gkainz
First post ... yesterday was day 14 on whole30 ... for dinner I had steamed spaghetti squash, shrimp and cauliflower (blended into a pseudo white sauce) for faux fettucini alfredo ... about an hour later had massive sweats and intestinal discomfort. This morning I woke up with my whole left side tender to the touch with what I assume to be an inflammed colon ... I've had all the above foods before (but separately) and have not experienced these symptoms. I have prior history of diverticulitis. While the pain felt the same, my diverticulitis was a very localized pain, whereas this was vertical from waist to ribcage. The pain has subsided as the day goes on, so I'm not horribly concerned about it, but really curious. On a positive note, my joint aches and pains appear to be starting to subside. The flip side is my wife says I've not been very pleasant to live with the last 2 weeks! Thanks! Greg
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted June 11, 2015 Moderators Share Posted June 11, 2015 Did you by chance end up eating much more cauliflower than you might have before? Either in that meal, or if you'd eaten it over the course of a few meals? I know that I one time cooked up cauliflower and some other cruciferous vegetable, maybe brussel sprouts, and ate them several meals in a row. I ended up wishing my insides would just go ahead and explode and get it over with, it was so painful. I'm good with any cruciferous vegetables sometimes, but eating too many of them in too short a time is really not good. If it's not that, I'm not sure what to tell you, but I hope you feel better soon.
gkainz
I had less cauliflower with this meal than typical (we've made cauliflower soup before in this same form and I've had a big bowl of it without incident), and this is the first time I've eaten cauliflower in the 14 days ... and no other cruciferous vegetables in the prior 14, either. This was not gas - at least not like I know gas... yeah, I've struggled with gas that feels like intestinal cramps or convulsions, etc most times horizontally along the waistline, whereas this was vertical and painful to external pressure/touch. Administrators ladyshanny Posted June 11, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 11, 2015 Spaghetti squash upsets my stomach dreadfully. Bloating, pain, the whole works. I also end up feeling like I swallowed a brick shortly after eating it. No other squash does this to me. Possible?
gkainz
It's possible that it's the spaghetti squash ... we last had it maybe a month ago but then was with homemade tomato sauce and ground buffalo. I don't recall those symptoms ... but my "normal" (honestly - the normal that drove me to Whole30) was intestinal distress after just about any and every meal ... I think I'm going to avoid the spaghetti squash for the duration just as a precaution.
gkainz
Well, the mystery is no longer a mystery ... full blown bout of diverticulitis made itself VERY known on Friday. Feeling on the mend yesterday and today, so I can now say it wasn't the spaghetti squash or cauliflower sauce. In hindsight, I had nuts every day for at least a week prior to the blow up, so I'm quite sure they are the cause. On a positive note, had a blood test earlier in the week (unrelated to Whole30) and my cholesterol and triglycerides, while still high, are lower than they've ever been since 2000 (earliest records I've kept).
