Lyss
I'm on day 25 of my first Whole30 and I am loving it. I have more energy, sleep better, and I am happier. I have noticed recently that I am becoming bloated towards the end of the day, this is something I had trouble with before the Whole30 as well. I did notice it subsided briefly during the first couple of weeks but now it has returned. I have been taking NOW Foods Super Enzymes in hopes of it helping to reduce that; 2 capsules at each meal but it still seems to happen. Does anyone have any advice, or experience similar tummy trouble. Thanks!
jmcbn
It's difficult to say what the cause might be without knowing what you've eaten. Can you post up a few days worth of food/liquid intake, along with activity/stress/sleep levels to see if anything jumps out?Things that might cause this are drinking seltzer over plain water, drinking iced water, eating too many nuts/nut butters or raw veg, eating too many cruciferous veg like borccoli, cauliflower, onion etc.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted June 25, 2015 Moderators Share Posted June 25, 2015 We used to recommend Now Foods Super Enzymes years ago, but then Now Foods changed their formula to include off-plan ingredients. You need to review the ingredient list on the bottle you are using to make sure they are compliant with the Whole30. I don't think you should restart a Whole30 over this and I doubt the off-plan ingredients (if present) are sufficient to cause your bloating, but you would need to find another brand of enzymes if they are not compliant. Thanks for responding. This is what the last three days of my week four have looked like. Tuesday Breakfast - Scrambled eggs with a side of mixed berries (blackberries and raspberries) Lunch - Leftover Protein Salad with chicken, grapes, red onion, blueberries on romaine with italian vinaigrette (from the Whole30 book) Dinner - Classic Chili Wednesday 5:30am Breakfast - Scrambled eggs with a side of mixed berries (blackberries and raspberries) 12:00 pm Lunch - Leftover Classic Chili with cucumbers 7:30pm Dinner - Grilled Shrimp (from the Whole30 book) with a steamed cauliflower and carrots Thursday Breakfast - Scrambled eggs with a side of mixed berries (blackberries and raspberries) Lunch - Leftover Grilled Shrimp and with a steamed cauliflower and carrots Dinner - Salmon Cakes (from the Whole30 book) with Asparagus Typically I drink between 2-3 litres of water a day, coffee in the morning and sometimes a green tea or Kombucha (I checked the labels and they are all compliant). On occasion I will have a Perrier but that is usually when I get home, which is after the bloating as started. If I need a quick snack I'll usually have a banana or a Larabar. I do 30 minute intervals on the treadmill and light weights approx 3 times a week. My stress levels are normal and I sleep through the night usually going to bed around 10:00-10:30pm and getting up at 5:00-5:30am. Any help is appreciated, although I do see a trend with cruciferous veggies, a lot of the recipes I mentioned above have onions. Hi Tom! Thanks for the response. The label on the Now Foods Super Enzymes lists the following Non-Medicinal Ingredients; Capsule (gelatine, water), Cellulose, Magnesium, Stearate (vegetable source), and Sillica. I also have been taking the following supplements, I only started taking them in the last week. Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega New Roots Ultra Zinc Natural Factors Vitamin D3 Unflavoured Natural Calm (1 teaspoon at morning and night) Any help with supplements would be appreciated. As far as I saw all the ingredients on the labels seemed compliant. Cheers, Lyss
Chachers04
I've been noticing the same bloating issues. I think today, too many nuts is the problem. Otherwise, I just found out about FODMAPS. Trying to see if cutting out hig FODMAP foods will help!
jmcbn
Hi Lyss A couple of things jump out at me although not all of these will contribute to the bloat:Your meal one has no veggies, and negligible fat. And I'd say you are low on veggies in general. Where there any veg with your chill on Tuesday? You should be aiming for 1-3 cups per meal, with 3 probably being optimum. Fruit should not push the veg off your plate as it is doing in meal one, and should not be eaten alone as a snack as you have reported you do on occasion. Larabars are for emergencies only - like you're on the Titanic's maiden voyage, it's hit an iceberg & sinking fast and you're stranded on a raft, floating in the sea for hours before being rescued kind emergency! (I can joke about these kind of things because I hail from the birth place of the Titanic! )How many eggs are you eating? When eggs are your only source of protein you should be eating as many whole eggs as you can hold in one hand, which is 3-4 for most people. As for the bloating the cruciferous veg could definitely be causing it, as could (for me) cucumber. Perrier is another culprit.

Admittedly I probably am not having enough veggies at meal one, this is something I will have to improve but my fiance and I were finding it hard to eat those with our meal. We on occasion would have some sausage or avocado for added fat but have slipped up. All the other meals do include veggies, the chili has peppers, tomatoes and onions. As for eggs we cook a total of 6 so 3 eggs each for meal one and then all our other meals include a large portion of protein; chicken, shrimp or beef for example this week. I will see how I feel today in terms of bloating as we had Salmon Cakes with Aspargus for dinner and I will be having that as leftovers for lunch. The cakes have salmon, sweet potato, scallions and some spices, asparagus was cooked throughly with olive oil and garlic. I should also mention I find that if go for a run on a day where I am bloated I feel better after and I also find drinking some of GT's Kombucha benefical. Thanks for the advice. UPDATE So I had leftover Salmon Cakes (sweet potato, scallions, canned salmon, spices) and cooked asparagus with garlic and olive oil for lunch and I have no bloating. This leads me to believe that I should try and limit or stay away from cruciferous veggies. Thanks for the advice. Lyss
