consuming too much fat, like from oils. Should this be an issue?

Please stop counting and just focus on nourishing your body properly with good food.

If you want you can either log your meals here, or create a written journal on food, feelings, energy levels etc.  We discourage counting and measuring of any kind here.  We DO encourage in you learning your body's hunger cues - rather than - the amount of "points" you are consuming.

Are you eating pre-work outs or post workouts?  Generally you should eat something before your workout - even if it's just a handful of olives and a boiled egg. This is just to signal to your body that you are up, and should be prepared to release energy stores.

We expect you to learn to appreciate and enjoy fat when you complete a Whole30. Your worrying that you might be consuming too much makes me concerned that you are not genuinely entering into the process and getting the real benefits of doing a Whole30. You should not be counting calories. You probably should be logging your meals and asking for feedback on what you are eating. My guess is that you are not eating enough.

Our meal planning template calls for a pre- and post-workout meal in addition to three basic meals. If you want to worry about calculating something, worry about how to make sure you are eating at least the minimum called for in three basic meals plus the amount of food called for in pre- and post-workout meals whether you eat them on schedule or not. Your mid-afternoon slump may mean that you are not getting enough nourishment.

Waking up really hungry suggests you should be experimenting with eating something before running. Start really small and see how it goes.
