Day 25: Ate out a "clean lunch" and now suffering

Recommended Posts

I have been having a pretty successful Whole 30 with some positive changes. (I had one restart on Day 2 when someone snuck careenagen in my coconut milk!)  Today I succomed to office peer pressure to eat out for lunch. I was terrified of going off plan but I decided that since I'll be travelling for work 2 weeks out of each of the next 3 months, I am going to need to learn how to eat clean while eating out. I had read several blogs about it and researched the menu before I went. I thought I ordered very clean:

"California burger" which was a burger patty, lettuce, pico de gallo, and guac (hold cheese and bun)

Sub side salad for fries, which was lettuce, tomato, onion, and hard boled egg (hold bacon, cheese, croutons and dressing)

They did not even have oil and vinegar, so I just got some lemons and squeezed the juice on.

I was so proud of myself. My colleagues were downing BLTs, fries, burgers, and deep fried pickles with ranch, and I was very satisfied with my choices and didn't really care.

Now, an hour later, I feel like I am going to wretch. I have made this kind of dinner at home before and no problems. Somewhere, somehow, they must have snuck in something bad for me. Maybe contraband in the hamburger meat (like the 2 NY prison escapees), in the guac or the pico? Good news must be that my body has changed by Day 25, but what should I do about situations like this in the future? PLEASE don't tell me I have to start over. I want to live with clean, wholesome eating, but I am getting so close to the end. I do not even know what is making me react.

Thanks!

Rachel

If it were me, I'd keep going. It seems like you made all the steps you could to get a compliant meal. Sometimes things just happen when you aren't in 100% control of the food. They could've sprayed the grill before cooking the burger, something else could be in the meat mix... it's pretty difficult for you to know unless you call or go back there to ask more questions (I wouldn't).

You might get some different answers, but I really think you did your due-diligence, and if I were you I'd keep on truckin'. I've also got five more days left :)

Thanks for the replies and encouragement. Shortystylee, I'm going to keep going and just make this a lesson learned. I giess I should avoid ordering guac out, which is frankly very sad. I love guac. I'm feeling very irritated that they sneak these things into food without our contol.I am looking forward to the reintoduction so I know what is the right way for me to eat.I'll probably do another round of 30 again in the Fall, after all that travel is over. I know you can travel and do whole 30, but I would rather not add that extra stress when work travel is stressful enough.

Congrats on making it this far, Shortystylee. I know that is mighty fine work. ;)

You could try asking for fresh avocado instead of guac - although I guess some places would buy in their guacamole prepared.

Sadly, guessing at what looks compliant when eating out doesn't work well. Best approach for future:

1. Look up the allergy menu for that restaurant. This menu (not the nutritional info menu) will tell you what you need to know.

2. If you can't find #1, you need to call the restaurant and ask specific questions. You may also need to ask again when you go.

3. Be very specific about what you cannot have, and ask the server to work with the chef to identify dishes that would be easy to make compliant. Be super nice but firm. If the server seems "pretty sure" a dish is compliant, be firm in your insistence that s/he check. Be prepared to order a salad sans dressing.

Remember, you are paying for this meal. The restaurant is in business to make money and you are under no obligation to eat what doesn't suit your needs.. Stand up for your right to eat good food! Until more people insist on quality food options, restaurants will continue to serve cheap, unhealthy stuff.
