Day 17 and my pants are tighter :(

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling frustrated today. I have stuck to the program religiously, sugar cravings are gone, and I'm sleeping better ... but I feel like I am gaining weight!!!

My jeans felt so tight this morning I could barely button them. I'm exercising daily (not a new thing for me, I've always been a regular exerciser) and following the meal templates so I'm not overeating, at least according to the plan, although it's a lot more food than I am used to eating. I cut my fruit back to one serving a day in week two. I stopped eating nuts at the end of week two. I no longer drink coconut water  (was having one maybe twice a week in the first two weeks). And yet I feel like I am getting bigger.

Anyone else go through this? It's so discouraging. In my first few weeks of Whole30 I felt really good and felt satisfied with the wide variety of healthy foods I was eating. It was actually not hard for me to cut out the unhealthy things like coffee creamer, ice cream, etc. because I was already eating pretty healthy aside from those few vices, but I am definitely feeling sad about cutting out most fruit, nuts, coconut water and not even seeing a benefit from doing so.

I guess I'm just having a little pity party this morning. I'll keep going for the rest of the 30 days because I made a commitment to do it, but I am dreading getting on the scale at the end and seeing a higher number than when I started. I know it's not a weight loss plan and I would be fine if I didn't lose any weight, but to actually gain weight is going to feel pretty devastating to me.

Anyone else experience this around day 17? Any advice? I don't have any health conditions that would contribute to this - I actually saw my doctor a few weeks before starting Whole30 and my cholesterol, blood pressure, thyroid and blood sugar were great. I just need to lose 30 pounds. What the heck is going on here?

It's not unusual to have bloating at some point during your Whole30. It is very unlikely that you're actually gaining fat. The timeline lists this as happening around day 8 ("For the love of Gosling, my pants are tighter!"), but the timeline is really just a general guideline of the kinds of things that can happen -- some people find it's right on target, others find they're a little behind it or a little ahead of it, or some people skip some stages or spend more time in other stages, so it could just be that you've hit that point now.

Hang in there. During my first W30, I was convinced I was gaining weight up until the very last few days, but did end up losing some.

I'd also encourage you to remember that you have listed a couple of NSV's -- no sugar cravings, sleeping better. Maybe sit down and think about if there's any others that you've noticed? Any aches and pains that have lessened, more energy, not necessarily of the Tiger Blood variety, but just maybe more energy to not sit on the couch in the evening, or more energy to do a little more around the house, or just a steadier energy so you don't need an afternoon cup of coffee to keep going.  Or maybe you've had some improvement in your mood, or your skin is clearer -- whatever it is, list those things so you can remember them when you feel discouraged.

Thanks for the reassurance Shannon! I will stick with it because once I've started something I don't quit. I just hope this feeling goes away soon. This morning I was stressing about it so much that I started to think "Okay, maybe I need to cut out that last serving of fruit. Maybe I should stop eating potatoes. Maybe I eat too many sweet vegetables, I should ditch the carrots." And the list of things I thought I should stop eating went on and on until I had convinced myself that by the end of this I will be eating nothing but ground beef and lettuce.

Clearly my relationship with food still has a lot of room for improvement :-)

You might find this article interesting.

You're eating protein, vegetables, healthy fat, and some fruit -- that's always going to be healthy stuff to eat. No, it's not a quick weight loss diet, but then I can tell you from experience that while those quick weight loss diets do result in weight loss at first, they ultimately cause yo-yoing because they're not sustainable. Eating real food is sustainable, but it does require patience and trust, because the results aren't going to happen as fast as we might want them to.

One question - How close are you to your period?

The reason I ask is that 2 or 3 days before my period - I feel hey - I am looking good, my pants are looser etc.  And Bam! out of nowhere the next day the pants that fit me perfectly 2 days before I can no longer button up!

Usually 2 days later my period starts......

Actually it's supposed to arrive Sunday. I thought of that, but my PMS days have always been 7-8 days before my period and then as I get closer to it the bloating and moodiness goes away.

However, I did just get my IUD out earlier this month so it's possible that my cycle is weird this month.

Fingers crossed that's all it is! Would certainly account for why I felt like crying over something as silly as pants :-)

(P.S. my husband has asked me three times this week if I'm pregnant - maybe THAT'S why I am bloated and moody!? Time will tell!)

OK, if you go back and read all of that I think you'll see pretty clearly that Whole30 has nothing to do with your tummy. PMS, IUD recently out, hormones adjusting, and are you TTC maybe too? Deep breaths. One way or another, this too shall pass.
